Nhưng không phải la qua ngòi bút Thạch Lam, trong "hà Nội 36 phố phường" ông nhà văn naỳ "dông dài" qua mấy cái hàng quán là chính, ác nỗi bên naỳ mình phải ăn uống "diet" mà đọc phải thì ...hại nhau quá!

Cùng với Hàng Đào, Hàng Ngang là con phố tạo nên trục chính của phố cổ Hà Nội. Con phố vắt ngang không gian, thời gian và vắt ngang cả hai bờ văn hóa
Từ cái tên Hàng Ngang
Trong số các phố cổ Hà Nội th́ Hàng Ngang không phải là tên gọi phố theo đặc trưng sản phẩm kinh doanh như các con phố khác: Hàng Đào, Hàng Bạc, Hàng Đường, Hàng Bạc, Hàng Muối, Hàng Thiếc, Hàng Cót…Hiện không có cứ liệu lịch sử ghi lại chính xác tên Hàng Ngang có tự bao giờ. Chỉ biết cái tên ấy không gắn với sản phẩm đặc trưng mà gắn với kiến trúc mang tính lịch sử.

Phố Hàng Ngang xưa thuộc phường Diên Hưng, tổng Tiền Túc, huyện Thọ Xương thành Thăng Long. Đến thế kỷ XIX phố có tên là Việt Đông - phố tập trung những người Hoa Kiều Quảng Đông. Khu phố buôn bán sầm uất, giàu có, hai đầu phố người dân cho làm hai cánh cổng ngăn rất chắc chắc để buổi tối đóng lại, khép kín con phố ở hai đầu. Với lối kiến trúc này, phố trở thành phố ngang và cái tên Hàng Ngang được h́nh thành.
Vắt ngang hai bờ văn hóa
Phố Hàng Ngang từ lâu được coi là cầu nối hai bờ văn hóa Việt-Trung. Từ thời Lê, người Hoa được tổ chức sống tập trung tại một số nơi ở Hà Nội: Việt Đông (Hàng Ngang) và Hà Khẩu (Hàng Buồm), trong đó Hàng Ngang là nơi tập trung nhiều nhất. Theo luật định cư thời đó, hết thời hạn định cư cho phép, những người Trung Quốc này phải về nước, nếu t́nh nguyện ở lại phải thay đổi y phục, đổi phong tục theo người Việt Nam gọi là người Minh Hương. Trước năm 1945, người Pháp từng đặt tên cho phố Hàng Ngang là “Rue de cantonnais” - phố của những người Quảng Đông.

Tập quán thờ cúng cả Quan Công và vị tường thần Trần Hưng Đạo là nét đặc trưng trong tín ngưỡng của cư dân Hàng Ngang
Chính v́ lẽ trên, tại Hàng Ngang có sự ḥa trộn văn hóa Việt Trung trong mỗi nếp sinh hoạt. Người Việt và người Minh Hương (người Hoa kiều) sống xen lẫn và có mỗi quan hệ họ hàng gắn bó mật thiết với nhau, văn hóa sống do đó cũng có những sự giao thoa. Chẳng hạn người Minh Hương ở đây đă đem việc cúng lễ của Trung Quốc kết hợp vào với việc cúng lễ của người Việt Nam trong mỗi gia đ́nh. Điển h́nh của lối tư duy pha trộn này là việc họ lập hội dựng đền Tam Thánh thờ Quan Công ở Ngọc Sơn cùng với Trần Hưng Đạo.
Hàng Ngang nổi tiếng với những hiệu chè Tàu: Sinh Thái, Chính Thái, Ninh Thái, Song Hỷ. Vào phố này, người ta c̣n thấy những cửa hiệu cao đơn hoàn tán, họ làm đại lư cho các hăng thuốc Đông Y sản xuất ở Hương Cảng, Thượng Hải, Tân Gia Ba, Chợ Lớn. Nhưng Hàng Ngang cũng nổi tiếng với những hiệu kinh doanh đậm chất người Việt như vải vơ, tơ lụa, đồ trang sức...
Vắt ngang không gian
Ca dao Hà Nội xưa c̣n ghi:
Nhất vui là cảnh bờ hồ
Hàng Đào, Hàng Bạc, Hàng Bồ, Hàng Ngang...
Lại có câu:
Ba mươi sáu mặt phố phường
Hàng Giấy, Hàng Bạc, Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào.
Cứ hễ nhắc tới phố cổ Hà Nội là không thể bỏ qua Hàng Ngang. Con phố này đă góp phần quan trọng tạo nên trục không gian cho kiến trúc phố cổ. Phố Hàng Ngang dài khoảng 150m, nối liền phố Hàng Đào với phố Hàng Đường – hai mảng không gian quan trọng của trục phố cổ Hà Nội. Các du khách nước ngoài đến thăm Hà Nội thường thích ngồi xích lô khởi hành từ bờ hồ, qua phố Đinh Tiên Hoàng, qua Hàng Đào, Hàng Ngang rồi mới rẽ sang các phố cổ khác.
Hàng Ngang c̣n là nơi nối những không gian hẹp với những không gian rộng của phố cổ. Mặt đường hàng Ngang về mặt kiến trúc có vai tṛ như một xương sống. Nối vào xương sống đó có những ngôi nhà rộng bậc nhất Hà Thành, lại có những ngôi nhà, mặt ngơ hẹp, sâu nổi tiếng phố cổ. Chẳng hạn, số 55 Hàng Ngang là một lối đi hẹp đến mức nếu không chú ư kỹ người ta dễ lầm tưởng đó chỉ là khoảng không làm ranh giới giữa hai căn nhà. Cũng ít ai biết rằng phía trong số nhà 55 đó có hàng chục hộ dân cư sinh sống. Điện trong ngơ sâu này phải bật 24/24 mà vẫn có những góc tối om.

Số 53 và 55 điển h́nh cho những nhà, ngơ có không gian hẹp ở Hàng Ngang
Về mặt xây dựng, phố Hàng Ngang thay đổi nhiều so với trước đây, bộ mặt phố phường Hà Nội cũng đă có nhiều thay đổi, nhưng vai tṛ trục chính nối kết các cụm không gian kiến trúc phố Hàng của Hàng Ngang th́ vẫn nguyên vẹn.
