[I][B]Mặc dù đoàn biểu t́nh đầu tiên này không phải là tự phát của quần chúng, nhưng trong thực tế của những thời gian từ mấy tháng trước đó, quần chúng đă chán ngấy chế độ của Tổng thống Ngô Đ́nh Diệm. Có lẽ đó là lầm lẫn lớn nhất của người dân miền Nam, khiến họ phải chịu thảm cảnh của “Thiên đường Xă hội Chủ nghĩa” sau 30-4-1975.

Tối 1-11-1963, Tổng thống Ngô Đ́nh Diệm và ông Ngô Đ́nh Nhu c̣n ở trong Dinh Gia Long liên lạc với các đơn vị trung thành với ông, trong khi lực lượng đảo chánh vẫn chưa hoàn toàn thắng thế. Một “lực lượng quần chúng” được tập hợp vào buổi tối ngày hôm đó, mà người viết được tham dự như một hạt cát, để thực hiện cuộc biểu t́nh ủng hộ lực lượng “quân nhân cách mạng” trong t́nh h́nh tranh tối tranh sáng, chưa biết phe nào thắng thế. Cuộc biểu t́nh đó không phải “cuộc biểu t́nh tự phát của quần chúng” theo đúng nghĩa của từ này, và cũng không phải do các ông tướng cầm đầu đảo chánh yêu cầu.
Trước ngày ông Nhất Linh tự tử, 7-7-1963, trong gia đ́nh người viết, thế hệ Nhất Linh vẫn c̣n là một thế giới người lớn, mà toàn thể anh chị em trong họ chúng tôi đứng ngoài, chẳng biết ǵ. Ngoại trừ hai anh Nguyễn Tường Hùng, kiến trúc sư, và Duy Lam, sĩ quan quân đội, là hai người cháu liên lạc thân thiết với ông Nhất Linh trên lănh vực văn chương và anh Nguyễn Tường Bá, luật sư, liên lạc chặt chẽ với ông Nhất Linh về chính trị, tất cả các anh chị em khác ở thế hệ tôi trong họ đều không để ư ǵ tới chính trị. Năm 1963, tôi mới có 18 tuổi, đang học đệ nhất trường trung học Hồ Ngọc Cẩn Gia Định, là một trong bốn, năm người nhỏ tuổi nhất trong họ, lại càng lơ là với chính trị hơn nữa: ḿnh là con nít mà! Các cuộc biểu t́nh chống chính phủ của Phật giáo, kể cả vụ Thượng toạ Thích Quảng Đức tự thiêu, cũng không chiếm sự quan tâm của tôi.
Thế nhưng, sau ngày 7-7-1963, ngày ông Nhất Linh tự tử để phản đối chế độ ông Diệm, tôi như cảm thấy cái tảng đá lớn trong đời ḿnh vừa biến mất. Từ đó, ḿnh không c̣n là con nít nữa. Thế hệ trước đă ra đi, giờ đây tôi thấy đột nhiên trưởng thành, trở thành người lớn, và cảm thấy phải đóng góp một cái ǵ đó với xă hội, với tổ quốc. Từ nay ḿnh không chỉ c̣n là một cậu học sinh chỉ biết học hành nữa. Trong đại gia đ́nh Nguyễn Tường, dường như đó cũng là tâm trạng của tất cả anh chị em trong họ.
