Một lát sau, trong nhà có tiếng chân nhẹ đi ra cửa. Bên trong căn nhà c̣n tối mờ. Bóng một người đàn ông thận trọng ḍ từng bước một. Anh ta tiến đến nơi cái sập gỗ. Một xác người đang nằm đắp chiếu ở đó. Anh giở chiếu lên gọi nhỏ:
“Ông nội, ông nội.”
Một người đàn bà nữa đi ra đứng sau lưng người đàn ông. Người đàn ông đưa tay vuốt mắt ông già đang mở trừng trừng, rồi nói với người đàn bà:
“Ông đi rồi.”
Người đàn bà bước lùi một bước rồi ̣a khóc. Nhưng rồi chợt nhớ ra, bà đưa tay tự bịt kín miệng ḿnh lại, hai mắt bà ta cũng mở trừng trừng nh́n người đàn ông, vẻ hốt hoảng mê sảng. Người đàn ông đưa tay lên quệt nước mắt rồi cũng bịt chặt miệng ḿnh lại. Cả hai đi vào căn pḥng nhỏ phía trong. Có tiếng th́ thầm trong bóng tối nhạt mờ, nhiều đầu người nằm ngồi lổm chổm:
“Răng con, ngoài yên chưa?”
“Suỵt. Hỏi dỏ hỏ, không nghe nó vừa gơ cửa đó răng!”
“Con, ôn con ra răng rồi?”
Người đàn ông kéo người đàn bà ngồi xuống:
“Ḿnh ngồi xuống đi, đừng có đứng nữa.”
Người đàn ông cũng ngồi xuống cạnh vợ. Giọng anh ta nghẹn ngào:
“Mạ, ông đi rồi.”
Nhiều tiếng khóc muốn bật ra rồi gượng lại kịp. Tiếng thút thít của người lớn rồi trẻ con tấm tức. Người đàn ông lại đứng dậy:
“Thôi đừng khóc. Họ nghe họ vô chừ. Mạ, mạ đừng có khóc.”
Nhưng nói xong người đàn ông cũng nấc lên một tiếng nhỏ. Anh ta đi ra ngoài nhà, anh ḍm qua khe cửa. Một tốp đàn ông đàn bà đang đi vào trong sân. Anh ta nhè nhẹ trở vô. Căn nhà hoàn toàn im lặng.
Tiếng gơ cửa nổi lên ban đầu c̣n thưa, rồi trở nên cấp bách. Có giọng đàn ông người miệt ngoài cất lên:
“Mở cửa, mở cửa, quân giải phóng đến.”
Bên trong căn pḥng nhỏ, người đàn bà cầm chặt lấy tay người đàn ông. Bàn tay của người mẹ bịt chặt miệng đứa cháu, sợ nó la khóc. Tiếng đập cửa bên ngoài mạnh hơn:
“Mở cửa. Mở cửa không chúng tôi bắn.”
Có tiếng người đàn ông trẻ tuổi:
“Hồi năy tôi gơ măi mà không có ai. Chắc họ chạy hết rồi.”
“Vô lư, đêm mà chạy đi đâu. Chưa ai chạy khỏi nhà hết.”
Rồi một giọng khác dơng dạc:
“Tôi đếm từ một tới ba mà không mở cửa là tôi bắn. Có ai trong nhà không? Một…”
Người đàn bà xô người đàn ông ra cửa, chị lẩy bẩy thế nào mà gây một tiếng động nhỏ. Bên ngoài có tiếng cười gằn rồi tiếng hô tiếp:
“Hai.”
Người đàn ông đă ra tới cửa, anh giơ hai tay lên khỏi đầu:
“Dạ lạy các ông, lạy các ông tui mở, dạ để tui mở…”
“À, biết ngay mà. Mở cửa.”
Người đàn ông lẩy bẩy một lúc mới mở được cánh cửa. Toán người ùa vào nhà. Họ có khoảng chừng mười người, kẻ vác súng trường người xách bị rết. Người đàn ông lớn tuổi nhất, có đôi mắt thật to nhưng vẻ mặt xanh xao, nh́n một lượt khắp nhà:
“Các đồng chí canh gác cửa ngơ.”
