Chiếc phi thuyền mẹ khổng lồ lặng lẽ treo lơ lửng trong khoảng không gian vũ trụ tối sẫm, dường như bất động, đang di chuyển với tốc độ hai mươi hai ngh́n dặm một giờ, đồng bộ một cách chính xác với quỹ đạo của trái đất. Những sinh vật lạ nầy ch́m xuống những đại dương, đă có thời hoang sơ và trong xanh, giờ đây đen ng̣m v́ dầu và nâu vàng v́ những chất cặn bă. Mầu hồng rực của vùng Vách Chắn lớn đang ngả sang trắng nhợt và hàng tỉ con cá đang chết dần chết ṃn. Nơi cây cối bị chặt hạ ở vùng rừng nhiệt đới Amazon giờ đây là một khoảng trống lớn, khô cằn. Vào lúc nửa đêm, trong một trang trại nhỏ cách Uctendort mười lăm dặm, gia đ́nh Lagenfeld bị khuấy động bởi một chuỗi các hiện tượng lạ. Đứa con lớn thức giấc bởi một luồng ánh sáng màu vàng nhạt chiếu qua cửa sổ pḥng ngủ. Khi cậu ta trở dậy để xem chuyện ǵ th́ luồng ánh sáng biến mất.
Ở ngoài sân, Tozzi, con chó săn giống Đức, bắt đầu sủa vang giận dữ, đánh thức ông già Lagenfeld. Ông chủ trại miễn cưỡng rời khỏi giường để nạt con vật thôi sủa, và khi vừa bước ra ngoài th́ nghe tiếng bầy cừu hoảng hot trong chuồng, t́m cách thoát ra.
Khi đi qua cái máng ăn vốn đầy nước do trời mới mưa, ông thấy rằng cái máng khô khốc. Và đúng lúc đó, tất cả đèn trong nhà vụt tắt. Khi ông chủ trại trở vào nhà và nhấc điện thoại để gọi bảo sở điện lực th́ thấy đường dây bị cắt rồi.

Vị bộ trưởng ngồi trong cán pḥng nằm lọt ở trung tâm của toà nhà trụ sở Cục T́nh báo Thuỵ Sĩ, nh́n viên phó giám đốc đang đọc nốt bức điện. Rồi ông ta thu nó về, bỏ vào trong cái cặp hồ sơ có đánh dấu Tuyệt mật, cất cái cặp vào trong ngàn kéo bàn và khoá lại. - Hans Beckerman và Fritz Mandel. - Phải. Không có vấn đề ǵ; thưa ngài bộ trưởng. Chuyện nầy sẽ được lo liệu chu tất. - Tốt. - Sao ạ? - Thủ tiêu. Ngay lập tức.

Leslie Mothershed có thần tượng là Robin Leach. Khi chiếc máy bay lao trên đường băng, những chiếc động cơ Rolls - Royce khổng lồ của nó như uống lấy không khí của trời đêm, Robert thả lỏng người và nhắm mắt lại. Có phải mới chỉ cách đây vài năm ḿnh đă đi cũng chuyến bay nầy, cùng với Susan sang London không nhỉ? Không. Có vẻ như đă cách đây cả một đời người rồi. Khi đó, Robert đă rời khỏi Hải quân được sáu tháng và không hề nói chuyện với vị Đô đốc trong suốt quăng thời gian đó. Cú điện thoại, gọi cho họ tại khách sạn Oriental ở Bangkok, là cả một sự ngạc nhiên. - Robert hả? Đô đốc Whittaker. - Thưa Đô đốc. Thật vui khi nghe thấy tiếng ngài. - Không dễ ǵ t́m được anh đâu. Anh đang theo đuổi chuyện ǵ vậy hả? - Không có ǵ nhiều. Nói một cách đơn giản là chúng tôi đang có một tuần trăng mật dài với nhau. - Susan có khoẻ không? Mà là Susan chứ? - Vâng. Cô ấy khoẻ, cảm ơn ngài. - Anh phải mất bao lâu để trở về Washington hả? - Ngài nói ǵ cơ ạ? - Điều nầy chưa công bố, nhưng tôi đă được bổ nhiệm một chức vụ mới, Robert. Họ cứ tôi làm phó giám đốc Pḥng 17 T́nh báo hải quân. Tôi muốn anh cùng làm việc. Robert giật ḿnh. - T́nh báo hải quân ạ? Thưa Đô đốc, tôi không hề biết ǵ về… - Anh có thể học. Robert kể lại câu chuyện với Susan.
- T́nh báo hải quân à? Có vẻ thú vị đấy. - Có thể, - Robert nói vẻ nghi ngờ. - Anh không hề biết công việc thế nào. - Th́ anh phải t́m hiểu chứ. Anh nh́n cô trong giây lát. - Em muốn anh nhận phải không? Cô quàng tay ôm lấy anh. - Em muốn anh làm bất kỳ điều ǵ mà anh muốn làm. Em nghĩ là anh sẵn sàng trở lại với công việc. Em để ư thấy là trong mấy tuần vừa qua, anh đă trở nên bồn chồn. - Anh nghĩ là em đang t́m cách vứt bỏ anh, - Robert trêu chọc. - Tuần trăng mật đă kết thúc rồi. Susan kề đôi môi cô lại sát môi anh. - Không bao giờ. Em chưa bao giờ nói với anh là em đến phát điên lên v́ anh như thế nào hả, chàng thuỷ thủ? Để em cho anh thấy nhé… Sau nầy nghĩ lại, khỉ đă quá muộn, Robert cho rằng đó chính là lúc bắt đầu của sự chấm dứt cuộc hôn nhân của họ. Lời đề nghị lúc đó có vẻ thật tuyệt vời và anh đă trở lại Washington để gặp Đô đốc Whittaker. - Công việc nầy đ̣i hỏi trí tuệ, ḷng dũng cảm, và sự sáng tạo, Robert ạ. Anh có cả ba thứ đó. Đất nước chúng ta đă trở thành mục tiêu của bất kỳ một chế độ độc tài tầm thường và nhỏ bé nào có thể nuôi dưỡng một nhóm khủng bố hoặc xây dựng một nhà máy chế tạo vũ khí hoá học. Một trong số các nước nầy đang t́m cách sản xuất bom nguyên tử để buộc chúng ta phải hối lộ họ. Công việc của tôi là xây dựng một mạng lướ́ t́nh báo để phát hiện chính xác họ đang làm ǵ và t́m cách ngăn chặn lại. Tôi muốn anh giúp đỡ.
