Sự chết là một điều chắc chắn tuyệt đối sẽ xảy ra với tất cả mọi sinh vật.
Đây cũng là nỗi sợ hăi lớn nhất của loài người từ khi bộ óc của họ phát triển đủ để có thể suy nghĩ. Nhất là khi tất cả mọi nỗ lực của con người để đối phó với nỗi sợ hăi nầy cho đến nay hầu như đều vô hiệu quả.
Mọi sinh vật, kể cả con người, đều có khuynh hướng gắn bó với sự sống thay v́ sự chết. Đó là một kết quả tự nhiên và hiển nhiên trực tiếp từ quá tŕnh tiến hóa của chủng loại. Đây là một điều ích lợi cho sự sống c̣n, nhưng nó cũng thường làm giới hạn sự hiểu biết của chúng ta về sự chết. Chúng ta thường bàn luận, nghiên cứu, t́m hiểu về những vấn đề liên quan đến sự sống và có khuynh hướng tránh né phải đương đầu trực tiếp với sự chết.
Người ta thường không thảo luận về sự chết một cách thoải mái. Người ta thường không thể trực diện với hiện tượng nầy. Người ta dùng những mỹ từ, những phong tục, những quy luật xă hội để cố phân cách sự chết ra khỏi cuộc sống hàng ngày của họ. Người ta cũng dùng trí tưởng tượng của họ dưới h́nh dạng tín ngưỡng, tôn giáo để tự an ủi, khỏa lấp hay che dấu thực trạng của sự chết và những ǵ xảy ra sau khi chết.
Ở đây, tôi có ư định đem đến một cái nh́n khách quan hơn về sự chết. Những dữ kiện tŕnh bày ở đây dựa trên tài liệu tham khảo của nhiều tác giả khác nhau. Một trong những tài liệu nầy là tác phẩm “The Romeo Error”, ấn bản năm 1976, của một sinh vật học gia tên Lyall Watson.
Những dữ kiện tŕnh bày ở đây dựa trên kiến thức khoa học, có nghĩa là những kinh nghiệm đă được kiểm chứng giữa lư thuyết và thực tế. Tuy nhiên, những dữ kiện nầy được tŕnh bày dưới tư cách một cuộc thảo luận chớ không phải như là những kiến thức chân lư tuyệt đối. Đó là v́ kiến thức khoa học luôn luôn có những giới hạn của nó. Đây là một tính chất cơ bản đặc thù và cũng là một lợi thế thúc đẩy dẫn đến sự tiến triển không ngừng của nhân loại. Nếu có sai lầm hay thiếu sót ǵ về phương diện lư luận hay về sinh học, vật lư học trong các lập luận ở đây th́ xin độc giả hăy dùng chúng như là chất xúc tác để góp phần thêm vào cuộc thảo luận nầy.
Cũng như lời mở đầu của Watson trong The Romeo Error, tôi gọi mời quư độc giả hăy “gỡ bỏ cách nh́n bị che chắn bởi kinh nghiệm hạn hẹp và thay vào đó bằng một đôi mắt t́m ṭi rộng mở”.

Sơ lược về những đề tài (dự định) sẽ tŕnh bày ở đây:
Phần I chú trọng đến phần thân xác vật chất của con người, và mọi sinh vật khác. Trong đó nói về:
- Những ngộ nhận giữa “sống” và “chết”.
- Sự mơ hồ của biên giới giữa “sống” và “chết”.
- Sự chết luôn luôn hiện diện song song và cần thiết cho sự sống.
- Phản ứng của con người về sự chết.
Phần II chú trọng đến phần mà chúng ta thường gọi là “tâm thức” (tức là từ “mind” trong Anh Ngữ). Trong đó nói về:
- Sự phân cách giữa tâm thức và thân xác.
- Sự liên quan giữa cá tính với tướng mạo.
- Những hiện tượng “siêu nhiên” như xuất hồn, v.v.
Phần III chú trọng đến phần mà chúng ta thường gọi là “linh hồn” (“soul”). Trong đó nói về:
- Sự sống c̣n bên ngoài thân xác vật chất.
- Hiện tượng “quỷ ám”.
- Những hiện tượng “phép lạ”.
