Tất cả các sự kiện được tŕnh bày cho đến đây dẫn đến một số câu hỏi triết lư sau đây.
Khi một người đă được bác sĩ xác định là chết rồi th́ thật sự họ đă chết chưa? Đó là v́ định nghĩa chết theo y khoa chỉ có nghĩa là một số bộ phận trọng yếu trong cơ thể người nầy đă ngưng hoạt động mặc dù nhiều bộ phận khác có thể vẫn c̣n vận hành. Trong nhiều trường hợp, một người sau khi đă bị bác sĩ cho là chết rồi vẫn có thể hồi sinh. Các bộ phận trọng yếu bác sĩ cho là đă hoàn toàn ngưng hoạt động vẫn có thể hồi phục lại. Và ngay cả khi các bộ phận trọng yếu trên không hồi phục lại và họ không thể hồi sinh được nữa th́, như đă nói, v́ một số bộ phận khác trong cơ thể họ vẫn c̣n hoạt động th́ có thể theo những định nghĩa khác, bởi các tiêu chuẩn y khoa khác, ở những thời điểm trong tương lai khác nào đó khi kỹ thuật y học tiến triển hơn, v.v. th́ có thể nào xem rằng người nầy vẫn chưa thật sự chết hay không?
Ngay khi cơ thể một ông A đă bị hoàn toàn tiêu hủy, thí dụ như sau khi hỏa táng, nếu các bộ phận đă từng trong cơ thể ông ấy được lấy ra và cấy tháp vào cho cơ thể của những người khác th́ có thể nào xem rằng một phần cơ thể của ông A vẫn c̣n sống? Và tùy theo định nghĩa, có thể nào xem rằng một phần của ông A vẫn c̣n sống?
Rồi ngay cả khi tất cả bộ phận, tất cả tế bào trong cơ thể của một người đă tan rữa hết th́ các phân tử, nguyên tử của chúng, như đă nói, vẫn c̣n tồn tại và vận hành trong những sinh vật khác trong thiên nhiên. Như thế th́ có thể xem như một phần cơ thể hay một phần của người đó vẫn c̣n tồn tại?
Khi lư luận theo lối nầy th́ chỉ có thể định nghĩa sự chết bằng một thước đo có nhiều mức độ khác nhau. Sự chết trở thành bất khả chẩn định. Sự chết và sự sống dường như hiện diện lẫn lộn với nhau một cách không thể phân biệt được. Lănh thổ của sự sống được càng lúc càng mở rộng thêm ra và khoa học kỹ thuật đă cho phép nhiều, nếu không phải là tất cả, trường hợp chết đều có thể cứu văn được, ít nhất là trên lư thuyết. Biên giới giữa sự sống và sự chết do đó tùy thuộc vào kiến thức và quan điểm của một người, đó là chưa kể đến phong tục, tập quán và tín ngưỡng của người đó.
Các sự kiện đă được tŕnh bày cho đến đây cũng dẫn đến vài nhận xét sau.
Như đă thấy, việc một người được cho là đă chết rồi nhưng vài ba hôm sau “sống lại” là một việc tương đối rất b́nh thường. Ngay cả với kỹ thuật khoa học hiện đại mà việc nầy cũng xảy ra khá thường xuyên, ngay cả những bác sĩ nhiều kinh nghiệm ngày nay vẫn c̣n đôi khi lầm lẫn trong việc chẩn định. V́ vậy ở vài ngàn năm trước đây đối với những dân quê không hề có một kiến thức y khoa th́ hiện tượng một người chết vài hôm rồi sống lại có thể được xem là một phép lạ. Và “phép lạ” nầy có thể được xem là cực kỳ huyền bí, đủ để góp phần xây dựng nền móng cho một hệ thống tín ngưỡng.
Mặt khác, cũng như đă thấy, một người tuy đă chết nhưng những phân tử vật chất đă từng là cấu trúc của một phần cơ thể họ có thể sẽ luân chuyển măi măi từ sinh vật nầy đến sinh vật khác trong thiên nhiên. Sự kiện nầy có vẻ phù hợp với quan niệm của một số hệ thống tín ngưỡng cho rằng sau khi một người chết th́ họ có khi sẽ “tái sinh” trở lại dưới nhiều dạng thể khác nhau. Và có lúc những phân tử trên thay v́ trở thành một phần của các sinh vật khác th́ chúng cũng có thể tản mác trong không khí, trong đất đá, trong sông suối, v.v. Sự kiện nầy có vẻ phù hợp với quan niệm tín ngưỡng cho rằng sau khi một người chết th́ họ sẽ trở về với vũ trụ bao la (thí dụ như trong Phật Giáo gọi là “đại thể”).

Trong cơ thể một người trưởng thành có khoảng 60 tỉ (1 tỉ = 1 triệu triệu) tế bào. Mỗi ngày số tế bào chết đi có thể đong đầy một chén súp nhỏ. Tuy vậy, một số tế bào khác cũng được sinh ra với số lượng tương ứng để thay thế.