Vài người đi vào các phía cửa sổ. Người đàn ông chủ nhà mặt tái xanh tay chân run cầm cập nói không ra tiếng:
“Lạy các ông chúng tôi là người lương thiện.”
“Hừ, tại sao gọi cửa hoài không mở hả. Mở đường cho ngụy chạy phải không?”
“Lạy các ông, con sợ quá.”
“Không có các ông nào ở đây hết. Chúng tôi là quân giải phóng.”
“Dạ.”
“Có bao nhiêu người trong nhà gọi ra hết đi. Mau.”
Rồi ông quay đi:
“Các đồng chí. Mở cửa sổ ra.”
Ánh sáng lùa vào căn pḥng, soi rơ khuôn mặt của ông già nằm trên sập gụ. Chiếc chiếu đă được mở ra từ trước, tấm chăn đắp trên người ông loang đầy máu, đă sệt khô. Người đàn ông lớn tuổi bước tới một bước nh́n vào mặt người chết, rồi la ồ lên một tiếng:
“Ông chết rồi hả!”
“Dạ.”
“Bị tự bao giờ?”
“Dạ thưa ông… ông giải phóng, dạ bị tự lúc một giờ sáng, máu ra nhiều quá.”
“Các đồng chí cho đem xác ra ngoài vườn giùm đi.”
Mấy người đàn ông định xúm tới. Người đàn bà run lập cập:
“Lạy các ông, dạ lạy các ông giải phóng, dạ để chúng con xin được chôn cất.”
“Để đó.”
Mấy người đang đi đến tấm sập gụ dừng lại. Người đàn ông lừ mắt vào pḥng trong:
“Gọi hết cả nhà ra đây. Đi ra hết. Ai c̣n ở trong chúng tôi bắn.”
Mấy đứa trẻ con ra trước rồi một người đàn bà đứng tuổi, mấy cô con gái, một chị đàn bà bế đứa con nhỏ. Mặt người nào người đó tái xanh. Người đàn ông lớn tuổi nạt:
“Đứng cả vào một góc nhà.”
Cả nhà líu ríu đứng về phía sập gụ, bên cạnh xác chết của ông già. Có tiếng động nhỏ phía trong. Người đàn ông lớn tuổi lắng tai nghe. Một nữ cán bộ dợm tới một bước, chĩa súng vào căn pḥng nhỏ:
“Ai trong đó xin mời ra.”
Bên trong vẫn im như tờ. Nhưng người đàn ông lớn tuổi đă lừ mắt ra hiệu.
Hai ba người khác bước tới. Cánh cửa phía bên buồng trong bỗng bật mở sáng. Một bóng người lao ra ngoài. Một tiếng chóc khô, lạnh, vang lên. Có tiếng kêu ở bên ngoài cửa sổ và tiếng rú của mấy người đàn bà. Người đàn ông đứng tuổi lại cười gằn:
“Coi lục soát kỹ nhà này.”
“Tuân lệnh.”
Mọi người chia nhau đi lục soát, người đàn bà già và thiếu phụ bồng con ôm mặt khóc nức nở. Mấy cô gái mặt tái xanh, cắt không c̣n hột máu. Người đàn ông ôm chặt một đứa nhỏ đang đu lên người ông. Đám người lục soát một hồi trở ra, một người nói:
“Không có ǵ nữa cả.”
Người đàn ông đứng tuổi hất hàm:
“Ra coi tên đó chết chưa!”
“Dạ, đă xem, chết rồi.”
Nhiều tiếng khóc cùng bật lên một lúc. Mấy cô nữ cán bộ xúm lại, vẻ hung hăng lúc đầu biến mất. Một cô làm thân với thiếu phụ:
“Chị đừng buồn, đừng sợ. Chúng tôi chỉ xử những người có tội, c̣n những người dân th́ chúng tôi có bổn phận phải bảo vệ.”
Thiếu phụ chùi nước mắt:
“Nó là em tui mà. Nó có tội t́nh chi mô.”
“Tại anh ấy bỏ chạy. Trong hoàn cảnh chúng tôi, chúng tôi phải tự vệ.”
