Ebola Nurse Nina Pham'S Dog Bentley In Quarantine .

    Published on Oct 16, 2014

The dog belongs to the nurse who contracted Ebola from Thomas Eric Duncan while treating him in Dallas Texas.

Laughing, joking and crying for joy: Ebola nurse Nina Pham brings her hazmat-suited doctor to tears as she speaks from hospital

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital released a video on Thursday which shows the bittersweet moment Ebola-patient Nina Pham said goodbye to her doctor before leaving Dallas for further treatment in Maryland.

The 26-year-old nurse contracted Ebola after volunteering to care for U.S 'patient zero' Thomas Eric Duncan, who tragically died last week from the deadly disease.

In the video released Thursday evening, at Ms Pham's request, her treating physician gets emotional as he sees her off on her trip to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.

'Thanks for getting well. Thanks for being part of the volunteer team to take care of our first patient,' Dr Weinstein is heard saying, as he focuses the camera on Ms Pham, reclining in her hospital bed.

'It means a lot. This has been a huge effort by all of you,' he adds, before tearing up.

Ms Pham then smiles before telling her doctor not to cry.

'We're really proud of you,' Dr Weinstein says.

That causes Ms Pham to start crying herself, and another physician standing by in full hazmat suiting hands her a tissue to wipe away her tears.

The camera does not linger on Ms Pham long enough to see where she disposes of the wet tissue after drying her eyes.

'I love you guys,' she says.

'We love you, Nina,' Dr Weinstein responds, at the end of the video.

Ms Pham was discharged from the Dallas hospital Thursday evening to fanfare as her coworkers gathered outside the building to see her off, holding up signs like 'Get well' and 'You're a rock star'.

She landed in Bethesda just before 10:40pm Eastern Time.

She will next be treated at NIH Hospital, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the hospital's Allergy and Infectious Diseases unit told a Congressional committee this afternoon.

This afternoon Ms Pham asked the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital to release a statement on her behalf thanking her family, friends and co-workers for the outpouring of support.

‘I feel very blessed, and have gained strength from their support. I appreciate everything that my coworkers [sic] have done to care for me at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas,’ the nurse stated.

‘I’m doing really well thanks to this team, which is the best in the world. I believe in my talented coworkers. I am #presbyproud!’

The press release from the beleaguered hospital also included a statement from Dr. Gary Weinstein, chief of pulmonology and critical care medicine, who described the decision to transfer Ms Pham to Maryland as a difficult one.

‘We’re so glad she has improved so much in such a short amount of time,’ he said. ‘Our prayers are with her, and she’ll be in wonderful hands at NIH.’

Hospital spokeswoman Candace White concluded the statement by saying that it is in the best interest of everyone involved to ‘give the hospital an opportunity to prepare for whatever comes next.’
Meanwhile, the City of Dallas released new photos of Ms Pham's beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bentley, looking cheerful during quarantine at the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center.
The pooch is currently being cared for by professionals in protective Hazmat suits. City spokeswoman Sana Syed tweeted that Bentley was doing well considering the sudden separation from his owner.
‘Bentley is settling in, getting used to new routines. The cutie played w/ new toy and snuggled w/ vet,’ she wrote Thursday afternoon.
On Wednesday, Presbyterian Hospital was treating two Ebola patients - Ms Pham and nurse Amber Vinson, both employees of the hospital who contracted the disease while treating 'patient zero' Thomas Eric Duncan.
By tonight, the hospital will have zero Ebola patients in its care after federal officials ordered both of them moved to specialized facilities. Ms Vinson was flown out of Dallas to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta Wednesday night.

    Texas, Ohio schools close

Several school districts in Ohio and Texas closed campuses Thursday after reports that some students and staff were on the same plane as Vinson.

School officials sent out a note Thursday stating that four parents of children who attend Garland ISD schools were on the flight with Vinson from Ohio. Those students attend Schrade Middle School and North Garland High School.

“Garland ISD is aware of the reported case of the Ebola patient and is actively working with the Garland Health Department, Dallas County Health Department, and Texas Department of State Health Services,” officials said in the alert. “No Garland ISD student or staff member is being monitored for possible exposure to the virus.”

Two schools in Royce City ISD will be closed Friday to disinfect the school after district officials learned a health care worker with two children helped care for Duncan and Pham. She has been classified as “low risk.”

Jeff Webb, the district’s associate superintendent, said Davis Elementary School and Ruth Cherry Intermediate School will be closed for cleaning. They will not have an early release Thursday, but he said the two schools will not hold after-school activities.