Mỗi lần lớp da trên cơ thể chúng ta va chạm một vật ǵ chẳng hạn th́ sẽ có hàng trăm ngàn tế bào da bên ngoài rơi rớt ra. Lớp tế bào da nằm bảo vệ bên ngoài nầy được liên tục thay thế bằng những tế bào da mọc thêm ra từ bên dưới. Mỗi lần chúng ta nhai nuốt thức ăn th́ hàng chục ngàn tế bào nằm trên màng da trong miệng chúng ta tróc ra và bị nuốt trôi theo. Mỗi ngày hầu như toàn thể tấm màng da trong miệng mỗi người bị nuốt và tiêu hóa mất đi nhưng chúng ta không hề cảm biết v́ nó được bồi đắp liên tục bởi những tế bào mới sinh ra từ bên dưới. Màng bao tử, màng ruột, màng trong của mỗi mạch máu, v.v. cũng vậy. Tế bào của hầu như tất cả mọi bộ phận trong cơ thể đều bị hao ṃn và chết đi trong quá tŕnh hoạt động hàng ngày và được thay thế liên tục.
Trong một đứa trẻ th́ số tế bào sinh ra mỗi ngày sẽ lớn hơn số tế bào bị chết đi nên cơ thể đứa trẻ mới có thể càng ngày càng to lớn khỏe mạnh hơn. Trong một người già th́ số tế bào thay thế sẽ không đủ số lượng và không đủ chất lượng để thay thế hoàn toàn số tế bào chết đi, v́ vậy cơ thể người già càng ngày càng tàn lụn xuống.
Sự chết do đó hiện diện ngay trong người chúng ta hàng ngày, hàng giờ, hàng phút. Đây là phương cách vận hành và tiến triển của sự sống: một phần của cơ thể phải chết đi để được đổi mới và tăng trưởng.
Sự chết ở tầm mức tế bào nầy thật ra bắt đầu trước khi chúng ta chào đời.
Trong quá tŕnh phát triển của bào thai, tế bào tuân theo những quy luật đă định sẵn trong các chuỗi DNA của nó để tự tách ra bội phần rồi kết hợp lại thành những nhóm, những bộ phận khác nhau của cơ thể. Tuy vậy, vài bộ phận trong quá tŕnh phát triển của một bào thai chỉ hiện hữu một thời gian ngắn thôi. Thí dụ khi một bào thaitrong bụng mẹ được khoảng 4 tháng th́ nó bắt đầu mọc nhiều lông tơ khá dầy và dài bao phủ toàn thân kể cả chân tay. Đến vài tuần trước khi sinh ra, bộ lông nầy tự biến mất đi không c̣n dấu vết ǵ nữa.
Đây là v́ loài người và loài khỉ vượn ngày nay đă cùng tiến hóa từ một tổ tiên chung và chủng loại tổ tiên nầy có nhiều lông lá bao phủ cả thân thể chân tay. Trong khi loài khỉ vượn ngày nay vẫn c̣n mang đặc tính lông lá nầy, loài người đă tẻ nhánh trên con đường tiến hóa vài trăm ngàn năm trước đây trở thành một chủng loại có rất ít lông trên thân thể. Tuy vậy, ngay cả ngày nay trong quá tŕnh phát triển của bào thai của con người, một số nhóm tế bào vẫn c̣n chịu ảnh hưởng bởi cấu trúc của nguồn gốc xưa cũ để sản xuất ra một bộ lông dầy như tổ tiên của chúng đă từng làm. Bộ lông nầy, và những tế bào tạo dựng lên nó, rồi sẽ tự tiêu hủy đi một thời gian ngắn trước khi đứa trẻ sinh ra đời.
Tương tự, trong thời kỳ phát triển của bào thai, ngoài bộ lông tơ vừa nói trên, một bộ phận khác có h́nh dạng giống như bộ mang (như của loài cá) cũng được lập thành sơ khởi trong một thời gian ngắn trước khi tự tiêu hủy đi. Bộ mang nầy không phải để thai nhi thở trong bầu nước của bụng mẹ như một số người lầm tưởng (đó là v́ tất cả những ǵ cần thiết để sống đều đă được cung cấp trực tiếp từ người mẹ qua cuống rún của nó). Đây chỉ là v́ loài người, cũng như mọi động vật có xương sống khác, đă tiến hóa từ những sinh vật đă từng sống dưới nước. Một số nhóm tế bào trong thai nhi ngày nay vẫn c̣n chịu ảnh hưởng của tổ tiên chúng nên vẫn phối hợp lại sơ khởi theo đường hướng tạo thành một bộ mang để rồi tự tiêu hủy đi trước khi bộ phổi được tạo h́nh. Tương tự, bào thai của con người có một thời gian có một đuôi khá dài (giống như của loài khỉ vượn) trước khi khúc đuôi nầy tự biến mất.
Nói chung, trong quá tŕnh tạo thành của bào thai, sự chết của những nhóm tế bào trên cần phải xảy ra để toàn thể hệ thống đi đúng theo con đường tiến hóa đă đạt được bởi loài người. Trong suốt thời gian sống, tế bào và các cơ bắp trong cơ thể một người chết đi và được thay thế liên tục theonhững quy định đă được ghi chép sẵn trong cấu trúc chuỗi DNA của họ.