Người đàn ông đứng tuổi nh́n một lượt những khuôn mặt đang run rẩy, tái xanh. Giọng hắn chầm chậm, đều đều:
“Mẹ và chị đừng sợ. Chúng tôi đến đây là để giải phóng cho đồng bào…”
Người thiếu phụ đang khóc bỗng nín bặt, ngơ ngác. Mấy đứa con gái nép sát vào nhau. Có tiếng chân người chạy từ ngoài cổng vào. Hai giải phóng quân khác đi vào. Họ có quàng khăn xanh ở cổ, người đàn ông đứng tuổi hỏi:
“Có chuyện ǵ vậy?”
Một người nói nho nhỏ vào tai người đàn ông lớn tuổi. Hắn gật gật đầu, quay lại nói với các nữ cán bộ và mấy người giải phóng:
“Các đồng chí ở lại đây. C̣n tôi với đồng chí Thu đi lên xóm Chùa.”
Tiếng chân đi ra cổng. Một nữ cán bộ giơ tay:
“Các đồng chí, chúng ta ở lại đây, sửa soạn cơm nước rồi phụ bạn tải thương, tiếp vận.”
“Đồng chí Xuân nói phải. Lát nữa chắc có tiếp vận tới.”
Người nữ cán bộ mang tên Xuân mỉm cười, vỗ vai thiếu phụ thân mật nói:
“Bây giờ để tôi nhờ các đồng chí phụ với ông nhà lo chôn hai xác chết. Thưa chị, đây là…”
Xuân chỉ vào xác chết ông già. Người mẹ vội vă trả lời thay con dâu:
“Dạ thưa cô, đây là ông nội của tụi nó.”
Người nữ cán bộ xua tay:
“Chết, mẹ giải phóng, con xin mẹ đừng gọi con là cô. Con xin được làm con mẹ như các chị các anh ở đây.”
Cô nói xong quay lại đồng bạn:
“Bây giờ nhờ đồng chí Tiến, đồng chí B́nh lo chôn giùm hai xác người, cụ và anh đang ở ngoài vườn.”
Rồi đổi khuôn mặt buồn rầu, người nữ cán bộ tên Xuân quay lại phía gia chủ:
“Thật đáng tiếc, trường hợp ngoài ư muốn, xin chia buồn với mẹ và các anh các chị.”
Người đàn ông quay mặt đi giấu hai giọt lệ đang lăn xuống. Xác chết của ông già và người thanh niên được bó trong hai chiếc chiếu rồi đem vùi nông ở góc vườn. Một lát sau, mấy cô nữ cán bộ làm thân với mấy cô gái, các người lính giải phóng th́ chia nhau gác góc vườn và lo đi liên lạc, Xuân nói với người đàn bà già:
“Thưa mẹ, nhà ta c̣n gạo không?”
Bà già thật thà:
“Gạo c̣n hai bao. Tết mà cô. C̣n cả bánh tét và mứt nữa cô.”
“Ấy, xin mẹ đừng gọi con bằng cô nữa. Mẹ gọi con là con như gọi các anh các chị đây.”
Cô lại cười, nói tiếp:
“Có lẽ vài ba bữa nữa bộ đội mới tiếp lương thực tới. Mẹ cho chúng con vay hai tạ gạo. Vài ba hôm lấy xong thành phố Huế, Bác Hồ vào thăm, con sẽ thưa trường hợp của mẹ. Bây giờ xin mẹ kư vào cuốn sổ vàng của Bác Hồ.”
Cô quay lại gọi:
“Đồng chí Nữ đâu, đem sổ ra đây.”
Người nữ cán bộ tên Nữ là một cô gái mập mạp, nhưng nước da vẫn tái xanh, cô ta nhanh nhẩu rút trong áo ra một cuốn tập, ch́a tới bên bà già:
“Thưa mẹ đây, xin mẹ kư.”
Người đàn bà già run run:
“Dạ tui có biết chữ chi mô mà kư.”
Cô gái lại cười, hỏi mấy cô gái Huế đang đứng dồn với nhau một góc.
“Thôi các chị biên tên rồi kư giùm. À mà để tôi biên tên cho cũng được…”
“Dạ thưa mẹ, mẹ tên chi. Dạ xong rồi. Xin chị kư.”