Việc đầu tiên liên quan tới chính trị chống chính phủ mà tôi tham dự là cùng với các anh chị em trong họ cố gắng làm sao chuyển được bản chúc thư chính trị của ông Nhất Linh tới cơ quan truyền thông quốc tế. Mật vụ của chính quyền cũng đang săn lùng mọi tin tức và tài liệu có nội dung chống chính phủ, v́ thế việc đầu tiên là chúng tôi phải làm sao có được bản copy của bản chúc thư, để lưu hành, và cất giấu bản chính đi. Ba người anh em họ lớn tuổi nhất chủ chốt trong việc này là luật sư Nguyễn Tường Bá, anh Nguyễn Tường Lưu, con ông bác, và anh Nguyễn Tường Ánh con nhà văn Hoàng Đạo, dĩ nhiên phải có Nguyễn Tường Thiết, con trai ông Nhất Linh. Lúc đó máy photocopy chưa phổ biến như bây giờ. Quả thực dường như không ai trong chúng tôi biết trên đời đă có máy photocopy nữa. Chúng tôi kê một cái bàn lớn ở sân sau căn biệt thự của ông bác tôi, số 37 Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm. Căn villa này quá lớn nên sau này đài phát thanh ở bên cạnh sử dụng làm một phần cơ sở của đài. Lúc đó máy ảnh c̣n dùng phim giấy và có lẽ chưa tối tân đủ để những người thợ ảnh tay mơ, như anh em chúng tôi, có thể chụp h́nh được một mảnh giấy, là bản chúc thư. Các anh loay hoay dựng bản chúc thư đứng dựa vào một vật để trên bàn, hướng về phía ánh mặt trời. Máy ảnh để trên bàn cho vững chăi. Các anh cố chụp. Nhưng không thành công. Sau đó tôi theo các anh lên xe hơi chạy đi t́m phóng viên quốc tế, lúc đó là UPI, để trao cho họ. Ngồi trên xe, có cả anh Nguyễn Tường Quí, sinh viên kiến trúc, chúng tôi chú tâm theo dơi phía sau xem có xe mật vụ theo không. Chúng tôi chỉ lo sợ mật vụ tịch thu được bản chúc thư. Ngày hôm đó, chúng tôi không gặp được phóng viên quốc tế. Sau đó các anh trao được bản chúc thư đó cho phóng viên quốc tế vào lúc nào tôi không rơ.
Đám tang ông Nhất Linh vừa xong. Tôi bắt đầu vào cuộc một cách tự phát. Địa điểm biểu t́nh của Phật giáo mà tôi tới “xem cho biết” lần đầu tiên là trước cửa chùa Giác Minh, đường Phan Thanh Giản Sài G̣n, gần góc đường Cao Thắng. Khởi đầu chỉ là “xem cho biết”. Nhưng trong cái không khí đầy kích động đó, tôi thấy ḿnh đă trở thành một thành viên tích cực của phong trào. Chùa Giác Minh là ngôi chùa nhỏ, nằm trong hẻm, của Thượng tọa Thích Tâm Châu. Trước đó mấy năm, khi bà nội tôi c̣n sống, tôi đă có dịp đưa bà nội tôi tới thăm vài lần, v́ bà nội tôi có quen biết khá thân với Thượng toạ. Lúc đó Thượng toạ Tâm Châu c̣n trẻ, kính trọng bà nội tôi như vị sư cụ thuộc thế hệ trước ông. Thượng toạ Tâm Châu hoàn toàn không tạo một ấn tượng trong tôi về h́nh ảnh của một vị lănh tụ của Phật giáo sau này. Nhưng bấy giờ, 1963, ông đang là một trong những trụ cột của phong trào. Giữa Phật giáo và chính quyền, bấy giờ, về mặt nổi, đă có những cam kết hoà giải. Nhưng thực chất, hai bên đều nghi ngờ nhau, nên trên cái loa nhỏ mắc từ trong chùa, vị sư lănh đạo đám đông tuy công khai lớn tiếng yêu cầu đồng bào giải tán (theo thoả thuận với chính quyền), nhưng ngay sau đó lại lên tiếng nho nhỏ xui đồng bào “cứ ở tại chỗ, đừng ra về”. V́ thế đám đông không giải tán. Trong thế giằng co đó, một vị chỉ huy cao cấp của cảnh sát, với dáng đầy quyền uy, ngồi trên chiếc