Trước đó, tin cho hay một tay súng đã bị giết và ba người khác được đưa đi cấp cứu ở bệnh viện.

Cảnh sát không công khai danh tính của tay súng nhưng các quan chức nói với truyền thông Hoa Kỳ rằng đó là con trai 20 tuổi của một nữ giáo viên tại trường, người cũng thiệt mạng.

Trước đó có tin đưa tay súng chính là thanh niên 24 tuổi Ryan Lanza nhưng các quan chức ẩn danh sau đó nói em trai của anh này, Adam, mới là nghi phạm.

[B]'Thảm kịch kinh khủng'[/B]


Thống đốc Dan Malloy coi đây là "tấn thảm kịch không lời nào tả được" và đã gặp người nhà của các nạn nhân.

Sau đó ông phát biểu tại một họp báo:

"Hiện còn quá sớm để nói về sự hồi phục... Chúng tôi sẽ làm tất cả những gì có thể để vượt qua sự cố này."

Ông là thị trưởng Stanford, gần New York khi xảy ra vụ tấn công 11/9 và nói ông không thể nào tưởng tượng được một tấn thảm kịch kinh khủng tương tự lại có thể xảy ra.

Các phóng viên mô tả Trường Sandy Hook thuộc dạng trường có thành tích tốt và có hơn 600 học sinh từ lớp mẫu giáo tới lớp Bốn, trong độ tuổi từ 5 tới 10.

Cảnh sát tới trường vào ngay sau lúc 09:40 giờ sáng giờ địa phương (14:40 GMT).

Nhiều cảnh sát được điều tới hiện trường để rà soát toàn diện và các trường học trong khu vực đã đóng cửa để phòng ngừa.

Với số tử nạn tăng, người ta cho hay không tìm thấy học sinh trong cả một lớp, theo truyền thông địa phương.

Ba người khác được đưa tới bệnh viện trong 'tình trạng hết sức nguy kịch', Thị trưởng Danbury, ông Mark Boughton nói với CNN.

Đây là vụ bắn giết đẫm máu thứ hai trong lịch sử Hoa Kỳ, sau vụ tấn công tại Trường Virginia Tech giết chết 32 người.

Vụ này là lần tấn công lớn thứ ba tại Hoa Kỳ trong năm nay.

Mười hai người bị giết trong vụ nổ súng tại rạp chiếu bóng khai trương phim Batman ở Denver, Colorado vào tháng Bảy và vào tháng Tám 6 người bị giết tại một ngôi đền ở Wisconsin.

Tại Nhà Trắng, Tổng thống Barack Obama không giấu được sự xúc động và dẫn ra các sự cố này trong lúc kêu gọi có "hành động có ý nghĩa...bất chấp chính trị"

"Hôm nay chúng ta vô cùng đau đớn khi nghĩ tới các bậc cha mẹ, ông bà, anh chị em của những em nhỏ và gia đình của những người lớn thiệt mạng."

Ông Obama cũng gửi lời chia buồn tới gia đình của những trẻ em sống sót và nói "sự ngây thơ của các em đã bị lấy đi quá sớm và không lời nào có thể giảm nhẹ nỗi đau của chúng."

Ông gạt nước mắt khi nói về "sự đau khổ vô bờ" trước những mất mát nhân mạng.

Tổng thống Barack Obama lau nước mắt khi ông đưa ra sự trợ giúp của chính phủ và hỗ trợ tình cảm cho các gia đình có con em thiệt mạng trong vụ bắn giết tại một trường học ở bang Connecticut. Ông Obama nói ông phản ứng trong tư cách một người cha, chứ không phải tổng thống.

Là cha của hai cô con gái, Tổng thống Obama nói “tim của chúng ta tan vỡ hôm nay” và ông nói với các bậc cha mẹ trên toàn nước Mỹ đêm nay hãy ôm thật chặt các con của mình.

“Chúng ta đã trải qua quá nhiều thảm kịch như thế này trong vài năm qua. Và mỗi lần tôi nghe tin, tôi phản ứng không phải trong tư cách là một tổng thống, nhưng là bất cứ người nào khác đều làm như vậy, trong tư cách là cha mẹ.”

Tổng thống Obama ngưng lại vài lần trong bài phát biểu ngắn ngủi của ông và cố giữ dáng vẻ bình thường, khi ông mô tả các nạn nhân, nhiều em trong độ tuổi từ 5 đến 10 tuổi.