Cô gái nhỏ run run viết một chữ kư nguệch ngoạc lên trang giấy. Nữ đưa cuốn sổ cho Xuân. Người đàn bà lặng lẽ chùi nước mắt. Mấy cô gái vẫn đứng dồn một góc, nắm chặt tay nhau, trong lúc cô nữ cán bộ tên Xuân cười:
“Trưa nay chúng ta ăn mừng chiến thắng.”
Những mảnh mặt trời vỡ vụn đang dần dần tụ lại, vẫn dật dờ lẩn khuất bên trên bầu trời đầy mây mù và gió lạnh.
Những đốm máu cùng xương vương trên cỏ đă khô để lại những vết tím bầm. Trong những khu vườn nhiều dấu đất mới. Tất cả những người bị thương đều được khiêng lên một ngôi chùa và các nữ cứu thương đang trổ tài băng bó. Vẻ vui tươi buổi sáng biến mất trên khuôn mặt họ; những đồng chí giải phóng đi đi lại lại , gác các đầu đường hoặc chia nhau tràn vào các nhà dân.

Nơi ngă ba, trong một quán nhỏ bỏ trống, mấy người đàn ông bị thương nhẹ đang ngồi rờ rịt vết thương. Anh lính trẻ tên Thu đang bồng súng đứng gác ở góc đường. Cạnh đám cỏ anh ngồi, một vũng máu của ai đă khô, mấy con ruồi xanh bay vật vờ, thỉnh thoảng vài con chờn vờn trước mũi anh, muốn bám vào mặt anh, anh đưa tay xua với dáng điệu hết sức lơ đăng.
Một vài nhà, cửa mở toang, người ta thấy các anh giải phóng, các cô cán bộ đi vào. Thỉnh thoảng có một vài đứa nhỏ chạy ra sân, tức th́ có một người lớn chạy ra bế bổng đứa bé lên hốt hoảng chạy vào nhà, mất hút. Không khí hoàn toàn yên tĩnh.
Vừa mới đêm qua, tiếng súng xé màn trời, rung đổ nhà cửa, bây giờ tất cả sự ồn ào đó , đă lẩn mất cùng bóng đêm, để lại một mặt trời vỡ với những kinh hoàng c̣n bám chặt trên mặt đất đầy máu, trên những cành cây găy đổ, trên những ngọn lá xanh rụng đầy vườn.
[b]Tất cả mọi nhà, mọi người đều ngồi chụm vào một đám. Họ e dè nh́n những anh lính miền Bắc mà họ được phép gọi là quân giải phóng, đi lui đi tới, nét mặt đôi khi phấn khởi đôi khi nghiêm nghị bí ẩn. Họ không dám trả lời một câu hỏi nào của đám người lạ mặt. [/b]
Dân trong xóm cũng ngạc nhiên không ít khi thấy vài người láng giềng mới hôm qua c̣n chúc tết nhau, sáng nay đă thấy họ cầm súng trong tay, cũng quấn khăn xanh khăn đỏ nơi cổ và nh́n họ bằng ánh mắt đe dọa, kiêu ngạo. Những người này công khai đi thăm hàng xóm. Một ông thợ ḷ rèn mới tối qua say rượu lè nhè chửi nhau với mấy cô gánh nước ngoài giếng, nay cũng xách súng đi thăm từng nhà. Gặp ai anh cũng nở nụ cười thật tươi, huênh hoang nói:
“Đồng bào yên chí đi, bà con yên chí đi. Vài ba hôm nữa cụ Hồ vô, tha hồ mà liên hoan.”
“Bác không biết đó chớ. Tui theo quân giải phóng lâu rồi. Tui nằm vùng mà.”
Mọi người nh́n anh ta với khuôn mặt xanh lè. Ai cũng sợ, thường ngày anh chỉ là thợ rèn hiền lành, chiều chiều say rượu hay nói bậy, gây gổ với trẻ con, với các cô ở ... đi gánh nước. Nhưng biết đâu anh không chuốc oán mua hờn với nhiều người trong xóm. Mấy đứa con trai con của một bà bán thịt heo ở chợ cũng nô nức xách súng theo giải phóng.