xe hơi bóng loáng, nhỏ gọn có vẻ xe thể thao, tới đám biểu t́nh với mục đích yêu cầu nhà chùa ra lệnh cho đám đông giải tán. Mục đích này đă không những không thành công mà thái độ kênh kiệu của ông c̣n khiến đám đông bất măn. Ông ta là một công chức thiếu khôn ngoan! Xe tới đám đông mà ông ta vẫn cứ chễm trệ trên xe, mặt lạnh lùng, quyền uy. Chỉ có người tài xế xuống xe yêu cầu đồng bào tránh ra cho xe của ông tới chùa. Thái độ của ông ta khiến đám đông bất măn, không những không tránh ra mà c̣n bu lại quanh chiếc xe nhiều hơn và nh́n vào vị “quan” trong xe với thái độ thách thức. Dần dần đám đông ḥ nhau xúm lại toan khiêng chiếc xe lật nghiêng. Chiếc xe quá nặng. Không lật được xe th́ đồng bào nhún chiếc xe hết bên này tới bên kia. Vị “quan” trong xe ngồi lắc lư như một anh “hề” lật đật. Cuối cùng cảnh sát dùng lựu đạn cay bắn vào đám đông. Đám đông chạy lui, nhưng nỗi bực tức gia tăng như lửa trước cơn gió lốc. Guốc dép nằm la liệt trên đường. Chạy tới đường xe lửa th́ đám đông nhặt đá và mọi thứ quay lại ném vào cảnh sát. Cuộc chạm trán giữa lựu đạn cay và gạch đá khốc liệt. Nỗi tức giận của quần chúng gia tăng. Quần chúng hai bên đường trở nên ủng hộ đám biểu t́nh. Họ cung cấp nước để đám biểu t́nh nhúng ướt khăn mùi-xoa phủ mặt chống hơi cay tiếp tục đương đầu với cảnh sát. Khoảng nửa tiếng sau th́ đám biểu t́nh tản mát vào những con hẻm xung quanh và biến mất, trong sự che chở của người dân nơi đây. Một dấu hiệu mặc nhiên cho thấy cảm t́nh của quần chúng đối với phong trào Phật giáo chống chính phủ gia tăng. Đây là trận đụng độ với cảnh sát đầu tiên mà tôi tham gia. Khởi đầu chỉ là đi “xem cho biết”. Đó là tháng Tám. Sau đó dường như tại trường nào cũng có những nhóm sinh viên học sinh tham gia chống chính phủ. Tôi được anh Nguyễn Tường Quí, sinh viên kiến trúc, thường xuyên cung cấp những tin tức về một số những dự định tự thiêu kế tiếp của các vị sư ở Sài G̣n, để tới đó yểm trợ. Nhưng chưa có vụ nào xảy ra như dự định. Các cuộc tập trung của quần chúng sau đó diễn ra tại chùa Xá Lợi đông hơn và thường xuyên hơn. Chùa Xá Lợi là một ngôi chùa lớn, mới xây cất, bên cạnh trường nữ Trung học Gia Long. Một lần anh Tường Quí hẹn tôi tới gặp Thượng toạ Thiện Minh tại chùa này. Một tổ sinh viên học sinh chưa tới chục người được dàn xếp bí mật lên gặp thầy. Chúng tôi mỗi người mỗi ngả, len lỏi giữa đám đông, được dẫn lên trên lầu. Tôi cảm thấy ḿnh “quan trọng”. Cuộc gặp chỉ diễn ra ngắn ngủi trong mấy phút. Thầy Thiện Minh nói ǵ, tôi không c̣n nhớ nhưng không tạo ấn tượng trong tôi. Những ngày sau đó tôi tích cực tham gia mọi cuộc tập trung chống chính phủ tại chùa Xá Lợi, không phải v́ lời hiệu triệu của thầy Thiện Minh, mà v́ trong t́nh h́nh đó, tham gia chống chính phủ, với tôi, là một điều “tự nhiên phải làm”. Các cuộc tập trung này được nhà chùa nói là “tuyệt thực chống chính phủ”. Nhưng thực chất, đối với ai tôi không biết, đối với tôi và những người bạn th́ chúng tôi đều về nhà ăn cơm rồi sau đó lại tới tham gia “tuyệt thực” tiếp. H́nh như đám đông cũng làm như vậy! Nhưng dầu sao đối với truyền thông quốc tế và công luận th́ đó vẫn là những “cuộc tuyệt thực vĩ đại chống chính phủ”.
