The Vietnamese community in Victoria will hold a mass gathering on the Queen’s Birthday public holiday to express their freedom of speech in demanding the Vietnamese Communist regime immediately halt their violations of human rights and unconditionally step down.

The president for the Vietnamese Community in Victoria Mr Bon Nguyen said: “Since the Jasmine Resolution – recent uprisings in countries from North Africa to the Middle East – the Vietnamese Communist regime has taken pre-emptive action whereby political dissidents, religious leaders, bloggers and Vietnamese citizens were brutally apprehended by the Vietnamese police and military forces, with many and physically, mentally abused and killed.”

Mr Nguyen added: “A concerning number of the Vietnamese ethic Hmong people were also reported to be killed.”

Mr Nguyen said: “This mass gathering at Federation Square at 10:30 am on Sunday 12th June 2011 before marching to the Victorian Parliament House will be an opportunity for us to stand firm together in voicing our support for our brothers and sisters in Vietnam. A crowd of over 1000 people is expected for this peaceful protest.”

“The Queen’s Birthday public holiday is an appropriate occasion to raise human rights awareness and to honour this significant event we have arranged for the Australian and Vietnamese Republican flags to lead the rally through Swanston St and Bourke St to the Victorian Parliament House. I have complete confidence that Australians will find it perfectly appropriate to raise human rights awareness on the Queen’s Birthday and will support this cause.”

Finally, Mr Nguyen urged all Australians intending to visit Vietnam soon to be mindful of the current political instability in that country.
