Waco. Texas.
Dan Wayne có một ngày không vui. Mà chính xác th́ là một ngày vô cùng tệ hại. Ông vừa trở về từ toà án quận Waco, nơi ông phải đối mặt với các thủ tục về vỡ nợ. William Mann là một trong những sinh vật thích nghi đó, một kẻ sống sót. Ông ta sinh ra ở Michigan, nhưng hồi ngoài ba mươi tuổi, đă đến Fort Smith trên một chiếc tàu đánh cá và cho rằng cộng đồng nơi đây cần có một nhà băng tốt hơn. Ông ta đă chộp được cơ hội. Olga đă làm việc tại một thư viện trên quảng trường Lenkosomol ở trung tâm Kiev bẩy năm trời. Cô ba mươi hai tuổi và chưa bao giờ bước chân ra khỏi Liên Xô. Trông Olga khá hấp dẫn, hơi mập một chút, nhưng ở Nga th́ điều đó không bị coi là một nhược điềm.
Cô đă từng kết hôn với hai người đàn ông, và họ đều đă bỏ rơi cô: Dmitri, người đă đi Leningrad, và Ivan, người đă bỏ đi Mátxcơva. Olga đă toan đi theo để cùng sống với Ivan, nhưng không có hộ khẩu Mátxcơva th́ điều đó là không thể được.

Bốn ô kính lớn đầy ngập, đủ các loại khác nhau. Có cả chuối bao chocolat và những hạt chocolat trong chứa một chút rượu hảo hạng. Chỉ nh́n thôi cũng đă thấy sướng. Olga những muốn mua tất cả, nhưng khi biết giá rồi th́ đành chỉ mua một hộp thập cẩm nhỏ và một hộp lớn những chocolat thanh.