Một hôm, anh Quí bảo tôi sẵn sàng tập họp để chờ “một biến cố lớn”. Anh không nói là biến cố ǵ. Mà cũng chưa chắc anh đă biết là biến cố ǵ. Hôm đó “biến cố lớn” không xảy ra. Khoảng một tuần sau anh lại hẹn tôi tập họp vào buổi sáng. Sau đó cuộc đảo chánh diễn ra, đó là ngày 1/11. Tôi nghĩ trong t́nh h́nh chưa ngă ngũ, phe đảo chính muốn có một sự ủng hộ công khai của quần chúng. Không biết ư nghĩ này có đúng không. Tôi được đưa tới “trốn” trên lầu một căn nhà gỗ nhỏ trong khu xóm lao động nghèo ở khu vực Tân Định, gọi là xóm Chùa. Chúng tôi phải trốn v́ chế độ ông Diệm vẫn c̣n và cảnh sát vẫn có thể bắt chúng tôi. Đó là nhà của sinh viên kiến trúc Đinh Hữu Tường. Tới nơi, tôi thấy có thêm mấy sinh viên nữa là Nguyễn Tường Cường, em anh Quí; sinh viên kiến trúc Nguyễn Văn Trân, hiện ở Houston, Texas; sinh viên kiến trúc, người Công giáo, Vũ Thế Phiệt, hiện ở Los Angeles, và mấy người nữa tôi quên tên. Chắc chắn mấy người vừa nêu có tham gia một vài hoạt động tôi vừa thuật, nhưng có mặt trên căn gác vào giờ phút đó hay không th́ tôi không nhớ chính xác. Gần nửa đêm một chiếc xe jeep nhà binh tới đón nhóm chúng tôi tới trụ sở Công dân Vụ (h́nh như ở đường Hiền Vương, tôi không nhớ chính xác). Ngoài cổng đă có lính đảo chính canh gác. Trụ sở rộng mênh mông. Trời tối âm u. Tĩnh lặng. Nhưng trong hội trường lớn đă có đông người. Những cán bộ Công dân Vụ được triệu tập. Thái độ họ b́nh lặng, lơ là. Sau đó tôi được yêu cầu một ḿnh lên xe jeep đi mua vải về viết biểu ngữ ủng hộ cách mạng cho cuộc biểu t́nh dự trù vào sáng hôm sau, mùng 2-11, nhằm áp lực thêm lên Tổng thống Ngô Đ́nh Diệm lúc đó c̣n ở trong Dinh Gia Long. Tôi lại cảm thấy ḿnh “quan trọng”, ḿnh đang làm “cách mạng”. Giới nghiêm, không c̣n tiệm nào mở cửa, tôi nhớ tới một anh bạn cùng lớp, có bà mẹ mở tiệm vải tại chợ Tân Định: anh Vũ Thế Đoàn, hiện ở San Jose. Đang giới nghiêm mà thấy xe nhà binh xịch đỗ trước cửa, cả nhà nhốn nháo mở cửa ra coi. Thấy tôi, anh bạn vui vẻ lớn tiếng giới thiệu với gia đ́nh, tôi là cháu ông Nhất Linh. Tôi cho biết mục đích của “cách mạng”. Bà mẹ anh, một bà mẹ Bắc kỳ có giọng sang sảng vui vẻ điển h́nh, hăng hái bảo xe của tôi chở ra chợ để bà lấy vải cho “cách mạng”. Bà biếu, không lấy tiền. Cụ vừa qua đời được vài năm ở San Jose. Cái cảm t́nh của dân chúng đối với phong trào chống chính phủ thể hiện ở hầu khắp mọi nơi, mọi người.
Trở lại trụ sở Công dân Vụ, phía trên hội trường tôi thấy có trung úy Chu Xuân Viên, trung úy Duy Lam, và mấy sĩ quan nữa, tất cả đeo súng colt. Cạnh các anh, một ông lớn tuổi hơn, có thái độ chững chạc, b́nh tĩnh, có vẻ là cấp chỉ huy của cơ quan, dường như đang bị áp lực của mấy anh sĩ quan, bảo các cán bộ Công dân Vụ tuân lệnh cách mạng. Trước khi xe jeep đưa toán sinh viên học sinh chúng tôi tới th́ lực lượng quân sự đảo chánh chiếm cơ quan này rồi. Dường như người điều động “nhóm cách mạng” chiếm cơ quan này là trung uư Chu Xuân Viên, nay là dịch giả Chu Việt, thỉnh thoảng có bài trên talawas và trung uư Nguyễn Kim Tuấn, tức nhà văn Duy Lam. Duy Lam là em họ cô cậu ruột của tôi c̣n Chu Xuân Viên là rể trong gia đ́nh Nguyễn Tường, em rể Duy Lam. Ngoài những người ngoài gia đ́nh tôi không biết tên, tôi c̣n thấy mấy người anh em họ của tôi nữa là Nguyễn Tường Ánh, Nguyễn Tường Lưu, Nguyễn Tường Cường, Nguyễn Tường Quí, và Nguyễn Tường Bá. Trung úy Chu Xuân Viên lúc đó là sĩ quan truyền tin tại Bộ Tổng tham mưu. Duy Lam là trung uư chánh văn pḥng của đại tá Hoàng Xuân Lăm, tư lệnh sư đoàn 23 trên vùng II, cao nguyên miền Trung. Sau này tôi được biết lực lượng quân sự có công đầu với cách mạng là tiểu đoàn truyền tin của đại úy Đỗ Duy Luận, bà con với đại tá Đỗ Mậu, Giám đốc Nha An ninh Quân đội. Tiểu đoàn truyền tin này có nhiệm vụ hết sức quan trọng trong việc lật đổ ông