Authorities have identified James Holmes as the alleged gunman in the Aurora shootings. (Reuters)

Following this morning's Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, there was a mad dash on the Internet to find out who is James Holmes.

The man in custody for allegedly killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 after opening fire in a movie theater showing the new Batman film has been positively identified as a man named James Holmes, a fairly common name.

A quick search on Facebook turns up dozens of people named James Holmes. Bringing the list down to those who live in the Denver area doesn't help to narrow those numbers by much either.

Business Insider noted one James Holmes took to his Facebook wall to ensure the world he was not the Holmes they were looking for. "I appreciate the fact that you are trying to become better-informed about the occurrences last night in Aurora, but you have been somewhat mislead, in that I am not the man who did it. But I would appreciate if you would read this particular post an not assume that it would be interesting to be friends with someone on Facebook who is very probably going to be in jail and not be able to confirm your friend requests anyway," the wrong Holmes wrote.

It isn't just people surfing the web who are getting the facts on who James Holmes really is wrong. ABC's Brian Ross made the presumptuous leap that a James Holmes who is from Aurora, Colorado, who happens to be an active member of the community's Tea Party was in fact the same James Holmes that allegedly killed 12 people. Ross was wrong. Both he and ABC later apologized for the mistake, the Huffington Post reported.

Another James Holmes was cited on a Right Wing News article that linked to his Facebook page with the headline, “Is This James Holmes’ Facebook Page?” The article's author John Hawkins carefully worded his article just in case it wasn't saying, “...there’s nothing on the page that has dark, crazed, ready-to-snap vibe going on. Were I guessing, I’d say this IS NOT the page, but nothing else on Facebook in the area seems to fit well.”

The real James Holmes was positively identified as a 24-year-old man who, according to a spokeswoman for the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, was a student there until last month, when he withdrew without giving a reason.

A San Diego woman identified herself to ABC News as the mother of James Holmes. She said she had not yet been contacted by authorities and had been unaware of the shootings.

"You have the right person," she said. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado

(Reuters)Authorities have identified James Holmes, 24, as the alleged gunman responsible for killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens during a mass shooting inside a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, early Friday morning.

The theater was packed with people watching the premiere of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises." Aurora police told CNN that the gunman shot 71 people in the movie theater.

The Associated Press is now reporting that Holmes bought a ticket to the midnight showing of the latest Batman movie and entered the theater as part of the crowd.

Authorities took Holmes into custody in a parking lot behind the theater, according to the Washington Post.


The Post states that investigators believe the shooter —armed with a shotgun, rifle and two handguns — was wearing a gas mask and set off a gas canister before opening fire in the theater. The victims of the mass shooting range in age from 3 months to 45 years, reported CNN.

Police said that the apartment of the suspect was booby trapped so they evacuated five of the surrounding buildings, according to the Associated Press. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said bomb technicians were working on disarming some flammable or explosive material.

FBI agents reportedly used a hook and ladder fire truck and a 12-foot pole with a camera at the end to peek into the apartment, and Oates said the pictures were fairly disturbing.

The apartment was around four miles from the theater where the shooting took place.

Holmes was born December 13, 1987, according to CBS News.

President Obama, who earlier expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, said in an address Friday that "such violence, such evil is senseless," CNN reports.

A shooting at a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., early today has left at least 14 people dead and at least 50 people injured, authorities confirmed.

Police now have now apprehended a 24-year-old male and recovered a gun after the shooting at approximately 12:39 a.m. CT at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center in the Denver suburb.

Witnesses said that the man appeared at the front of the theater with a rifle, handgun and gas mask. The man then threw a canister that released some kind of gas, after which a hissing sound ensued, and he then opened fire on the crowd packed into the early-morning screening of the film, according to people in the theater at the time.

"We were maybe 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and all you hear, first you smell smoke, everybody thought it was fireworks or something like that, and then you just see people dropping and the gunshots are constant," witness Christ Jones told ABC's Denver affiliate KMGH. "I heard at least 20 to 30 rounds within that minute or two."

A man who talked to a couple who was inside the theater told ABC News, "They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, and that when she turned around, she said all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people," he said.

"The gunshot continued to go on and on and then after we didn't hear anything," the couple told the man, "we finally got up and there was people bleeding, there was people obviously may have been actually dead or anything, and we just ran up out of there, there was chaos everywhere."