Hầu hết những dữ kiện tŕnh bày trong Phần I, như độc giả sẽ thấy, dựa trên kiến thức khoa học đă được đă được kiểm nghiệm và công nhận rộng răi. Do đó hầu như không có ǵ cần tranh căi về chúng cả.
Có một vài đề tài khác, nhất là trong Phần II và Phần III nghiêng về các hiện tượng mà nhiều người gọi là “siêu nhiên”. Những dữ kiện tŕnh bày ở đây không phải là những câu giải đáp quả quyết về các hiện tượng nầy. Chúng cũng không hẳn là những câu hỏi. Chủ ư của chúng chỉ là để xây dựng một môi trường dựa trên nền tảng khoa học để dẫn đến những câu hỏi chính đáng về các hiện tượng trên.
Trong lănh vực siêu nhiên, rất nhiều người có khuynh hướng sẵn sàng đón nhận bất cứ cách giải thích nào đưa đến họ, nhất là những giải thích nào càng huyền bí th́ càng dễ được yêu chuộng. Một số (rất ít hơn) những người khác, trong đó có tôi, lại cảm thấy cần thiết để cố gắng t́m hiểu và t́m kiếm một phương cách nào đó để giải thích, hay ít ra là “ḥa giải”, giữa kiến thức khoa học và những hiện tượng siêu nhiên.
Đối với tôi, hiện tượng siêu nhiên chỉ là những hiện tượng chưa được kiểm chứng và giải thích rơ ràng được bởi khoa học. Một ngày nào đó khi sự hiểu biết và kỹ thuật con người tiến triễn đủ th́ nhiều hiện tượng được coi là siêu nhiên ngày nay sẽ trở thành kiến thức phổ thông. (Cách đây không lâu những người bị các chứng bệnh như tâm thần phân liệt, trầm căm, v.v. đă từng bị xem là bị ma hành, quỷ ám.)
Chúng ta cũng cần hiểu rằng một người không thể nào quan sát một hiện tượng mà không làm thay đổi nó phần nào trong khi làm việc đó. Đó là v́ khi quan sát, chúng ta nhận xét, phân tích, diễn tả và kết luận. Quá tŕnh trên là một quá tŕnh hoàn toàn chủ quan. Thực chất của một hiện tượng và những ǵ chúng ta cho rằng chúng ta “hiểu” về hiện tượng đó là hai sự kiện có thể rất khác nhau. V́ kiến thức của con người, và của mỗi người, có giới hạn nên sự chính xác trong hiểu biết về những hiện tượng xảy ra chung quanh chúng ta đều có những giới hạn mà chúng ta thường không nhận biết được.
Trong vật lư điện tử, nếu không đo lường được một vật thể th́ vấn đề nó có thật sự hiện hữu hay không có thể chỉ là vô nghĩa. Những ǵ tŕnh bày ở đây chỉ là một cuộc hành tŕnh đi dọc theo vùng ranh giới giữa những hiểu biết đă được và chưa được chính thức công nhận bởi khoa học.

Chết hay Chưa Chết?[/B]
Năm 1973, một người tên là Samuel Moore ở Oakland, California bị bắn vào đầu và chết. Trái tim của ông, vẫn c̣n đập mạnh, được lấy ra và dùng ngay sau đó trong một cuộc giải phẩu thay tim cho một bệnh nhân tim ở một thành phố khác.
Thủ phạm bắn ông bị bắt và ra ṭa xử một vài tháng sau đó về tội sát nhân. Tuy nhiên, luật sư của người nầy phản đối cho rằng thân chủ của ông chỉ có tội “hành hung với vơ khí nguy hiểm” chớ không có tội “sát nhân”. Theo luật sư nầy th́ thân chủ ông không hề làm cho nạn nhân chết, v́ nếu đă chết th́ tại sao trái tim của ông ta vẫn c̣n đập và vẫn c̣n đang đập (mặc dầu trong lồng ngực của một người khác).
Lư luận nầy đă gây bối rối không ít trong quá tŕnh truy tố. Tuy nhiên, may mắn thay (cho công tố viện) là bệnh nhân được thay tim đă ngả ra chết không lâu sau đó nên lư luận bào chữa trên trở thành không c̣n chính đáng nữa.