Diệm, v́ là đơn vị đầu tiên đánh chiếm Bộ Tư lệnh Lực lượng Đặc biệt của đại tá Lê Quang Tung, rất mực trung thành với ông Diệm, và chiếm đóng Bộ Tổng tham mưu. Nếu ngay lúc đầu không khống chế được Lực lượng Đặc biệt th́ khó mà làm chủ Bộ Tổng tham mưu, và như thế đảo chính khó mà thành công. Có lẽ trung úy Chu Xuân Viên tích cực tham gia đảo chánh v́ cùng là sĩ quan truyền tin, có quan hệ bạn bè với đại úy Luận. Ngoài ra, v́ là em rể, trung uư Chu Xuân Viên đă báo cho Duy Lam về cuộc đảo chánh để Duy Lam từ vùng II trở về Sài G̣n trước đó mấy ngày cùng tham gia. Nguyễn Tường Ánh, con nhà văn Hoàng Đạo, tham gia đảo chánh có lẽ cũng do mối quan hệ thân thiết với Chu Xuân Viên. Ba người này có quan hệ gia đ́nh qua lại: Anh Viên lấy cô em gái Duy Lam, trong khi Duy Lam và Nguyễn Tường Ánh là hai anh em họ cô cậu ruột lại kết hôn với hai người em gái của anh Viên. Như vậy, Chu Xuân Viên vừa là anh vợ, vừa là em rể của Duy Lam. Ba người này lại trạc tuổi với luật sư Nguyễn Tường Bá, nên có lẽ các âm mưu đảo chánh, mấy người này biết, họ truyền cho nhau và cùng bản thảo với nhau hành động. Nhưng có lẽ ngoại trừ đại úy Đỗ Duy Luận, tiểu đoàn trưởng truyền tin, có quan hệ gia đ́nh với đại tá Đỗ Mậu, là trực tiếp có nhiệm vụ quan trọng trong phe đảo chánh thôi, c̣n các anh Chu Xuân Viên, Duy Lam, Nguyễn Tường Ánh, Nguyễn Tường Bá, tham gia cũng chỉ là ṿng ngoài, v́ nhiệt huyết tuổi trẻ, chứ không có liên hệ ṿng trong thân cận với các ông tướng đảo chánh. Các ông tướng đảo chánh có lẽ cũng chẳng biết mấy thanh niên này là ai. Tôi cùng với các anh em họ khác tham gia đảo chánh ở một vài việc nhỏ bé chỉ v́ trong mối liên hệ gia đ́nh.
Có vải rồi, dù ít, nhưng lại không có sơn. Một ḿnh tôi lại được xe jeep chở lên đường Lê Văn Duyệt gần khám Chí Ḥa mua sơn. Giới nghiêm, tất cả các tiệm đều đóng cửa. Người lính lái xe gơ cửa một tiệm, họ không mở. Người tài xế tức giận đập cửa ầm ầm, họ cũng không mở. Tôi phải bảo anh ta đừng gơ cửa nữa làm chủ tiệm sợ. Tôi gọi to vào trong nhà, giọng có vẻ đầy quan trọng và hănh diện, “Tôi là sinh viên học sinh cách mạng đây. Chúng tôi muốn mua sơn để viết biểu ngữ”. Chủ nhà mở cửa. Ông chủ người Bắc, nghe giọng tôi biết là người Công giáo Hố Nai. Thảo nào ông ta không có vẻ có thiện cảm với “cách mạng chống Tổng thống Diệm”. Tiếp tôi ngoài ông c̣n có cô con gái trạc tuổi tôi, khá xinh. Tôi nh́n cô ta, bị thu hút, nghĩ rằng cô ta cũng chú ư tới tư thế “sinh viên cách mạng của ḿnh”. Sau khi ông Diệm bị lật đổ, tôi trở lại tiệm, kiếm cớ cám ơn để mong gặp lại cô, nhưng ông bố không có cảm t́nh với tôi, “một người cách mạng chống Tổng thống Diệm”. Tôi cũng chẳng thấy cô ta đâu. Đại đa số người “Bắc kỳ Công giáo di cư” đều trung thành với Tổng thống Diệm. Tối đó tôi mua mấy hộp sơn mang về. Xe chạy tới trước cổng, người lính gác chĩa súng thẳng vào xe hô lớn, “Dừng lại”, khiến tôi hết hồn. Vào tới hội trường, thấy t́nh h́nh vải và sơn thiếu quá, anh Viên và anh Duy Lam hỏi những cán bộ Công dân Vụ xem có vải và sơn không. Một ông có vẻ cấp chỉ huy trả lời là kho vải ở đây đắt tiền và quí lắm. Anh Viên (hay anh Duy Lam, tôi không nhớ chính xác) tức giận, với giọng của một sĩ quan, anh lớn tiếng áp đảo, “Vàng cũng phải mang ra đây!”. Người cán bộ nơm nớp nghe lời. Tôi đi theo họ vào kho mang vải và sơn ra. Giữa đêm thanh vắng, bầu không khí lại trở nên yên tĩnh hơn, giữa họ và tôi chẳng nói với nhau một lời nào. Thái độ bất hợp tác. Tổng thống Diệm c̣n ở trong Dinh Gia Long, và những cán bộ Công dân Vụ này, một lực lượng bán quân sự, dưới quyền của Bộ trưởng Ngô Trọng Hiếu, hết sức trung thành với chính phủ, dường như vẫn c̣n hy vọng. Họ không ưa ǵ nhóm đảo chánh. Tôi chợt nghĩ, lần này nếu ông Diệm không đổ mà những cán bộ này nổi lên chống lại chúng tôi th́ nguy to.
