6 killed in Texas roller rink rampage

Six people were killed and four wounded when a man pulled out a gun during his son's birthday party at a Grand Prairie skating rink and opened fire on his estranged wife and other family members, police say.

The shooting took place Saturday evening at the Forum Roller World on the 1900 block of North Great Southwest Parkway.

The gunman, Tan Do, 35, and his estranged wife Trini Do, 29, were hosting a birthday party for one of their two children when they got in an argument and Tan Do began shooting, police said.

His wife was killed along with her two sisters, Lynn Ta, 16, and Michelle Ta, 28; her brother, Hien Ta, 21; and her sister-in-law, Thuy Nguyen, 25.

"The couple had been involved in ongoing marital problems and it is believed that this led to the shooting," according to a police news release issued Sunday morning.

The Do's two children were not hurt and are staying with family members, police said.

Tan Do died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Sen Nguyen, the father of two children who attended the party, said the gathering was to celebrate the 11th birthday of Do's son.

"He (Tan Do) was a friendly guy," said Nguyen. "I don't believe it happened like this. He was a family man."

Nguyen said his 12-year-old daughter called him soon after the shooting.

"She got scared," he said. "She was crying. It's terrible. We just pray for the victims."

The party started at 5:30 p.m. and was set to end at 7:30 p.m., he said. The shooting was reported at about 7:15 p.m., police said.

The names and conditions of the survivors were not released.

Investigators said about 30 people were inside at the time of the shootings. The rink was closed for the private party and not open to the public.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The aunt of a woman killed by her estranged husband during a shooting rampage at a Texas skating rink said the couple argued constantly, often about money, although she and other relatives tried to help keep the peace.

Janice Tran told The Associated Press on Monday that Tan Do, 35, loved her niece and his wife, Trini Do, 29, but he had trouble controlling his temper.

"She loved him. They loved each other," Tran said. But Tan Do had "attitude problems" that were getting worse, she said.

"Lately, we (gave) up because we did not do any good," Tran said.

Tan Do shot his wife and four of her relatives Saturday during a birthday party for their 11-year-old son. He told the children to leave the area before opening fire, but some were still in the building when the shooting started. The private party turned to panic, and witnesses said guests fled, still wearing their roller skates.

Trini Do was killed along with two of her sisters, Lynn Ta, 16, and Michelle Ta, 28; her brother, Hien Ta, 21; and her sister-in-law, Thuy Nguyen, 25. Then, Tan Do fatally shot himself.

Investigators said the couple had ongoing marital problems and may have argued before the shooting. KTVT-TV in Dallas reported that Trini Do obtained a protective order last December against Tan Do but had it withdrawn earlier this year against a prosecutor's advice because she wanted to give him another chance.

Trini Do also sought a divorce in 2008 but withdrew that filing months later.

"He begged for her to come back," Tran said.

Along with their son, the couple had a 3-year-old girl.

In Trini Do's request for a protective order, she said there was a pattern of physical violence and threats. She also said the couple stopped living together in December after what she said had been their worst year together.

In early 2010, Tan Do fired a gun into the ceiling and threatened to shoot his wife because she had been contemplating divorce again, according to the documents.

Tran, who lives in Fort Smith, Ark., said she helped Trini Do, her parents and her siblings emigrate from Vietnam to western Arkansas in 1994.

Michelle Ta, one of Trini Do's sisters, lived in north Texas, while Lynn Ta, Hien Ta and Nguyen lived in Fort Smith, Tran said.

"It's very hard," Tran said. "Every time when I think about Trini and Michelle and Hien, it's hard."