“Các cháu còn cả cuộc đời ở phía trước, sinh nhật, tốt nghiệp, cưới hỏi, có con cái.”

Đây ít nhất là lần thứ 10 xảy ra các vụ nổ súng làm nhiều người thiệt mạng tại Hoa Kỳ kể từ khi Tổng thống Obama nhậm chức vào tháng Giêng năm 2009.


Tổng thống Obama nói cần phải làm việc gì để chấm dứt bạo động xảy ra thêm tại những nơi công cộng.

“Những nơi này là những nơi lân cận của chúng ta, và các trẻ em này là con cái của chúng ta. Và chúng ta cần phải đến với nhau và có những hành động hợp lý để ngăn ngừa những thảm kịch như thế này, bất kể xu hướng chính trị.”

Tổng thống Obama không nói về những bước rõ ràng cần phải thực hiện. Truyền thông xã hội tại Hoa Kỳ hôm thứ Sáu đầy những đòi hỏi phải có những luật lệ kiểm soát súng gắt gao hơn.

Để tôn kính những nạn nhân của vụ nổ súng, Tổng thống Obama đã ra lệnh treo cờ rủ tại Tòa Bạch Ốc và Chủ tịch Hạ viện John Broehner cũng làm như thế tại Điện Capitol.

Chủ tịch Hạ viện Boehner đã công bố một tuyên bố viết, kêu gọi người dân Hoa Kỳ “tay nắm tay và đoàn kết với tư cách công dân…đứng lên trên cái xấu không thể nào nói hết được này.”

Theo ABC News, trước khi lên đường cuồng sát ở trường học, tên này đã bắn thẳng vào mặt của mẹ anh ta tại nhà, và bà ta đã chết tại chỗ. Sau đó, anh ta đã mang 2 khẩu súng ngắn bán tự động loại a Glock and a Sig Sauer và 1 khẩu súng trường bán tự động, và áo giáp chống đạn để đi vào trường học.

Vụ cuồng sát này khiến cho toàn thể các trường học trong thành phố đã đóng cửa lại trong ngày hôm nay.

Đây là vụ cuồng sát quy mô vào hàng thứ hai trong lịch sử Hoa Kỳ, chỉ sau vụ cuồng sát ở Virginia Tech vào năm 2007 với 32 người chết.

Vụ cuồng sát hôm nay vượt qua vụ cuồng sát vào năm 1999 tại trường Columbine, mà trong vụ này đã có 13 người chết và 24 người bị thương.

Vụ này chỉ xảy ra sau vụ bắn tại khu shopping ở Oregon chỉ 3 ngày, giết chết hai người trước khi tự sát.

Twenty children died today when a heavily armed man invaded a Newtown, Conn., elementary school and sprayed staff and students with bullets.

The gunman, identified as Adam Lanza, 20, was found dead in the school.

Lt. Paul Vance said 18 children died in the school and two more died later in a hospital. Six adults were also slain, bringing the total to 26.

In addition to the casualties at the school, Lanza's mother Nancy Lanza was killed in her home, federal and state sources told ABC News.

According to sources, Lanza shot his mother in the face, then left his house armed with at least two semi automatic handguns, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, and a semi automatic rifle. He was also wearing a bullet proof vest.

Lanza drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School and continued his rampage, killing 26 people, authorities said. He was found dead at the school. It appears that he died from what is believed to be a self inflicted gunshot wound. The rifle was found in his car.

In the early confusion surrounding the investigation, federal sources initially identified the suspect as Adam's older brother Ryan Lanza, 24. He is being questioned by police.

"Evil visited this community today," Gov. Dan Malloy said at a news conference this evening.

First grade teacher Kaitlin Roig, 29, locked her 14 students in a class bathroom and listened to "tons of shooting" until police came to help.

"It was horrific," Roig said. "I thought we were going to die."

She said that the terrified kids were saying, "I just want Christmas…I don't want to die. I just want to have Christmas."

A tearful President Obama said there's "not a parent in America who doesn't feel the overwhelming grief that I do."

The president had to pause to compose himself after saying these were "beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10." As he continued with his statement, Obama wiped away tears from each eye.

He has ordered flags flown as half staff.


The alert at the school ended when Vance announced, "The shooter is deceased inside the building. The public is not in danger."

