AirAsia victim with life jacket raises questions about plane’s last moments
SURABAYA AND JAKARTA - A body recovered today (Dec 31) from the crashed AirAsia plane was wearing a life jacket, an official with Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said, raising questions about how the disaster unfolded.
Rescuers believe they have found the plane on the ocean floor off Borneo, after sonar detected a large, dark object beneath waters near where debris and bodies were found on the surface.
Ships and planes had been scouring the Java Sea for Flight QZ8501 since Sunday, when it lost contact during bad weather about 40 minutes into its flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.
Seven bodies have been recovered from the sea, some fully clothed, which could indicate the Airbus A320-200 was intact when it hit the water. That would support a theory that it suffered an aerodynamic stall.
The fact that one person put on a life jacket would appear to indicate those on board had at least some time before the aircraft hit the water, or after it hit the water and before it sank.
And yet the pilots did not issue a distress signal. The plane disappeared after it failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather because of heavy air traffic.
“This morning, we recovered a total of four bodies and one of them was wearing a life jacket,” Mr Tatang Zaenudin, an official with the search and rescue agency, told Reuters.
He declined to speculate on what the find might mean.
Mr Hernanto, head of the search and rescue agency in Surabaya, said rescuers believed they had found the plane on the sea bed with a sonar scan in water about 30 to 50 metres deep. The black box flight data and cockpit voice recorder has yet to be found.

"Tôi cảm nhận được nỗi đau mất mát từ thảm kịch này và tất cả chúng ta cùng cầu nguyện cho gia đ́nh các nạn nhân có được sự kiên cường và sức mạnh," ông phát biểu tại Surabaya.
Máy bay từ nhiều nước đă được điều động để rà soát trên biển vào sáng sớm ngày 31/12. Các thợ lặn cũng được triển khai để t́m kiếm các thi thể và hộp đen máy bay.

Tại Indonesia, nỗ lực t́m kiếm chuyến bay 8501 của hăng AirAsia bị rơi ở biển Java tiếp tục gặp trở ngại v́ thời tiết xấu. Theo tường thuật của thông tín viên Ron Corben của đài VOA tại trung tâm tin tức Đông Nam Á ở Bangkok, thảm kịch này làm cho một số người quan tâm về an toàn hàng không trong khu vực giữa lúc ngành này đang phát triển mạnh.

162 hành khách và nhân viên phi hành trên chiếc Airbus A320 đă rời Surabaya hồi sáng chủ nhật trên một chuyến bay thường lệ dài hai giờ đồng hồ để tới Singapore khi máy bay gặp phải một cơn giông lớn. Hầu hết những người trên máy bay xấu số này là người Indonesia.
Từ khi những mảnh vỡ của máy bay được t́m thấy lần đầu hôm thứ ba, nỗ lực t́m kiếm cứu hộ đă gặp nhiều trở ngại v́ thời tiết xấu và những gịng nước chảy mạnh đă đẩy những mảnh vỡ ra xa nơi máy bay bị rơi ở biển Java.
Khoảng 18 chiếc tàu của nhiều nước, kể cả Mỹ, Singapore và Australia, đang giúp đỡ cho Indonesia. Hải quân Singapore đă dùng tàu lặn không người để ḍ t́m dưới đáy biển trong vùng nước tương đối cạn.
Bên cạnh việc thu hồi xác nạn nhân, các nhà điều tra cũng ra sức t́m kiếm các máy ghi dữ liệu phi hành và thu âm buồng lái, thường được gọi là hộp đen.
Đây là thảm kịch đầu tiên của AirAsia, một hăng máy bay giá rẻ hoạt động từ năm 2002 và đang là một hăng hàng đầu trong thị trường này với đội bay hơn 170 chiếc trong khu vực.
Công nghiệp vận chuyển hàng không ở Á châu đă phát triển mạnh trong thập niên qua, đặc biệt từ khi có sự du nhập của các hăng giá rẻ. Hiện có hơn 50 hăng giá rẻ hoạt động trong vùng. * 10 bodies have been recovered so far, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Malaysian navy said that one of the bodies recovered has been identified as Kevin Alexander Soetjipto, a finance student at Australia's Monash University. He was identified through a wallet found on his body.
* 2 bodies retrieved by the Indonesian navy are now at a hospital in Pangkalan Bun. They have been cleansed, placed in coffins and will be flown to Surabaya later today for identification.
* TODAY in Pangkalan Bun: Four bodies at a hospital in pangkalan Bun are now being sent to Iskandar Airport en route to Surabaya.
* TODAY in Pangkalan Bun - BG Arthur Tampi, Chief of Medicine and Health at the Indonesian police confirmed that one of the bodies found was still in her AirAsia uniform, including the name tag. The name on the AirAsia name tag is Khairunnisa.
The 5th body found was that of an adult woman. Her height was 1.64m. She was found wearing jeans, a brown belt, a gold watch and a pair of black shoes.
BG Arthur said that while the bodies found were badly decomposed, they could not be treated with formaldehyde during the journey from the navy ship to the hospital as this could affect DNA analysis.

A Basarnas rescue ship, KN SAR 224, docked at Pangkalan Bun's Kumai port this afternoon after searching the waters 80 to 100 nautical miles from the Kalimantan coast. However, the ship did not find any new bodies today.
Captain Ahmad, who commands the ship, said waves are still high, at 3m to 4m, but visibility is now clear.
