Only 150 of 3500 U.S. Colleges Are Worth the Investment: Former Secretary of Education

The U.S. is home to some of the greatest colleges and universities in the world. But with the student debt load at more than $1 trillion and youth unemployment elevated, when assessing the value of a college education, that’s only one part of the story.

Former Secretary of Education William Bennett, author of Is College Worth It, sat down with The Daily Ticker on the sidelines of the Milken Institute's 2013 Global Conference to talk about whether college is worth it.

“We have about 21 million people in higher education, and about half the people who start four year colleges don’t finish,” Bennett tells The Daily Ticker. “Those who do finish, who graduated in 2011 - half were either unemployed or radically underemployed and in debt.”

That average student loan balance for a 25-year-old is $20,326, according to the Federal Reserve of New York. Student debt is second largest source of U.S. household debt, after only mortgages.

Bennett assessed the “return on investment” for the 3500 colleges and universities in the country. [B]He found that returns were positive for only 150 institutions[/B]. He found college is “worth it” if you get into a top tier university like Stanford, or study an in-demand field like nuclear engineering at even a lower tier school.

The problem, Bennett says, is people going to second-tier schools, majoring in less-marketable liberal arts fields, and taking on debt to do so.

Alternatives to a traditional four-year college include entering the workforce prior to college, joining the military, or going to a 2-year community college.

Bennet discovered, for example, graduates of Jefferson College of Health Science and Nursing in Virginia make more after two years than those from the prestigious University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Also the rise in massive online offerings has lowered costs for taking a course to as little as $150.

As for what could turn around what some have called a student debt “bubble” in this country, Bennett has some ideas. They don’t involve changes to government policy or a massive overhaul of how colleges do business. They may involve tears and parents’ basements. You can watch the interview to find out.

Ông Bennett này nói tầm xàm. Học thì cũng tùy ngành nghề. Nói college không đáng tiền vì anh đi chọn nghề chết đói thì đâu có khác gì nói đem tiền đi đầu tư vào công ty đang thua lỗ trầm trọng? Vậy mà còn kêu con người ta đi nhập lính. Nếu có khả năng thì không nói gì, còn mà sau mấy năm làm lính quèn thì ra đời thường thì không vẫn hoàn không. Dân cựu chiến binh Mỹ thất nghiệp dài dài, phải đi học lại đâu có hơn được người khác?

Trường đại học ở Mỹ nhiều hơn là nhu cầu đi học đại học của dân Mỹ. Một sổ được thành lập nhằm mục đích kinh doanh nhiều hơn là giáo dục , là vì chính sách trợ cấp và cho vay dể dải. Việc này đã gợi lòng tham cho trường học và ngân hàng. Họ cấu kết với nhau để kết nạp học trò vào trường. Thứ nhất để lấy tiền trợ cấp , thư hai tăng học phí cao hơn tiền trợ cấp nhiều lần để buộc học trò phải vay tiền cho đủ mức học phí theo học. Ngân hàng là do nhà trường đề nghị. Nhà trường thì lấy tiền chính phủ còn ngân hàng thì được chính phủ bảo đảm nợ và tiền lời. Ngoài ra nhà trường còn được ngân hàng "kick back" do đã đưa thân chủ tới vay tiền. Vô hình chung sinh viên trở thành con mồi béo bở và là nạn nhân của 1 hệ thống kinh tài tham lam và vô nhân đạo.
Việc trợ cấp giáo dục và bảo đảm nợ học của chính phủ đã làm cho chi phí học đại học càng ngày càng tăng sinh viên khi ra trường thì nợ chồng chất. Có được việc làm thì phần lớn chỉ lo trả nợ , không việc làm thì tiền lời cứ "công bội" lên như mortgage. Nên nhớ nợ này là từ tiền thuể của chính phủ cho nên có khai phá sản cũng không xóa được , nợ này giống như thiếu thuế của chính phủ , nó theo con nợ cho đến chết. Ngoài còn có 1 số học trò cũng lợi dụng kẻ hở "trợ cấp giáo dục" để trục lợi , loại học sinh này chỉ ghi danh để nhận tiền xong rồi không chịu đi học và dùng tiền đó để sinh sống. Nạn này gọi là "Professional students", tức là đi học để nhận tiền để được vay tiền nhưng không có ý định ra trường hay trả nợ lại. Sau này chính phủ phải giới hạn lại chỉ có thể vay tiền hay được trợ cấp trong 7 năm , sau đó thì phải tự lo liệu lấy.
Nói chung học trò nào rơi vào tình trạng này thì dở khóc dở cười !
