Ngôn ngữ Sài Gòn xưa: Những chữ vay mượn (2)
Sang đến thời kỳ Pháp thuộc , Việt Nam nói chung và Sài Gòn nói riêng đã trở thành thuộc địa của Pháp. Cũng vì thế, tiếng Pháp đã có ảnh hưởng sâu rộng đến đời sống văn hóa, xã hội của người Việt. Tiếng Pháp được sử dụng trong các văn bản, giấy tờ của Chính phủ Bảo hộ và trong giảng dạy ở nhà trường, bên cạnh đó là các loại sách báo thâm nhập đời sống thường ngày của người dân.
Chữ Quốc ngữ, vốn được tạo ra bởi một số nhà truyền giáo Tây phương, đặc biệt là linh mục Alexandre de Rhodes (tác giả cuốn Từ điển Việt-Bồ-La năm 1651), với mục đích dùng kư tự Latinh làm nền tảng cho tiếng Việt. “Latinh hóa” chữ Việt ngày càng được phổ biến để trở thành Quốc ngữ, chịu ảnh hưởng bởi những thuật ngữ, từ ngữ mới của ngôn ngữ Tây phương, chủ yếu là từ tiếng Pháp.

Khi nắm được ba tỉnh Nam Bộ, người Pháp đă nắm trong tay một công cụ vô cùng hữu hiệu để truyền bá văn hoá đồng thời chuyển văn hoá cũ theo hướng văn hoá Pháp. Tờ Gia Định Báo là tờ báo đầu tiên được phát hành bằng chữ Quốc ngữ vào năm 1865, khẳng định sự phát triển và xu hướng của chữ Quốc Ngữ như là chữ viết chính thức của nước Việt Nam sau này.
Đối với người bình dân, việc tiếp nhận tiếng Pháp đến một cách rất tự nhiên. Người ta có thể nói “Cắt tóc, thui dê” để chỉ ngày Quốc khánh Pháp 14/7, Quatorze Juliet. Người ta có thể dùng tiếng Tây “bồi” nhưng lại không cảm thấy xấu hổ vì vốn liếng tiếng Pháp của mình chỉ đếm được trên đầu ngón tay. Để tả con cọp, người ta có thể dài dòng văn tự: “tí ti giôn, tí ti noa, lủy xực me-xừ, lủy xực cả moi”. Diễn nôm câu này là một chút màu vàng (jaune), một chút màu đen (noir), nó ăn thịt ông (monsieur), nó ăn thịt cả tôi (moi).
Nhân đây cũng xin nói thêm về những đại danh từ nhân xưng như toa (anh, mày – toi), moa hay mỏa (tôi, tao – moi), en hay ẻn (cô ấy, chị ấy – elle), lúy hay lủy (anh ấy, hắn – lui), xừ hay me-xừ (ông, ngài – monsieur)... Học trò trường Tây, những nhà trí thức khoa bảng hay cả những kẻ tỏ ra “thời thượng” ngày xưa thường dùng những đại từ này. Cũng vì thế có một câu mang tính cách châm chọc: “Hôm qua moa đi xe lửa, buồn đái quá nên moa phải đái trên đầu toa” (toa ở đây có 2 nghĩa: toa xe lửa nhưng cũng có ý là toi (anh) trong tiếng Pháp).
Người Pháp xây dựng đường xe lửa đầu tiên ở Việt Nam tại Sài Gòn từ năm 1881. Đây là đoạn đường ray (rail) từ Cột cờ Thủ Thiêm đến bến xe Chợ Lớn, dài 13km. Mãi đến năm 1885 chuyến xe lửa đầu tiên mới được khởi hành và một năm sau, tuyến đường Sài Gòn-Mỹ Tho dài 71km bắt đầu hoạt động. Sau đó, mạng lưới đường sắt được xây dựng trên khắp lãnh thổ Việt Nam, dùng kỹ thuật của Pháp với khổ đường ray 1 mét. Tính đến năm 1975 miền Nam có khoảng 1.240km đường ray nhưng vì chiến cuộc nên chỉ được sử dụng khoảng 60%.
Nhà ga cũng có xuất xứ từ tiếng Pháp gare. Ga là công tŕnh kiến trúc làm nơi cho tàu hoả, tàu điện hay máy bay đỗ để hành khách lên xuống hoặc để xếp dỡ hàng hoá. Từ sự vay mượn này ta có thêm những từ ngữ như sân ga, trưởng ga, ga chính, ga xép…

Xe lửa ngày xưa[/CENTER]
Nhân nói về ga tưởng cũng nên nhắc lại động từ bẻ ghi (aiguiller) tức là điều khiển ghi (aiguille) cho xe lửa chuyển sang đường khác. Trong tiếng Việt, bẻ ghi còn có nghĩa bóng là thay đổi đề tài, chuyển từ chuyện mình không thích sang một đề tài khác.
