The leg of Vietnamese young gunner is tied to his gun

    Link :http://books.google.com/books?id=snj...%20gun&f=false

Book:Beyond the Wall: The Journey Home
    By: Alivia C. Tagliaferri
    Trang 52

    Trích đoạn:

Several Vietcong soldiers clad in black bajama uniforms are hiding the side of the ravine. With their machine guns set to zero they expect the gun to fires waist high, but because of their position atop the ravine; the bullets flying well over the Marines' heads. A Vietcong officer realizes the gaffe immediatly, and barks out oders in Vietnamese as a young gunner frantically tries to maneuver his gun but finds the task to be difficult for the single reason that his leg tied to the gun.

NVA machine gunners who were found chained to their weapons

By: Bud Willis (Cựu phi công trực thăng cuả TQLC Hoa Kỳ tại chiến tranh VN năm 1966-67)
    Chapter ten
    Page : 417

    Trích đoạn:

The POW's hardly looked like prisoners. In fact, they look happy to be there. They're probably treated better than they were in their own units. Some of them were NVA and certainly better off than those machine gunners who were found chained to their weapons...

.. Looking up they saw two men chained to a rock firing a heavy machine gun through a narrow slit. One Vietcong cradled an ammunition belt. Held by the chain, the gunner could lean far to the side and poke his weapon through the slit while perfectly protected by rocks all around. "The chains were tied around the waist and fastened to hooks in the rock. One of the infiltrators crawled forward with an activated grenade and threw it up the chimney - like cavern, killing both machine - gunners. Their bodies were still dangling from the chains next day.

Book: Unlikely Warriors: The Army Security Agency's Secret War In Vietnam

Chapter: NUI COTO AND THE MIKE FORCE ASSAULT ON TUK CHUP – MARCH 1969

..The three young Montagnards had crawled only a short distance when they began to hear the chatter of a specific machine gun. Quietly signaling each other, they moved like shadows among the enormous granite rocks. As the battle roared around them, they soon found themselves behind a single enemy soldier in front of a small cave. The man was on one knee and intently firing an antiquated Chinese machine gun through a narrow crevice. Without a sound, Ha-Elyz slipped behind the man and killed him.

There was a narrow path from the cave extending on up the mountain, so the trio continued their trek. They had acquired an AK-47 rifle and moved quickly, keeping low to avoid being shot by their own men. Staying close to the stone outcroppings, the Montagnards passed several empty sniper positions before coming up behind and slightly below the next manned machine gun nest. As the three small men peered over the edge of a low ledge, they saw two VC in black uniforms chained to the stone wall behind them; they were firing a heavy machine gun. One of the men was cradling an ammunition belt and feeding it into the weapon; held by his safety chain, the gunner was leaning far out to the side and firing his weapon through a crack in the rocks while perfectly protected by solid granite. The chains that secured the men were tied around their waists and fastened to hooks driven into the stone. Quietly pulling the pin from a grenade, He-Non climbed up over the rim of the ledge, moved behind a boulder and tossed the explosive. The bodies were left dangling from their chains as the small team moved on up the trail.

Title:Former pilot for Air America talks about work in Laos during Vietnam War
    By:Si Cantwell Si.Cantwell@StarNews Online.com,
    Page: 2

    Trích đoạn:

The CIA was Air America's main client in Laos. Van Etten flew missions supporting Laotian and Thai fighters fighting North Vietnamese forces in Laos, ferrying supplies to them and picking up their wounded troops. He also flew rescue missions to pick up downed American pilots.

Under a USAID contract with the U.S. State Department, he flew rice and supplies for Laotian residents and refugees. Van Etten said USAID supplied housing materials and even Brahma bulls, which thrived in the Laotian climate.

Van Etten started for $750 a month, but his pay doubled after a 90-day probationary period. He was also quietly paid cash bonuses for more dangerous missions.

The Ho Chi Minh Trail looked like a winding bunch of roads from 7,000 feet up, he said.

"They kept little bulldozers in caves to repair the roads at night" after U.S. bombing missions, he said
. Drivers and gunners were often chained to their vehicles.

"One of my customers liked to set mines on the trail," he recalled.

Evidence the North Vietnamese were indeed hurting came from prisoner interrogations on road watch team reports that on occasion the truck drivers were actually chained to the inside of the vehicle cab to keep them from abandoning their truck in the even of an air attack

Nhận xét đầu tiên về nội dung sách cuả đọc giả pschmehl trong mục Customer Reviews

    Trích đoạn :

The book should have been titled "My Experiences in Hue, Vietnam during the Tet offensive. He says the story of the Viet Cong massacre needs to be told. It would have been nice if he had actually told it. He seems much more interested in portraying the South Vietnamese and Americans in the worst possible light while praising the PAVN for their discipline and concern for the people. It never seems to occur to him that people who execute thousands of human beings might not have as much concern for the people as he thinks they do.

In one section he discusses the PAVN fighters and how dedicated they seem to be. During the aftermath he wandered around Hue and viewed many bodies, including a dead PAVN soldier who was chained to a machinegun. Yet somehow he never makes the connection that being chained to a machinegun just might explain his "dedication".

(Ghi chú : PAVN = People Army of VietNam = Quân Đội Nhân Dân VN = Quân Cộng Sản Bắc Việt)
