(Kitco News) – Gold’s sharp 4% price tumble on Wednesday is a “healthy” correction for the market which had seen a $200+plus rise in price in 10 days, market watchers said. At 12:30 p.m., December gold futures on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange are trading around $1,780 an ounce.
“We all knew it was coming, it was really a matter of when,” said Phil Streible, senior market strategist at MFGlobal. “In 10 days prices went from $1,700 to $1,900.” On Aug. 5, December gold settled at $1,651.80 and on Tuesday it settled at $1,861.30, after touching an all-time nominal high of $1,917.90.
Market watchers said there was not a specific reason for gold prices to suddenly drop so quickly on Wednesday, but that there were several signs, including a 93% bullish market sentiment reading by Market Vane on Monday. Also this week the biggest gold exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) surpassed the SPDR S&P500 index ETF (SPY) in market capitalization. Even though the GLD surpassed SPY in market cap, total tonnage of gold allocated to the GLD was still under the record set in June 2010.
“Corrections are inevitable. The market moved too far, too fast. It got frenzied,” said Frank Lesh, broker and futures analyst with FuturePath Trading.
Afshin Nabavi, head of trading with MKS Finance, blamed the pullback on sizable liquidation after traders had become heavily long during the recent run-up.
“We haven’t had a correction, other than brief correction, since the $1,500s,” he said. “I don’t see it going down there, but we needed a good correction.”
Streible characterized the selling in gold Wednesday as broad-based. “It’s not just small individuals; larger institutions are also rebalancing. It seems like gold got too be large a position in portfolios for large players, especially after it surpassed the S&P ETF,” he said. Several analysts said it’s possible that gold could fall to the $1,730s area, which is the level where gold began its last leg up. Streible said gold prices could consolidate at the current prices.
Lesh said beyond $1,730, support is around $1,650, but he wasn’t sure if the market would fall that far. How the market closes on Friday will be important for the larger trend.
“If I was a bull, I’d like to see gold hold above $1,730. If it doesn’t, that will be a weekly reversal. That’s a big reversal and it would cause technical chart damage at that point,” he said.
Either way, the analysts said this break in gold won’t have the same severity that the price break in silver experienced this spring when it fell 30%. “This market is very different from silver. Gold is trading as a currency, whether you believe it is money or not…. The reasons that have caused people to put capital into gold have not been solved,” Lesh said.