Khoảng 6, 7 giờ sáng, chúng tôi “áp giải” những cán bộ c̣n trung thành với chính quyền này đi biểu t́nh chống chính quyền, ủng hộ cách mạng. Đoàn biểu t́nh lúc đầu không có quần chúng tự phát. Chỉ có chúng tôi, một nhóm rất ít người, và tất cả những cán bộ Công dân Vụ hiện diện. Vừa đi tôi vừa thầm buồn cười về đoàn người biểu t́nh. Truyền thông Việt Nam những ngày qua ca ngợi ông Hà Minh Trí, một cựu cán bộ an ninh của Ban Địch t́nh tỉnh ủy Tây Ninh, thuộc Liên tỉnh ủy Miền Đông Nam bộ, người từng ba lần ám sát hụt Tổng thống Việt Nam Cộng ḥa Ngô Đ́nh Diệm, đă qua đời tối ngày 04/05/2020 tại Tây Ninh, thọ 85 tuổi. Tuy nhiên, giới nghiên cứu nói rằng ông Trí đă lợi dụng đạo Cao Đài để làm vỏ bọc cho hoạt động cách mạng của ḿnh.
Các trang báo trong nước cho biết ông Hà Minh Trí, sinh năm 1935, tên thật là Phan Văn Điền, có bí danh là Mười Thương, Đinh Văn Phú, từng đóng vai một thương gia để ám sát Tổng thống Diệm trong sự kiện hội chợ kinh tế Cao Nguyên ở Thị xă Buôn Ma Thuột vào ngày 22/02/1957.

Với chiến công này, dù nhiệm vụ ám sát bất thành, nhưng ông Hà Minh Trí, năm ấy mới 22 tuổi, được báo chí Việt Nam ca ngợi là người đă làm “sụp đổ chế độ Ngô Đ́nh Diệm,” “Anh hùng lực lượng vũ trang nhân dân,” và là nguyên mẫu của nhân vật “trung tâm” trong tập ba mang tên Phát súng trên cao nguyên của phim Ván bài lật ngửa, một bộ phim từng thịnh hành ở Việt Nam trong những năm của thập niên 80.
“Hà Minh Trí đă nhanh chóng rút khẩu súng MAT-49 cưa ṇng, nhắm Ngô Đ́nh Diệm nhả đạn,” trang CAND viết, gọi đây là “một huyền thoại của lực lượng an ninh miền Nam.”
Tuy nhiên, việc ám sát bất thành, sau khi bị bắt và bị giải về Sài G̣n, ông Trí khai rằng ông không phải là cán bộ công an của Ban Địch t́nh, c̣n gọi là Ban Điệp báo, mà chỉ là một tín hữu Cao Đài Tây Ninh, đài ANTV vào tháng 09/2019 cho biết trong một cuộc phỏng vấn với ông Trí.

Khai trước phiên ṭa của Việt Nam Cộng Ḥa (VNCH) vào tháng 02/1962, ông Trí nói: “Ngô Đ́nh Diệm là kẻ ác nhất miền Nam. Kéo về Tây Ninh bao vây định bắt trung tướng Trịnh Minh Thế và đàn áp Cao đài,” trang VOV thuật lại lời ông Trí cho biết. Ông Trí bị tuyên án tử h́nh và đưa ra nhà tù Côn Đảo.
