Bên ngoài, bốn lính thuỷ đánh bộ canh gác toà nhà và bên trong, ba sĩ quan cấp cao của Lục quân luân phiên nhau mỗi người tám giờ canh gác một căn pḥng luôn đóng kín. Bern là một trong những thành phố mà Robert yêu thích nhất. Nó duyên dáng, đầy những tượng đài thật đáng yêu và những ngôi nhà cổ bằng đá tuyệt đẹp được xây dựng từ hồi thế kỷ 18. Nó là thủ đô của Thuỵ Sĩ, là một trong những thành phố phồn vinh nhất của nước nầy, và Robert cứ băn khoăn không biết những chiếc xe điện màu xanh lá cây có liên quan ǵ tới màu sắc của đồng tiền không.