Thí dụ ở trên cho thấy định nghĩa “chết” trong phương diện y khoa, và pháp lư, có nhiều khi không rơ ràng và rất thiếu sót.
Trong câu chuyện t́nh nổi tiếng Romeo và Juliet của Shakespeare, Juliet v́ không muốn bị gă cưới cho người nàng không yêu nên uống thuốc giả chết; Romeo v́ không biết mưu kế nầy nên khi đến nh́n thấy Juliet nằm đó (với các triệu chứng của một tử thi) tưởng lầm là nàng đă chết thật nên tự vận chết theo. Sự lầm lẫn nầy thật ra rất thường xuyên, và xảy ra cho cả những chuyên viên y khoa nhiều kinh nghiệm.
Năm 1374, thi sĩ Ư Francesco Petrarch đă được xác nhận chết 24 tiếng đồng hồ. Theo luật lệ địa phương, người ta phải chờ thêm 4 tiếng nữa mới có thể mai táng. Trong thời gian nầy, một sự thay đổi thời tiết và nhiệt độ bất thường xảy ra làm ông bừng tỉnh ngồi dậy và than phiền người làm đă mở cửa để gió lạnh quá Ông tiếp tục sống thêm hơn 30 năm nữa để sáng tác nhiều thi phẩm tuyệt tác để lại cho nền văn chương Ư.
Năm 1896, giám mục Chính Thống Giáo Hy Lạp Nicephorus Glycas đă được xác nhận chết nhưng hai ngày sau ngay trong tang lễ của ông ở giữa nhà thờ Chính Ṭa đă làm mọi người kinh hoảng khi ông ngồi bật dậy than phiền tại sao các tín đồ lại xúm nhau trố mắt nh́n ông một cách vô lễ như vậy.
Năm 1964 trong buổi khám nghiệm tử thi ở nhà xác New York, khi một “tử thi” bị cứa dao mỗ vào bụng đă ngồi bật dậy và chụp cổ người bác sĩ đang giải phẩu. Bác sĩ nầy v́ hoảng sợ bất ngờ nên đă đứng tim chết tại chỗ. “Tử thi” trên bàn mỗ trong khi đó đă dần dần hoàn phục và sống thêm nhiều năm nữa.
Và rất nhiều câu chuyện tương tự xảy ra khắp nơi cho ngay đến ngày hôm nay.

chết hay chưa chết... khoa học hay tâm linh ??
Sáng Chủ Nhật đọc được mục này th́ cũng nên chú ư đến, nhất là cho người cao tuổi.
Định nghĩa Chết là hết thở.. trái tim ngưng đập.. và nhiệt độ toàn thân xuống dưới 24 độ C sau 48 giờ trong thể không động đậy.( total immobilisation )
C̣n định nghĩa của tôn giáo, đạo Phật th́.. chết tức là thần thức tách ra khỏi nhục thể sau hai ngày.
Với khoa học, tuy rằng cơ thể không c̣n động đậy, nhưng tim vẫn đập.. phổi vẫn thở th́ chỉ có phần giao cảm ( mental ) là yên/ngủ chứ chưa chết, vẫn có thể tỉnh lại,để điều khiển nhục thể.
C̣n nhục thể vẫn phải nuôi bằng thức ăn lỏng qua ống.. và tiêu hoá vẫn hoạt động, máu vẫn chạy, tim vẫn bơm.. phổi vẫn phập phồng trao đổi oxy với máu.. cứ nh́n tóc.. móng tay, móng chân vẫn mọc dài.. phải cắt..thể xác vẫn sống; đời sống thực vật .(chỉ có bộ năo là không có điện)
Theo Thiên Chúa giáo th́ cái linh hồn ấy bay về nước Chúa.. mà nước của Chúa lại là niềm TIN.. không có trong thực tế. và sự huyền bí giữa Hoả ngục, Thiên đàng và luyện ngục...là nơi chốn linh hồn sẽ đi qua .
C̣n theo Phật giáo, linh thức/vong hồn thoát ra khỏi nhục thể.. th́ bay đi đâu ?? theo Tiểu thừa th́ có Địa ngục và Niết bàn.. cũng chỉ là huyền bí.. v́ chưa có ai quay trở lại để mà nói rằng.. ở dưới ấy ... nóng lắm.. hay bọn quỷ nó dữ dằn ghê gớm..!