Như đă thấy, sự chết và sự sống luôn luôn hiện hữu cùng lúc và liên tục trong mọi cơ thể động vật. Ngoài ra, sự chết cũng rất cần thiết cho sự sống cho sinh vật.
Thí dụ như bộ da đang bao phủ cơ thể chúng ta, nói chung là nó gồm có hai lớp chính: lớp tế bào “sống” nằm bên trong và lớp tế bào bảo vệ nằm bên ngoài. Lớp tế bào “sống” bên trong rất mỏng manh;chúngkhông thể chịu đựng được sự tiếp xúc trực tiếp với không khí, bụi bặm và các va chạm hàng ngày. Lớp tế bào bảo vệ bên ngoài mang dạng nhữngtấm vẩy tinh thể màu trong đục được gắn dính với nhau bằng một lớp dầu mỏng; chúng làm bằng chất keratin (tương tự như chất sừng) khá cứng và do đó theo định nghĩa được xem là các tế bào “chết”. Tính chất nầy cần thiết để chúng có thể chịu đựng được môi trường bên ngoài và bảo vệ lớp tế bào da mỏng manh hơn bên trong. Mỗi ngày có khoảng 500 ngàn triệu các tế bào “chêt” nầy tróc ra khỏi bộ da của chúng ta. Mỗi khi một số tế bào da chết bên ngoài mất đi th́ các tế bào sống bên trong được đẩy ra lên trên để thay thế, và chúng tự chế tạo chất sừng keratin đầy trong thân thể của chúng, có nghĩa là tự biến thể từ trạng thái sống sang trạng thái chết để làm tṛn nhiệm vụ bảo vệ cần thiết của chúng.
Tương tự như đă nói ở trên, tế bào của các cơ quan trong nội tạng chúng ta cũng cần phải liên tục chết đi và được thay thế trong khi thi hành vai tṛ của chúng.
Dĩ nhiên hiện tượng sự chết hiện hữu song song và cần thiết cho sự sống vừa kể trên xảy ra với con người cũng như với vô số động vật khác. Một thí dụ thường thấy nhất là quá tŕnh biến đổi từ trứng qua ṇng nọc đến trưởng thành của loài cóc nhái. Ṇng nọc sống dưới nước, di chuyển và săn mồi bằng đuôi của chúng. Đến khoảng 14 tuần th́ một số tế bào trong đuôi chúng bỗng chuyển qua tấn công, tiêu diệt và tiêu thụ (nghĩa là ăn sống) các tế bào đồng loại chung quanh. Kết quả là cái đuôi nầy dần dần biến đi trong khi bộ chân phát triển ra và con ṇng nọc dưới nước trở thành một con cóc/nhái có thể sinh sống, di chuyển dễ dàng trên bờ.
Tóm lại, rất nhiều khi sự sống cần phải tự giết nó đi để mới có thể tiếp tục tồn tại được.

Sự chết cũng cần thiết để bảo tồn sự cân bằng trong môi trường sống.
Nếu không có sự chết th́ dân số của mọi sinh vật sẽ gia tăng măi măi. Chủng loại nào sinh sản nhanh chóng nhất sẽ chiếm đóng tất cả lănh thổ trên địa cầu. Trong mỗi phân khối của đất có chứa vài trăm triệu các vi khuẩn đủ loại. Chúng liên tục tranh giành thức ăn, không gian sống, v.v. và giết hại, tiêu thụ lẫn nhau. Nếu không có sự chết th́ chỉ một vi khuẩn duy nhất trong ṿng vài tiếng đồng hồ có thể từ nó sản xuất ra một số lượng vi khuẩn con cháu tương đương với khối lượng một con người. Chỉ trong ṿng vài ngày th́ toàn thể bề mặt địa cầu sẽ bị bao phủ bởi một lớp dầy hôi thúi và đầy màu sắc sặc sỡ của đủ loại vi khuẩn.
Tương tự, nếu không có sự chết th́ bất cứ loại vi sinh vật cao cấp hơn vi khuẩn nào khác cũng có thể đưa địa cầu đến một t́nh trạng tương tự bằng dân số của chúng trong khoảng 40 ngày. Loài ruồi nhà cần khoảng cần khoảng 4 năm. Loài chuột cần khoảng 8 năm. Phần đông mỗi loài dây leo cần 11 năm. Loài voi cần khoảng một thế kỷ.
May mắn thay, sự sinh sôi nẩy nở và bành trướng của nhiều chủng loại được tự kềm chế bởi chính sự sinh hoạt và vận hành của chúng. Trong trường hợp thực vật, mọi cây cỏ đều phát triển mạnh mẽ trong đất có ít chất lượng nitrogen.Khi một giống thực vật gặp được một khu đất có ít lượng nitrogen dân số nó sẽ bột phát và bành trướng nhanh chóng. Tuy nhiên, trong quá tŕnh phát triển, mọi cây cỏ đều thải ra nitrogen vào trong đất mà chúng đang sống. Do đó, sau không bao lâu th́ môi trường sống của giống thực vật trên chứa quá nhiều nitrogen (mà chúng ta gọi nôm na là khu đất đó đă “chết”) nên chúng sẽ không c̣n phát triển được thêm nữa và dân số chúng sẽ dần dần cằn cỗi đi và thu nhỏ lại.