Ông Dương Xuân Lương, một tín hữu Cao Đài hiện ở Dallas, Texas, và là một người nghiên cứu về lịch sử Cao Đài Việt Nam và từng ở thánh địa Cao Đài Tây Ninh, nhận định về việc ông Hà Minh Trí ám sát Tổng thống Diệm:
“Đạo Cao Đài về mặt chủ trương không bao giờ dùng vũ lực để ám sát như vậy. Việc lợi dụng danh nghĩa của đạo để ám sát một người thường khác, đừng nói là một lănh đạo quốc gia là trái hoàn toàn với chủ trương của đạo Cao Đài.

“Cho dù ông Hà Minh Trí là một tín đồ đi nữa, ông có quyền chọn con đường của ông, nhưng chọn cách ám sát th́ không phải là chủ trương của đạo.
“Tôi không nghĩ rằng việc ám sát của ông Hà Minh Trí là phù hợp với đường lối của đạo Cao Đài.”
Trước đó, trong đêm Noel 24/12/1956 tại nhà thờ Đức Bà ở Sài G̣n, ông Hà Minh Trí được tổ chức phân công mang theo súng ngắn cùng với một cán bộ nữa theo ḍng người đi lễ vào trong nhà thờ, quỳ cách gia đ́nh Ngô Đ́nh Diệm chín hàng ghế và chờ ông Diệm tới. Thế nhưng, đêm đó, ông Diệm không xuất hiện. Tổng Thống Ngô Đ́nh Diệm đă bất ngờ đổi ư đi đến khu trù mật Đức Huệ – Long An để dự lễ với giáo dân di cư, nên âm mưu ám sát này không thành.
Hai tháng trước đó, vào ngày 20/10/1956, ông Hà Minh Trí được Trưởng ban Địch t́nh tỉnh Tây Ninh giao nhiệm vụ ám sát Tổng thống Diệm khi nhà lănh đạo VNCH lên Ṭa Thánh Tây Ninh để kư thỏa ước Bính Thân với lănh đại đạo Cao Đài, nhưng do không nắm rơ chi tiết về lịch tŕnh nên việc mưu sát không thực hiện được.
Theo tài liệu của Đảng bộ Miền Đông Nam Bộ, từ tháng 3/1953, Ban Địch t́nh Xứ ủy và Liên Tỉnh ủy miền Đông Nam bộ chủ trương ám sát Ngô Đ́nh Diệm, với lư do rằng nhà lănh đạo VNCH đă “thanh toán lực lượng vũ trang giáo phái” và v́ vậy các cơ sở Đảng đă khéo léo cài đảng viên vào lực lượng giáo phái này để chống trả.
Trang Lao động cho biết ông Trí được tổ chức sắp xếp đưa vào hoạt động trong nội thành Tây Ninh với tư cách là tín đồ thành viên của lực lượng vũ trang Cao Đài ly khai với cái tên là Triệu Thiên Thương và “ông đă hành đạo như một tín đồ ngoan đạo thực thụ.”
“Để không vi phạm chủ trương chung [Hiệp định Gevene 1954], ngay cả kế hoạch táo bạo ám sát Ngô Đ́nh Diệm cũng phải mượn danh giáo phái. Và không ai có thể đảm nhận nhiệm vụ tối quan trọng này tốt hơn người chiến sĩ an ninh cách mạng đang khoác áo lính giáo phái Cao Đài - tín đồ Triệu Thiên Thương,” trang Lao động viết.
Báo Nhân dân th́ viết: “Thường vụ Đặc khu ủy Sài G̣n - Gia Định đánh giá cao đóng góp của Mười Thương, viên đạn trên cao nguyên đă gây hoang mang cho chính quyền Diệm - Nhu, những lời khai của ông gây chia rẽ sâu sắc trong chính quyền Sài G̣n đồng thời bảo vệ vững chắc mạng lưới cơ sở cách mạng ngay trong ḷng địch.”
Ca ngợi phát súng trên cao nguyên của ông Hà Minh Trí, Liên tỉnh ủy Miền Đông Nam bộ viết: “Đây là tiếng súng đầu tiên của nhân dân Tây Ninh và miền Nam biểu thị tinh thần phản kháng và tố cáo chính quyền tay sai ngụy quyền Sài G̣n,” tài liệu của Liên tỉnh ủy Miền Đông Nam bộ viết.