[b]Một ông già ăn mày thường ngày ngồi trước mấy quán nước, hôm nay mặt mày cũng rạng rỡ hẳn, ông ta đi khắp các nhà tuyên truyền ầm ĩ:
“Quân giải phóng tới rồi nghe, rồi đây ḿnh sướng lắm. Tui nói thiệt chớ ai làm cái chi ở đây mà tui không biết.”
Câu nói như một lời đe dọa, người ta đưa mắt nh́n nhau, vẻ lo lắng buồn rầu không thể nào che dấu được nữa. [/b]
Đến khoảng trưa th́ quân giải phóng đến thúc mọi người ra hết ngoài sân. Họ kêu gọi những thanh niên đi tải đạn, những thanh nữ đi tải thương. Mười lăm tuổi trở lên là phải đi hết, chỉ các bà mẹ mà họ gọi là mẹ giải phóng, các sản phụ, các bà mang thai mà họ gọi là chị giải phóng, th́ ở nhà giúp đỡ các anh giải phóng cơm nước.
Một số người bị thương chịu không nổi đau đớn đă trút hơi thở. Nhưng quân giải phóng không đem chôn trong vườn nữa, họ chở đi theo với đoàn bị thương lên miệt trên. Đó là những con đường dẫn lên Tây Thiên, lên ḍng Thiên An, lên các lăng tẩm. Giữa trưa, những ngôi nhà buồn tẻ im lặng cũng có hơi khói, dấu hiệu của buổi cơm.
Nhiều tiếng khóc bật lên thảm thiết. Trong nhiều ngôi nhà cũng có nhiều người dân chết v́ vết thương không đủ thuốc thang băng bó. Người lính trẻ tuổi đang gác ở ngă ba lắng tai nghe rồi châm một điếu thuốc hút. Mấy người trong quán hỏi vọng ra:
“Ai khóc ở đâu vậy?”
“Trong mấy nhà kia ḱa.”
“Chắc có người chết!”
“Dân mà, quân ḿnh chở đi hết rồi.”
Anh ta lại nh́n vào một ngôi nhà nằm khuất trong một vườn cây, hỏi:
“Biết đây là ǵ không?”
“Nhà thờ cụ Phan đó.”
“Một vị anh hùng, một người cách mạng hả?”
“Ừ.”
Người trong quán hỏi tiếp:
“Lấy xong mấy đồn chưa?”
“Chưa có tin ǵ hết.”
Người lính trẻ lại im lặng. Tiếng khóc trong nhiều căn nhà nổi lên, anh ta châm một điếu thuốc nữa rồi cau mày. Anh ngập ngừng rồi mạnh dạn đi vào một nhà gần nhất.
Đó là một ngôi nhà tranh nằm ngay mặt đường gần ngă ba nơi anh lính đứng gác. Anh ghé cửa nh́n vào, bên trong ngôi nhà, giữa bộ ván gỗ, một xác chết nằm ngửa, cả một gia đ́nh bu quanh kêu khóc. Một bà già, một người đàn bà bế đứa con và hai đứa trẻ đang xúm quanh xác chết: Con ơi là con ơi, anh ơi là anh ơi. Ba ơi là ba, ba ơi. Tiếng người mẹ, người vợ, tiếng những đứa con thơ làm năo ruột người nghe. Anh lính Bắc Việt tần ngần đưa tay đập nhẹ cửa.
Cánh cửa không đóng, anh chỉ mới đưa tay gơ đă tự động đẩy ra. Luôn đà anh đi thẳng vào nhà. Hai người đàn bà hốt hoảng nh́n ra, mấy đứa trẻ con nín khóc. Anh đi tới gần nh́n xác chết, không phải một mà là hai xác chết. Phía trong xác của người đàn ông c̣n xác một đứa trẻ khoảng lên ba, mặt mày tím bầm và c̣n dính đầy máu. Người đàn bà già chen tới trước mặt anh như che chở cho mấy xác chết, đôi mắt bà nh́n người lính giải phóng với vẻ van nài cầu khẩn:
“Ông ơi, chết hết rồi, không c̣n ai nữa mà bắt đi.”
