Stock markets rarely move in straight lines but nervous Vietnamese investors have done their best to buck that trend of late, with shares falling for nine sessions in a row amid worries about the economic outlook.
The benchmark VN Index closed down 3.6 per cent at 402.59 points on Tuesday.
Shares on the 11-year-old Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange have now lost 16.7 per cent since May 11, as falls have precipitated a series of margin calls
Traders said investors were worried about inflation, which accelerated to 19.8 per cent year-on-year in May according to figures released on Tuesday, and the possible impact on businesses of high interest rates, part of the government’s plan to stabilise the fast-growing but shaky Vietnamese economy.
Even in developed economies, stock markets are not necessarily reliable leading indicators. That’s definitely the case in places like Vietnam, where the stock market is small and illiquid, with a total market capitalisation of just over $30bn, less than a third of annual GDP, and an average daily trading value of around $30m.
Fiachra MacCana, head of research at Ho Chi Minh City Securities, a local brokerage, said investors were reaching “capitulation” point.
“The market is in free fall because we’re in the very last stage of a bear market, when everybody throws up their hands and dumps things out of the window,” he said.
Vietnam’s government achieved an impressive average growth rate of seven per cent per annum over the last decade as it expanded credit rapidly. But it came at the cost of high inflation, a depreciating currency, wide trade and budget deficits and financial problems at state-owned companies.
In February the government unveiled a packaged of fiscal and monetary tightening measures designed to tackle these problems but many investors are yet to be convinced that the consensus-oriented Communist leadership has the political will to drive through painful changes.
MacCana, on the other hand, believes that the economic situation has got so grim, that the only way will eventually be up.
“You can only be optimistic about a frontier market when everything is going wrong,” he said. “The deeper into the hole we are, the better it looks.”
He believes that, having gone through a short, sharp boom and bust period, the government has realised the need to shift course and dole out some uncomfortable medicine.
But, while he argued that Vietnam was at a “turning point”, he warned the country was not out of the woods yet.
“The price of coming so close to a crisis has not yet been paid. There will be enormous pain and suffering and we are almost certainly heading for a hard landing in the third and fourth quarters,” he said..."