Những chủng loại không có các cơ cấu tự kềm chế và kiểm soát nầy th́ sẽ có những sinh vật khác sử dụng chúng như nguồn tài nguyên (nghĩa là thức ăn) để sống. Khi dân số một chủng loại A trong một môi trường sống bộc phát đến mức độ nào đó, nguyên tắc tranh đấu để sống c̣n trong quá tŕnh tuyển chọn bởi thiên nhiên luôn luôn dẫn đến sự kiện có ít nhất một chủng loại B sẽ tiến hóa trở thành có khả năng tiêu thụ năng lượng sống của chủng loại A. Dân số chủng loại B sẽ dần dần gia tăng trong khi dân số chủng loại A sẽ bị kềm chế và dần dần giảm xuống. Đến một mức độ nào đó chính chủng loại B cũng sẽ bị ít nhất một chủng loại C khác sử dụng cùng một nguyên tắc trên để làm cho dân số chúng ngừng phát triển.

1. Sự kém hiểu biết về y học và sinh vật học đă dẫn đến vô số trường hợp chẩn định lầm lẫn về một người đă chết hay chưa. Điều nầy dẫn đến việc nhiều bệnh nhân tuy bị cho rằng đă chết vẫn “hồi sinh” lại sau một thời gian ngắn. Điều nầy cũng dẫn đến việc nhiều bệnh nhân bị mai táng, hoặc hỏa táng, khi họ thật ra vẫn c̣n sống. Hiện tượng trên hiện thỉnh thoảng vẫn xảy ra ngay tại những quốc gia tân tiến nhất.
Nói cách khác, nếu việc một người chết 3 ngày rồi sống có thể được xem là một phép lạ ở 2000 năm về trước th́ điều đó là một chuyện xảy ra khá thông thường ngày nay. Nguyên do chỉ là từ sự lầm lẫn trong việc xác định người đó đă thật sự chết hẳn hay chưa.
2. Việc chẩn định sự chết rất phức tạp. Sự tiến bộ của kiến thức và kỹ thuật y học ngày nay thật ra không nhất thiết làm vấn đề nầy trở thành dễ dàng hơn mà c̣n có thể dẫn đến nhiều định nghĩa chết khác nhau. Biên giới giữa sự sống và sự chết trở thành rất mơ hồ và hầu như không thể nào khẳng định rơ rệt được.
Nói cách khác, một người có thể được một bác sĩ tại một bệnh viện ở một quốc gia cho là đă chết trong khi một bác sĩ tại một bệnh viện ở một quốc gia khác cho là vẫn c̣n sống.
3. Sự chết của một người thường không phải là một quá tŕnh xảy ra trong tích tắc mà xảy ra qua nhiều giai đoạn. Có thể nói là có nhiều mức độ chết khác nhau. Cũng có thể nói là sự chết có tính chất từng phần. Đó là tùy bộ phận nào trong cơ thể đă ngưng hoạt động rồi, và đă ngưng hoạt động vĩnh viễn không c̣n cách ǵ cứu chữa hay chưa.
Nói cách khác, khi một người được bác sĩ xác định là đă chết th́ không hẳn tất cả bộ phận trong cơ thể họ đă ngừng hoạt động hoàn toàn và vĩnh viễn. Có khi có những bộ phận nếu được hỗ trợ bởi dụng cụ y khoa vẫn có thể hồi phục hoàn toàn và tiếp tục làm việc lâu dài. Do đó người ta có thể dùng nhiều bộ phận (từ tim, phổi, mắt, v.v. cho đến da, xương, gân, v.v.) của một người đă được xem là chết để gép tháp vào nhiều bệnh nhân khác.
4. Sự chết của một người thường không hẵn là một hiện tượng tuyệt đối mà chỉ là một liên hệ tương đối giữa người nầy và một, hay nhiều, người khác. Tất cả do đó đều tùy vào tŕnh độ kiến thức và kỹ thuật y học cũng như tiêu chuẩn và định nghĩa khác nhau được dùng để xác định sự chết. Sự chết của một người do đó là một sự kiện tương đối và tùy thuộc vào sự phán xét của người khác.
Nói cách khác, một người nằm hôn mê hoàn toàn trong bệnh viện vẫn có thể được máy móc giữ cho “sống” ở t́nh trạng đó măi măi cho đến khi bác sĩ hay gia đ́nh quyết định rằng họ đă trở thành tương đương với “chết” và tắt máy đi.
5. Sự mơ hồ của biên giới giữa sự sống và sự chết cũng có thể nh́n thấy được ở môi trường vi mô. Vi trùng, vi khuẩn, v.v. là những dạng sinh vật cơ bản nhất. Có thể nói là chúng nằm ở đầu cầu nối liền giữa các vật thể có sự sống và các vật thể không có sự sống. Khi nh́n sâu hơn nữa, ở cấp bậc phân tử và nguyên tử, th́ hai dạng vật thể nầy (“sống” và “không sống”) đều có cấu trúc vận hành hoàn toàn giống nhau.
Nói cách khác, khi quan sát các dạng vật thể ở kích thước nầy, người ta không thể nào phân biệt được sự “không sống” chấm dứt ở đâu và sự “sống” bắt đầu ở đâu.
6. Một điều có thể thấy rơ ràng là cấu trúc phân tử của cá vật thể có sự sống được xếp đặt và vận hành một cách khác biệt so với những vật thể không có sự sống. Cấu trúc và cách vận hành của các vật thể có sự sống tuân theo những tŕnh tự, những thiết kế đă có sẵn và có khả năng thu nhận năng lượng từ bên ngoài để duy tŕ một mức độ trật tự cần thiết để chúng có thể tiếp tục tồn tại và vận hành như một sinh vật. Những vật thể không có sự sống, hay những vật thể đă chết, không có các tính chất trên.
7. Vi trùng, hầu hết mọi vi khuẩn và vi sinh vật đơn tế bào đều sinh sản bằng cách tự phân trực tiếp. Mỗi cá thể mẹ có thể tự tách ra thành hai hay nhiều cá thể con gái khác với cấu trúc và chất liệu hoàn toàn giống hệt như mẹ. Trong một môi trường sống lư tưởng, chúng có thể tiếp tục tự tái tạo cách nầy và sống vĩnh viễn.
Nói cách khác, với cách sinh sản nầy, mỗi cá thể của chúng trở thành bất tử.
8. Một số vi khuẩn và vi sinh vật cũng có thể trao đổi các chất liệu di truyền giữa những cá thể dạng “đực” và dạng “cái” trong quá tŕnh sinh sản của chúng. Đây là bước đầu tiên trong lịch sử tiến hóa của chủng loại khi sinh vật bắt đầu đi theo con đường sinh sản qua t́nh dục. Phương pháp sinh sản nầy tạo ra những cá thể có các đặc tính và chất liệu di truyền khác biệt với cha lẫn mẹ chúng. Đây là một lợi điểm lớn trong sự sinh tồn và bành trướng của chủng loại. Tuy nhiên phương pháp sinh sản nầy cũng không cho phép mỗi cá thể tự tái tạo và sống vĩnh viễn, chúng trở thành già cỗi đi và chết.
Nói cách khác, sinh vật đă trả giá cho khả năng t́nh dục bằng sự chết.
9. Tế bào trong cơ thể mọi sinh vật cũng là một dạng cá thể cơ bản sinh sản bằng phương pháp tự phân tương tự như vi khuẩn. Trong mỗi tế bào đều có chứa đầy đủ mọi chất liệu di truyền cần thiết để tái tạo và xây dựng thành tất cả các bộ phận trong cơ thể của sinh vật đó. Tuy vậy mỗi tế bào đều tự được kiểm soát và điều khiển bởi những chuỗi mă di truyền để có các nhiệm vụ và cách vận hành khác nhau.
10. Khi xét về một sinh vật đa tế bào th́ quan niệm về cá thể và định nghĩa của sự chết trở thành rất phức tạp. Mỗi tế bào trong cơ thể một sinh vật đều là một cá thể có những vận hành và sinh hoạt riêng của nó. Đồng thời, tuy là một cá thể độc lập về lănh vực sống chết, mỗi tế bào cũng là một thành phần cơ bản của cấu trúc, thân thể và sự hiện hữu của một con vật.
Nói cách khác, có một quan hệ vừa tuyệt đối cách biệt vừa cực kỳ mật thiết giữa mỗi tế bào trong thân thể một cá nhân và chính cá nhân đó. Sự chết có thể xảy ra riêng rẽ đến một tế bào mà không hề ảnh hưởng đến cá nhân đó và ngược lại.
11. Tất cả những vấn đề mơ hồ, phức tạp, tương đối về sự sống chết giữa con người và tế bào cũng xảy ra ở kích thước của tế bào và các phân tử, nguyên tử cấu tạo nên chúng. Những nguyên tử, phân tử cấu tạo thành một tế bào có thể bị hủy hoại v́ lư do ǵ đó nhưng không hề ảnh hưởng đến tế bào trên, và ngược lại.
12. Chúng ta có thể thấy một sự liên hệ rộng lớn và mật thiết giữa tất cả cá thể trong vũ trụ. Trong thiên nhiên, v́ mọi sinh vật đều tiêu thụ các sinh vật khác để thu lấy năng lượng cần thiết cho sự sống của ḿnh nên các nguyên tử, phân tử cấu tạo thành những chất liệu có sự sống được luân chuyển trong vô số chu kỳ không ngừng nghỉ từ sinh vật nầy sang sinh vật khác.
Nói cách khác, khi một sinh vật được cho là chết th́ một số các tế bào cấu tạo nên cơ thể sinh vật đó có thể vẫn c̣n mang sự sống. Ngay khi các tế bào nầy bị hư hủy đi th́ các nguyên tử, phân tử cấu tạo nên chúng vẫn c̣n hiện hữu và luân hành từ sinh vật nầy sang sinh vật khác.
13. Sự chết do đó chỉ có thể định nghĩa bằng một thước đo có nhiều mức độ khác nhau. Sự chết trở thành bất khả chẩn định. Sự chết và sự sống dường như hiện diện lẫn lộn với nhau một cách không thể phân biệt được. Lănh thổ của sự sống được càng lúc càng mở rộng thêm ra và khoa học kỹ thuật đă cho phép nhiều, nếu không phải là tất cả, trường hợp chết đều có thể cứu văn được, ít nhất là trên lư thuyết.
Nói cách khác, biên giới giữa sự sống và sự chết do đó tùy thuộc vào kiến thức và quan điểm của một người, đó là chưa kể đến phong tục, tập quán và tín ngưỡng của người đó.
14. Sự chết và sự sống luôn luôn hiện hữu cùng lúc và liên tục trong mọi cơ thể động vật. Trong người chúng ta hàng ngày, hàng giờ, hàng phút có hàng trăm triệu tế bào chết đi và hàng trăm triệu khác sinh ra. Ngoài ra, sự chết cũng rất cần thiết cho sự sống cho sinh vật. Có nhiều trường hợp một phần của cơ thể phải chết đi để được đổi mới và tăng trưởng. Trong nhiều trường hợp khác sự chết cần thiết để bảo tồn sự cân bằng trong môi trường sống. Đó là phương cách vận hành và tiến triển của sự sống.
Do đó, một người khi hiểu được điều nầy sẽ có thể giảm bớt sự sợ hăi và khuynh hướng né tránh việc suy ngẫm bàn luận về vấn đề chết của họ. Và có một câu danh ngôn cho rằng “nếu một người chưa hiểu biết về sự chết, họ chưa hiểu biết về sự sống”.

PHẢN ỨNG CỦA CON NGƯỜI TRƯỚC SỰ CHẾT
Trước khi thật sự vào Phần II tôi muốn đăng vài bài nói về "PHẢN ỨNG CỦA CON NGƯỜI TRƯỚC SỰ CHẾT".
[COLOR="#800000"][B]Tang Lễ: Một H́nh Thức Phủ Nhận[/B]
Tỷ lệ tử vong trong tất cả mọi sinh vật là 100%. Khi một người chết đi th́ gia đ́nh và xă hội chung quanh họ sẽ dùng những quy luật, thủ tục đă có sẵn từ bao đời để áp dụng cho họ.
Dân tộc Ashanti ở miền tây Phi Châu chôn người chết của họ dưới mặt đất với tư thế nằm nghiêng bên trái và hai tay lót dưới đầu. Thổ dân Tiwi ở miền bắc Úc để người chết nằm trên mặt đất rồi phủ đất đá lên trên. Một nhóm thổ dân Úc khác ở New South Wales nung khói tử thi cho đến khi nó khô cứng lại trước khi bỏ vào hang động. Dân tộc Bavenda ở Nam Phi bỏ người chết vào nhà của họ, đóng cửa lại bỏ đi và căn nhà đó trở thành nhà mồ của họ. Người da đỏ Sioux khâu người chết vào trong những bộ da nai hoặc ḅ rừng rồi để trên những tàng cây cao. Vài sắc dân Tây Tạng chặt tử thi làm từng khúc, lóc thịt ra khỏi xương, nghiền xương nhỏ ra rồi trộn tất cả với bột lúa mạch và mang đến những bờ núi cao cho thú hoang ăn. Vài sắc dân khác chỉ gói tử thi lại bằng vải thô rồi đem để thẳng lên núi để cho kên kên và chó sói ăn. Tín đồ Ấn Độ giáo chen chúc bên bờ con sông Ganges để hỏa thiêu xác người thân họ rồi rải tro xuống nước; có những tử thi không cần được hỏa thiêu mà được thả thẳng xuống sông. Người Việt Nam hoặc mai táng người chết trong nghĩa trang, hoặc hỏa táng, với những nghi thức cúng tụng rườm rà tùy theo tôn giáo mỗi người.
Thật ra tất cả mọi dân tộc đều có những thủ tục nghi lễ đi kèm theo đám tang của thân nhân họ. Ngay từ những nhóm người tiền sử cho đến những xă hội tân tiến nhất ngày nay. Và tất cả các thủ tục nghi lễ tang chế nầy đều cùng mang một hàm ư duy nhất: chết không phải là kết thúc mà chỉ là một quá tŕnh chuyển tiếp. Và đây là điều mà tất cả con người đều mong ước: chinh phục sự chết và trở thành bất tử.
Niềm sợ hăi về sự chết và sự tan biến vào hư vô dẫn đến phản ứng và hành vi trên của con người.
Con người là ǵ? Thứ nhất, con người là một con vật biết suy nghĩ. Thứ hai, con người là một con vật nhận biết được thế lực bất khả kháng của sự chết đang chờ đợi họ. Họ nhận biết thế nào rồi họ cũng sẽ phải chết. Và trong tiềm thức họ cũng biết rằng sau khi chết họ sẽ trở thành hư không. Tuy vậy có cái ǵ đó trong đầu họ làm cho họ muốn phủ nhận và chống đối lại việc nầy.
Cho đến nay không có bằng chứng nào cho thấy bất cứ loài vật nào khác có cùng khuynh hướng trên. Dĩ nhiên là mọi loài vật đều tuân theo bản năng sống c̣n tự nhiên và phản ứng khi đứng trước những nguy hiểm có thể dẫn đến sự chết. Tuy vậy, không giống như con người, chúng không hề có hành vi ǵ có vẻ như muốn phủ nhận việc hiện hữu đương nhiên của sự chết.
Hầu như tất cả những việc ǵ con người làm đều bị ảnh hưởng bởi sự nhận biết và sự cố gắng kháng cự lại sự chết của họ. Có thể nói niềm sợ hăi về sự chết là một trong những yếu tố quan trọng nhất điều khiển mọi tư tưởng và hành vi hàng ngày mặc dù khi họ thường không cảm nhận được điều nầy.
Trong những người trẻ tuổi và những người có sức khỏe dồi dào th́ niềm sợ hăi về sự chết, tuy vẫn hiện diện trong tiềm thức, thường không nằm túc trực trên tri thức của họ. Những người già yếu hay bệnh tật nghiêm trọng th́ sự chết là một điều chiếm đóng các suy nghĩ của họ thường xuyên.
Một trong những phương cách hữu hiệu nhất để con người yên tâm về vấn đề chết là tự trấn an họ bằng các mơ ước và tưởng tượng một sự sống trường cửu sau cái chết mà họ không thể nào tránh được. Không những chỉ mơ ước và tưởng tượng mà thôi, con người c̣n cho phép họ tin tưởng vào ảo vọng trên như một sự kiện thực tế. Mê tín dị đoan và tín ngưỡng, tôn giáo nhờ thế ra đời và thịnh hành.
Khi đứng trước những tàn phá của thiên tai, bệnh hoạn, nguy hiểm, v.v. (tất cả đều có thể dẫn đến sự chết), con người cảm thấy vô cùng tuyệt vọng với sự nhỏ bé và bất lực của họ. Để chống chọi lại niềm tuyệt vọng nầy, họ muốn và cần có một sự bảo vệ từ một thế lực lớn mạnh hơn họ. Con người nhân cách hóa những mối hiểm nguy trong thiên nhiên mà họ không có đủ kiến thức để giải thích hay chống trả được; họ gọi chúng là các “thần linh”. Rồi như những con thú yếu đuối cần có sự che chở của con thú đầu đàn, con người sáng tạo ra những “thượng đế”. Quan niệm nầy cho phép con người biến đổi từ những con thú bất lực trước sự tàn nhẫn lạnh lùng của thiên nhiên trở thành những sinh vật có giá trị đặc biệt có thể cầu xin để được ưu đăi và yêu thương bởi những thượng đế của họ. Quan niệm nầy rất có ích lợi cho sự sống c̣n của nhân loại v́ nó làm dịu bớt đi được phần nào nỗi lo sợ vô vọng về sự chết luôn luôn ngấm ngầm cắn rứt trong tiềm thức của họ.
Như đă thấy ở trên, khi đồng loại của họ chết, con người ngay từ xưa nay đă chế đặt ra đủ loại nghi thức, luật lệ (mà họ gọi là “tang lễ”) để giải quyết sự việc nầy. Trước nhất, họ muốn bám víu vào ư tưởng rằng chết không có nghĩa là chấm dứt tất cả. Đồng thời họ muốn né tránh không phải nh́n thấy sự hư hoại, thối rữa, tiêu hủy xảy ra với cơ thể đă chết của đồng loại họ (và một ngày nào đó của chính họ).

[B]Tang Lễ: Một Hành Tŕnh Không Trở Lại[/B]
Khi nh́n kỹ vào một đám tang của hầu như bất cứ dân tộc và tôn giáo nào, chúng ta có thể thấy những lễ nghi trong đám tang ấy có hai mục đích chính. Thứ nhất, người c̣n sống muốn biểu lộ ḷng thương tiếc của họ trước một sự mất mát to lớn và thi hành những thủ tục nhằm giúp đỡ thân nhân vừa chết của ḿnh có một “đời sống” tốt đẹp ở một thế giới khác nào đó dựa trên niềm tín ngưỡng của họ. Thứ hai, họ muốn bảo đảm rằng người đă chết sẽ không thể trở về để quấy nhiễu họ.
Ở đây tôi muốn chú trọng vào mục đích thứ hai kể trên.
Con người luôn luôn sợ hăi về sự chết, và do đó sợ hăi cả người chết, kể cả người thân của họ. Vô số nghi thức tang lễ và phong tục đă được chế đặt ra với dụng ư để bảo vệ người c̣n sống. Nhiều nghi thức tang lễ để cố tránh làm phật ḷng người vừa chết hoặc phật ḷng các ma quỷ thần thánh đă gây ra cái chết của người ấy. Nhiều nghi lễ để cố ngăn cách và ngăn cản không cho người chết lẫn ma quỷ có cơ hội tiếp xúc và làm hại người c̣n sống.
Có vô h́nh vạn trạng những nghi thức tang lễ tùy theo dân tộc, thời điểm cũng như tín ngưỡng, tôn giáo. Tất cả những nghi thức tang lễ ngày nay, của bất cứ dân tộc nào, đều bắt nguồn từ các phong tục mê tín dị đoan được bắt đầu và thịnh hành nhiều thế kỷ, hay có khi hàng ngàn năm, trước.
Phong tục vuốt mắt người vừa chết khép lại xuất phát từ niềm tin cần phải đóng chặt cánh cửa thông thương giữa thế giới người c̣n sống và thế giới của người vừa chết lại. Phong tục đậy mặt người vừa chết lại là để cho hồn của người chết không thể trốn thoát trở về thế giới người sống qua miệng và mũi của họ. Có những bộ lạc Phi Châu sẽ đốt cháy nhà của một người vừa được chôn để hồn của họ không trở về ở được.
Vào thế kỷ 19 ở Âu Châu và Mỹ Châu, người chết (hoặc quan tài của họ) được khiêng ra khỏi nhà với chân đi trước để cho hồn của họ không thể nh́n ngược lại được vào nhà và lôi kéo người nào khác trong gia đ́nh đi theo họ. Phong tục nầy cũng áp dụng trong hầu hết mọi tang lễ ở Việt Nam. Tất cả gương soi trong nhà có tang lễ đều bị phủ vải kín để hồn người chết không bị kẹt dính vào bên trong chúng và không thể đi ra khỏi nhà được. Các tấm ảnh gia đ́nh đều được úp mặt xuống để hồn người chết không thể ám những thân nhân c̣n sống trong ảnh.
Ở nhiều xứ Á Châu khi một người vừa chết, gia đ́nh họ thay phiên nhau canh giữ tử thi ngày đêm cho đến khi mai táng. Một trong những lư do họ làm việc nầy là để tránh thú vật (nhất là mèo) đến gần hay nhảy qua tử thi v́ họ tin rằng người chết có thể bị dương khí của con thú làm tạm thời sống lại và trở thành “quỷ nhập tràng”.
Có những dân tộc áp dụng nhu cầu “bảo vệ người c̣n sống” một cách rất cực đoan. Dân Saxon (tổ tiên của dân tộc Anh) cắt đứt chân của người chết để họ không thể đi trở về được. Một số bộ lạc Nam Mỹ cắt đứt rời đầu của người chết và chôn nó riêng để người chết v́ quá bận rộn t́m kiếm đầu ḿnh nên không có thời giờ phá rối người c̣n sống.
Những tảng đá và bia mộ to lớn nặng nề trong nghĩa trang có thể đă xuất phát từ niềm tin rằng đè giữ hồn người chết lại để họ không thể trồi lên được. Nhiều nhà mồ cổ ở Âu Châu có lối ra vào ngoằn ngoèo để không cho hồn người chết thoát ra ngoài v́ người ta lúc đó tin rằng linh hồn chỉ có thể di chuyển theo đường thẳng. Nhiều gia đ́nh, ngay cả ở Việt Nam ngày nay, sau khi làm lễ mai táng cho người thân họ sẽ trở về nhà theo một lối đi khác hẳn với lối họ đă đi đến nghĩa trang. Họ tin rằng làm như vậy th́ hồn người chết sẽ không biết đường nào để đi theo họ trở về nhà lại.
Ngay cả một số nghi thức tang lễ ngày nay được xem như là dấu hiệu tôn trọng người vừa chết có khi thật ra đă xuất phát từ vấn đề “bảo vệ người c̣n sống”. Nổi kèn trống inh ỏi, dộng chuông nhà thờ hay chuông chùa, dàn chào bắn súng, v.v. trong nhiều phong tục dân tộc đều đă từng có ư nghĩa để làm các ma quỷ đang hiện diện xung quanh tang lễ sợ hăi và tránh xa ra.
Ở các thế kỷ 17, 18 những người dân Anh vừa mới có đám tang trong gia đ́nh đều đeo màng vải đen thưa che mặt họ lại mỗi khi đi ra đường. Người ta thời đó tin rằng hồn người vừa chết thường lảng vảng chung quanh thân nhân họ; nếu một người lạ nh́n thẳng vào mặt người đang có tang th́ hồn người chết có thể nhập vào người lạ nầy. Ngày nay, người ta đeo màng vải thưa trên mặt tại đám tang vừa để che dấu sự sầu khổ trên mặt và vừa như một món thời trang.
Những người khiêng quan tài thường mang găng tay. Ngày nay việc nầy được xem là một trong những h́nh thức giúp cho tang lễ tăng phần long trọng. Tuy nhiên phong tục nầy đă xuất phát từ niềm tin rằng nếu những người nầy đụng tay trần của họ vào quan tài th́ hồn người chết sẽ dễ chui qua da tay và xâm nhập vào họ.
Ở nhiều nghĩa trang Âu Châu, đại đa số các người chết chôn trong mộ đều nằm đầu quay về hướng Tây và chân quay về hướng Đông. Đây là một phong tục rất xưa xuất phát từ những tôn giáo cổ của Âu Châu thờ đa thần và thiên nhiên (Paganism). Những người nầy cho rằng chôn như vậy th́ người chết sẽ nh́n thấy và đi về phía đông là hướng mặt trời mọc (biểu tượng cho sự sống lại). Thiên Chúa Giáo sau nầy đă tiếp tục sử dụng quan niệm sẵn có đó để biến thành niềm tin rằng vào ngày Phán Xét th́ đấng cứu thế của họ sẽ đi đến từ phương Đông; v́ vậy ngay cả ngày nay nhiều nghĩa trang Tây Phương vẫn c̣n tuân theo cách xếp đặt trên.