Bà chỉ vào người đàn bà đang bế đứa nhỏ:
“Con nó một nách ba đứa con dại, ông tha cho mẹ con tui…”
Người đàn bà già nói xong bật khóc, cô con dâu và mấy đứa nhỏ lại khóc theo. Người lính nh́n quanh gian nhà, đồ đạc thật nghèo nàn, ở giữa nhà kê bộ ngựa gơ, bên chái trên là bộ bàn ghế, đằng sau bộ bàn ghế là một bàn thờ nhỏ, phía bên trái kê chiếc giường tre. Trên bàn thờ c̣n nguyên mấy đ̣n bánh tét, mấy đĩa mứt bánh. Trên chiếc bàn gỗ phủ mảnh vải ny lông hoa ḥe , c̣n chiếc b́nh bông cắm một cành mai vàng. Mấy cái tách, mấy cái ly úp trên một cái khay bằng nhôm. Anh dịu giọng hỏi bà già:
“Nhà này của mẹ?”
“Dạ, c̣n đây là con cháu tui.”
Bà chỉ cả người chết lẫn người sống. Người lính Bắc Việt mở cái khăn quàng cổ của ḿnh đắp lên mặt người đàn ông, rồi rút khăn mùi xoa lau bớt máu dính đặc trên mặt đứa bé. Anh kéo cái chăn đắp kín mặt mày thằng nhỏ. Vừa lúc đó có tiếng động dưới bếp, tiếng đập cửa rồi một khuôn mặt đàn bà đầu rối bù ló lên:
“Bà Bổng ơi, có chút dầu mô cho tui một chút. Có chút thuốc đỏ cho tui một chút. Nó sắp chết rồi bà Bổng ơi.”
Người đàn bà lật đật đi lên nhà, thấy hai xác chết nằm sơng sượt trên ván gỗ, bà ta lùi lại:
“Ối trời ơi, mần răng ri ń. Mần răng ri ń trời.”
Bà đưa mắt nh́n khắp mặt mọi người, đến khi chạm phải anh lính giải phóng. Bà đưa tay lên miệng, khuôn mặt đă tái xanh bây giờ xám ngoét.
Bà già xô vai chị đàn bà:
“Chị Trùm đi về đi. Đừng có chạy qua chạy lại nữa.”
Người đàn bà tên Trùm run lẩy bẩy:
“Bà Bổng làm ơn làm phước cho tui xin chút thuốc rịt vết thương cho con Bê, máu ra nhiều quá, nó xỉu rồi.”
“Con Bê há? Nó bị thương?”
“Nó bị thương hồi gần sáng. Trời đất quỷ thần ôi, khổ cho gia đ́nh tui, hồi trước tới chừ ăn ở có răng mô mà trời bắt tan tành như ri rứa trời.”
Rồi nh́n hai xác chết, bà gượng lại:
“Trời đất hỡi, c̣n thằng Tanh với thằng cu em răng mà ra thân thể ri ń trời!”
Nghe tiếng than của người hàng xóm, người vợ bật khóc nấc lên, bà già bế lấy đứa cháu trên tay con dâu, cũng mếu máo:
“Thôi con ơi, đi ra mà nấu chén cơm, đặt bát nhang lên cho tụi nó, răng mà khổ ri trời, nhang tàn khói lạnh…”
“Ai bắn ai giết nó đó?”
“Biết mô mà lần, chị Trùm ơi, chỉ biết là con ḿnh, cháu ḿnh chết.”
Chị Trùm nh́n người lính giải phóng và chợt nhớ là ḿnh vừa nói một câu hớ có thể nguy hiểm, chị nín thinh. Nhưng người lính vẫn lơ đăng nh́n về phía bàn thờ. Những chân nhang đă tàn, hai ngọn nến cháy gần lụi được thổi tắt từ lúc nào. Một lát, thấy người đàn bà lật đật đi xuống bếp, anh nói theo:
“Có ai bị thương đem qua bên chùa, quân cứu thương băng bó cho.”
“Có, tui đă đem qua rồi, họ nói thuốc chưa đủ cho quân giải phóng.”
Chị đàn bà đă khuất sau bếp. Tiếng chân đi ṿng ra phía hẻm… Người lính giải phóng nh́n xác chết một lần nữa rồi nói với bà già:
“Thôi mẹ, mẹ đừng khóc nữa, phải có người hy sinh cho chúng ta chiến thắng.”
Người đàn bà già không hiểu. Người vợ đưa tay quệt nước mắt:
