Quy chế mới này (non-member observer state) cao hơn mức 'quan sát viên thường trực' mà Palestine đã được hưởng và ngang vị thế của Vatican nhưng không bằng tư cách 'quốc gia thành viên'.
'Giấy khai sinh'"Sáu mươi lăm năm trước đây vào ngày này, Đại hội đồng Liên hợp quốc thông qua nghị quyết 181, phân vùng đất của lịch sử Palestine thành hai quốc gia và nó đă trở thành giấy khai sinh của Israel," ông Abbas nói với Đại hội đồng.

Phát biểu sau cuộc biểu quyết, đại sứ Mỹ tại Liên hợp quốc, Susan Rice thúc giục Palestine và Israel nối lại các cuộc đàm phán ḥa b́nh trực tiếp và cảnh báo chống lại các hành động đơn phương.