Ông Dương Xuân Lương nêu nhận định:
“Chuyện báo chí Việt Nam ca ngợi ông Hà Minh Trí đó là v́ nhiệm vụ của họ phải làm như vậy. Riêng chúng tôi là những người biết rơ ông Hà Minh Trí và chúng tôi đứng trên lập trường của đạo Cao Đài, chúng tôi nghĩ rằng ông Trí đă lợi dụng đạo Cao Đài, chứ không phải là một tín hữu b́nh thường.
“Ông không phải là người theo đạo chính thức như báo chí Việt Nam nói. Thường th́ báo chí của chế độ toàn trị họ dựng lại những câu chuyện theo sự tô hồng chuốc mực của họ.”
Mặc dù Trí sau đó được tôn vinh như một anh hùng của phong trào cộng sản Việt Nam, nhưng ông không hành động theo mệnh lệnh của các nhà lănh đạo cao cấp ở miền Bắc Việt Nam; mà đúng hơn, là nhiệm vụ này đă được các cán bộ trong miền Nam Việt Nam lên kế hoạch, và như vậy đă vi phạm các chỉ dẫn của Hà Nội.

Trong quyển sách Liên minh sai lầm: Ngô Đ́nh Diệm, Mỹ và số phận Nam Việt Nam, xuất bản bản năm 2013, tiến sĩ Edward Miller viết: “Người ám sát ông Diệm là Hà Minh Trí, một thành viên 22 tuổi của Đảng Lao động Việt Nam – [thống nhất từ Việt Minh và Liên Việt.] Mặc dù Trí sau đó được tôn vinh như một anh hùng của phong trào cộng sản Việt Nam, nhưng ông không hành động theo mệnh lệnh của các nhà lănh đạo cao cấp ở miền Bắc Việt Nam; mà đúng hơn, là nhiệm vụ này đă được các cán bộ trong miền Nam Việt Nam lên kế hoạch, và như vậy đă vi phạm các chỉ dẫn của Hà Nội.”
Trên trang Hồn Việt, tác giả Hướng Vân Thiên thuật lại vụ Tổng thống Diệm bị ám sát 22/02/1957: “Sau cuộc mưu sát ông Diệm ở Ban Mê Thuột, đài phát thanh và báo chí trong nước theo lệnh Phủ Tổng Thống chỉ phát đi bản tin vắn tắt: “Ngô Tổng Thống bị mưu sát, nhưng nhờ ơn trên, Tổng thống đă thoát nạn trở về Thủ đô trong ngày và hung thủ đă bị bắt.”
Tác giả Trúc Giang ở Minnesota viết trên trang Saigon Echo: “Hà Minh Trí là Việt Cộng đội lốt Cao Đài, mà mục đích hành động là ám sát tổng thống Ngô Đ́nh Diệm.”
“Hà Minh Trí và Việt Cộng cường điệu hóa bịa chuyện vô lư để tự hào về kế ly gián của họ, cho rằng: “Kế ly gián của Hà Minh Trí làm đảo điên chính quyền Sài G̣n.”
“Sau cuộc đảo chánh ngày 1/11/1963, Hội đồng Tướng lănh tuyên bố trả tự do cho những tù nhân chính trị quốc gia, đối lập với Tổng thống Diệm, Hà Minh Trí được đưa về Sài G̣n trên cùng một chuyến tàu với những người tham gia đảo chánh hụt, nhưng do lư lịch không rơ ràng, nên Hà Minh Trí bị giam giữ lại để điều tra,” ông Trúc Giang viết thêm.
Măi cho đến ngày 10/3/1965, Quốc trưởng Phan Khắc Sửu, một tín đồ Cao Đài, giáo phẩm Thượng Đầu Sư Cao Đài Tiên Thiên, kư giấy thả Hà Minh Trí. Như vậy, Hà Minh Trí ở tù 8 năm 16 ngày, cũng theo tác giả Trúc Giang.
Truyền thông Việt Nam cho biết, sau khi được trả tự do, ông Hà Minh Trí tiếp tục hoạt động trong Ban An ninh khu Sài G̣n –Gia Định, Ban An ninh Trung ương cục miền Nam, Ban An ninh tỉnh Tây Ninh, Văn pḥng Bộ Nội vụ ở phía Nam, làm Giám đốc Công an tỉnh Tây Ninh, Trưởng ban Tôn giáo Tây Ninh đến khi nghỉ hưu vào năm 1998. Năm 2005, ông được Nhà nước Việt Nam phong tặng danh hiệu “Anh hùng lực lượng vũ trang nhân dân.”
