You are bidding on an original press photo from 1966 featuring VIET CONG SHACKLE--Capt. Clay N. Mobley of Charlotte, N. C. displays at a news conference in Saigon today a shackle he said was found around the neck of a young Viet Cong chained to his 50-caliber machine gun in the Communist D zone in South Viet Nam. The shackle prevented the boy, about 15 years old, from retreating. He was killed by a grenade. Capt. Mobley is commander of Alpha company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. 1966 . Photo is 8” x 11” in size.

SAIGON ,South Viet Nam (AP): A Teen-age Guerrilla was found shackled at the neck to his machine gun during fighting last week in the Communist D Zone jungle stronghold 35 miles north of Saigon . U.S. Army offices said today.
The shackle prevented the youngster of about 15 from retreating before a company of U.S 173rd Airborne troopers.
The boy helped keep most of the American pinned down during a five-houre battle, said Capt. Clay N. Mobley, of Charlotte, N.C.. who display the shackle at a news conference.
The boy was killed by a grenade.
The Communist have been known to chain their men to their weapons as a disciplinary measure in cases where a soldier has either lost a weapon or retreated . This is the first time U.S. officers have come back with a shackle.

Hey Gerry301... The entire notion that the US would carpet bomb a zero tactical or strategic target like a tinder box ville constructed of dry bamboo and thatched palm fronds is beyond stoopid. You are dead on point with your comment. And remember that there were US teams usually sent to do a BDA after strike on those targets. That's how the G2 that the NVA were chaining their drivers in the trucks so they would not run off was uncovered.

There were individual incidents when the VC and NVA did score, but at the end of EVERY day, US and Allied troops went where ever we wanted to go in SVN.As far as getting our ass kicked:NOPE..! NVA& VC got their asses kicked up to their shoulders.Why else would the NVA have to chain truck drivers inside of their vehicles to keep them from running away?We have pics of the charred bodies chained up inside the cabs. No way could or did the NVA stand up to the US military.

After the Easter Offensive many knocked out T-55 tanks (?) was reported found with charred skeletons chained to the floor. There should be plenty of sources of this.

I also have a vague recollection were a SOG or trail watcher team did a BDA of a truck hunt in Laos where the drivers was found chained to the steering wheels. This might explain the many FAC/Raven and tac air observations of trucks continuing driving like mad when on fire (or fired up on) without any leaving them while others are emptied before first 20m shell slams into them.

There are some other bunker stories around where empty chains have been reported found inside them.

The Vietnam war was a strange war in a strange place in a strange time.

As for WW2, in the early "desperate" Russian front some stories tells of regimental commanders being forced to put chains on the tank hatches so the crew would not try to escape resulting in unneeded heavy crew losses. I also have a vague recollection of similar contraptions being found on NVA PT-76's during the Cambodian incursion.