Parents received a letter about the two school closures Thursday afternoon. The school closures will allow the custodial staff to clean the schools, Webb said.

He said the district does not have enough custodial staff to clean schools overnight. “This gives us enough time to do what we need to do correctly,” he said.

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD said in a letter to parents three students from two different families were on the same plane as Vinson.

Two of the students attend Silver Lake Elementary and the other attends Grapevine Middle School, Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan said in a letter to parents.

An employee was on the Oct. 10 flight to Cleveland with Vinson.

“The families have decided to keep their children home from school as a precaution and the employee also remains home from work this week,” the letter said.

Ryan said classes will still be held Friday, but the two schools will be cleaned and disinfected and the school buses that served the campuses will be taken out of service to be cleaned.

Also on Thursday, Lewisville ISD announced in a letter to parents that “two community members related to three students and a staff member” traveled on the Cleveland to Dallas Frontier flight Monday.

The district said they have been in contact with the CDC and do not plan to quarantine anyone or cancel classes.

The letter did not identify which school the students and staff member attend.

Navarro College, a two-year public college in Corsicana, sent rejection letters to applicants earlier this month saying the school “is not accepting international students from countries with confirmed cases of Ebola.” The college is located about 60 miles south of Dallas.

In a statement Thursday, Navarro College said the college is not recruiting or accepting students from affected African countries. The statement said the college is “proud of our robust legacy of attracting and educating international students, including a significant population of Africans,” but called the Ebola epidemic “a fluid, dynamic, unprecedented situation for our country and our school.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely. We are eager to resume accepting student applicants from these countries as soon as possible,” it said. “We’re sorry that some disagree with our decision, but we believe that at this time, this is the right and responsible action to take for the safety of our students and community.”

    Some call for travel ban

Several politicians have called for a ban of travel out of West Africa into the U.S.

Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, pressed the case for a travel ban Thursday during the U.S. House committee hearing.

“Under the pandemic plan adopted in 2005, the president has the authority to enact a travel ban,” Burgess said.

“That authority very clearly exists. The question is why the executive branch doesn’t exercise that authority.”

He added that if the president and administration don’t act, Congress should.

Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas issued a statement Thursday also requesting a travel ban be considered.

“The President should immediately designate an experienced, proven leader to coordinate a national response involving local, state and federal agencies to contain Ebola in the United States, including considering temporary restrictions on travel from impacted West African nations,” Cornyn said in the statement.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed an executive order authorizing the Pentagon to call up reserve and National Guard troops if needed to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The U.S. has already committed to sending 4,000 personnel to West Africa to assist in building treatment units and provide logistic assistance. The troops will not be providing direct health care aid.

A cruise ship which launched from Texas has been barred from entering Belize and Mexico because it may be carrying an Ebola victim.
    ...

The captain of the Carnival vessel made the announcement at around 10am saying that they are being forced to skip the final port on the itinerary and return to Galveston, Texas, Sunday.

‘We greatly regret that this situation, which was completely beyond our control, precluded the ship from making its scheduled visit to Cozumel and the resulting disappointment it has caused our guests,’ the Carnival Cruise line said in a statement to Miami Herald.

However, only ZEBOV caused severe lung pathology in 5–6 weeks old pigs leading to respiratory distress. To further elucidate the mechanisms for lung pathology, microarray analysis of changes in gene expression was performed on lung tissue from ZEBOV-infected pigs.

The REBOV outbreak and experimental infections carried out with ZEBOV have raised concerns that EBOV may be naturally transmitted by aerosol (Jahrling et al, 1990; Johnson et al, 1995). There is also circumstantial evidence that during the EBOV outbreak in DRC in 1995, some patients became infected through aerosol transmission (Roels et al, 1999).

Scientists who study Ebola virus infection focus on developing vaccines or treatments that target the virus. They ignore treatments that don't prevent infection, but instead shore up host defenses and might improve chances of survival. Physicians who study patients with sepsis have shown that acute statin treatment reduces the development of severe sepsis (multi-organ failure) by 83%. Multi-organ failure is what kills people with Ebola virus infection. Inexpensive generic statins are available to doctors in West Africa. They should be introduced as "compassionate care" treatment for Ebola patients and tested as prophylaxis for healthcare workers. The reason for this is obvious; the experimental monoclonal antibodies which appear to work well will not be available for African patients and those .

    ////////////////////////////////////////////

    //////////////////////////////////////

Statins can vary widely in cost—from as little as $53 per month to more than $600. Most people who take a statin must continue to do so for years—perhaps for the rest of their life—so the cost can be an important factor to consider.