The massacre prompted the town of Newtown to lock down all its schools and draw SWAT teams to the school, authorities said today. Authorities initially believed that there were two gunmen and were searching cars around the school, but authorities do not appear to be looking for another gunman.

It is the second worst mass shooting in U.S. history, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 when 32 were killed before the shooter turned the gun on himself. Today's carnage exceeds the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in which 13 died and 24 were injured.

The Newtown shooting comes three days after masked gunman Jacob Roberts opened fire in a busy Oregon mall, killing two before turning the gun on himself.

Today's shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which includes 450 students in grades K-4. The town is located about 12 miles east of Danbury.

State Police received the first 911 call at 9:41 a.m. and immediately began sending emergency units from the western part of the state. Initial 911 calls stated that multiple students were trapped in a classroom, possibly with a gunman, according to a Connecticut State Police source.

Lt. Paul Vance said that on-duty and off-duty officers swarmed to the school and quickly checked "every door, every crack, every crevice" in the building looking for the gunman and evacuating children.

A photo from the scene shows a line of distressed children being led out of the school.

Three patients have been taken to Danbury Hospital, which is also on lockdown, according to the hospital's Facebook page.

"Out of abundance of caution and not because of any direct threat Danbury Hospital is under lockdown," the statement said. "This allows us simply to focus on the important work at hand."

Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district's schools were locked down because of the report of a shooting. "The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff," she said.

State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.

All public and private schools in the town were on lockdown.

"We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims," Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.

State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.

A message on the school district website says that all afternoon kindergarten is cancelled today and there will be no midday bus runs.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including at least 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, a 24-year-old male identified by CNN as Ryan Lanza, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle and two semi-automatic handguns.

Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.

State Police Lt. Paul Vance said there were "several fatalities," but would not confirm the number of victims until relatives had been notified. Several law enforcement agencies are working to determine "exactly what happened,'' Vance said.

The incident - which would be one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history - is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's assault by a lone gunman at a Portland, OR., shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded.

Police later raided a home in the Sandy Hook part of Newtown, owned by Lanza's parents, Nancy and Peter Lanza. There were unconfirmed reports that Nancy Lanza, who worked at Sandy Hook, was killed and that Peter Lanza's body had been found at the couple's home.

A visibly shaken President Obama said he was "heartbroken."

"These were "beautiful little kids between the ages of five and 10 years old,'' Obama said. "They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays. Graduations. Weddings. Kids of their own."

Sandy Hook is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 60 miles northeast of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident.

Fourth-grader Bear Nikitchyuk was heading back to his classroom when he heard someone kicking a door. "I looked behind me and all I saw was smoke and I smelled smoke. I heard shots fired. The second grade teacher grabbed me and pulled me into her room."

The unidentified teacher locked the door and huddled about 20 kids in cubbie closets until police banged on the door. The teacher first balked at letting the police in until she was convinced they were police. The children eventually exited out the school's back door, through playground and walked to a nearby firehouse used as a staging area for fleeing kids and faculty.

Terese Lestik was relieved to find her five year old daughter, Eva, unharmed.

"I heard a boom-boom,'' Eva said of the gunshots she heard earlier.

"I'm horrified,'' said Terese Lestik. "I just pray for whoever is hurt."

Alexis Wasik, a third-grader at the school, said police were checking everybody inside the school before they were escorted to the firehouse. She said she heard shots and saw her former nursery school teacher being taken out of the building on a stretcher, but didn't know if the woman had been shot.

"We had to walk with a partner," said Wasik, 8. One child leaving the school said that there was shattered glass everywhere. A police officer ran into the classroom and told them to run outside and keep going until the reach the firehouse, The Hartford Courant reported.

Counselors and crisis response staff from state mental health services, children and family services, public health and the Red Cross are working with federal and local officials on the scene, Gov. Dan Malloy's office said.

Children are likely to be traumatized, says Dr. Victor Fornari, director of Child/Adolescent Psychiatry at North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, NY. Schools are supposed to be safe, nurturing environment. The shooting shatters that belief. Listening to children and trying to be supportive and reassuring can be helpful, Fornari says.

James Alan Fox of Northeastern University's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice said Friday['s incident seems reminiscent of several from the late 1980s involving shooting rampages at schools.

Fox couldn't speak to the specifics of the Connecticut case, but said, "If someone is interested in punishing society where it's most vulnerable, they know that a school is a place where lots of young, innocent children, our most cherished members of society, are congregated and under their gun -- literally."