Bên đạo Phật c̣n có Đại thừa và một ngành nghiêng về Triết; Duy Thức, v́ trong Duy thức có giảng về NGHIỆP .. và có ba loại như ; quá khứ, hiện tại và vị lai.. nhưng lại có Mạt na thức.. một h́nh thức trừng phạt, tẩy rửa tội lỗi.. sau khi tẩy rửa, thanh lọc.. nếu không sạch được th́ phải quay lại thế gian để trả cho xong cái nợ luân hồi quả báo mà đạo gọi là QUÁ nghiệp.. (quá nghiệp- hiện nghiệp- tương lai ).
Sau khi thanh khoản ṣng phẳng th́ cái linh thức ấy được đi đâu ?? chuyển qua Bát thức và thẳng đường đi tới Niết bàn.. vậy Niết bàn có hay không ?? chưa ai biết rằng không hay có !! chỉ có trong lời dạy của Phật là Niết bàn tại TÂM.. mà một khi làm tốt, làm thiện th́ con người đâu có áy náy, bận tâm.. hay bị ăn năn cắn rứt.. th́ cái TÂM đâu có c̣n nữa mà trở thành vô TÂM.. mà vô Tâm rồi th́ đâu c̣n NGĂ.. mà đă vô NGĂ th́ vô PHÁP.. đâu có cần đến luật lệ để răn đe, để phạt những kẻ làm sai trái.nên tội..
Sự siêu thoát vô h́nh này, đưa linh thức đến đâu ?? hay là tan loăng cùng vũ trụ vĩnh hằng..(universe )
c̣n theo khoa học.. trong óc có tuần hoàn.. có gịng điện nhỏ nhoi.. và cái computer thiên nhiên này điều khiển toàn bộ từ suy nghĩ đến hành động.(neuro-administration ??). từ cảm tính đến hưởng thụ hay chịu đựng.. và sau khi v́ sự kiện ǵ đó mà gịng điện bị tạm ngưng (CB blow-popped).. cái này c̣n có thể có lại( reset) được.. chứ ngắt ( cut-off ) .. th́ hết điện thật sự.. mà hết điện th́ điện đi đâu ?? hay lại tan biến trong không gian.( space.)
Cái nhục thể sau khi trút hơi thở, ngay đơ.. chờ phân huỷ được đem đi thiêu hay chôn. Thiêu th́ bốc khói thành tro bụi.. cũng lại trở về với thế gian hiện hữu (world) là không khí.. là nước, đất.. c̣n như chôn.. sau thời gian phân huỷ.. thấm xuống ḷng đất.. cũng trở thành fertiliser.. nuôi sống vạn vật có mặt trên trái đất này..
Vậy khi chúng ta đến thế gian này chúng ta đă mang đến cái ǵ.. hay là hai bàn tay không ??... c̣n ...

[B]Nhiều Phương Cách Chẩn Định Khác Nhau [/B]
Những câu chuyện trên xảy ra là v́ từ xưa đến nay sự chết được xác định bằng nhiều cách khác nhau.
Một điều cần biết là trừ trường hợp chiến tranh th́ phần lớn người ta chết thường v́ già yếu hay bệnh hoạn. Cách đây vài trăm năm ở Âu Châu, người ta chỉ dùng các dấu hiệu bên ngoài để xác định một người c̣n đang sống hay đă chết. Khi trong gia đ́nh có người bệnh được xem là vừa chết th́ một tu sĩ được mời đến để kiểm chứng. Người tu sĩ nầy dùng một tấm gương nhỏ để kề vào mũi của bệnh nhân và nếu tấm gương không bị hơi thở làm mờ đi th́ người nầy sẽ được xác nhận và tuyên bố là đă thật sự chết. Đến thế kỷ thứ 18 th́ người ta tiến bộ hơn và dùng nhịp tim để xác định một người c̣n sống hay đă chết.
Dần dần người ta nhận ra rằng khi dùng chỉ những dấu hiệu bên ngoài như hơi thở và nhịp tim th́ có nhiều trường hợp ngay cả các y sĩ chuyên môn cũng bị lầm lẫn. Như đă nói, có nhiều trường hợp mà bệnh nhân tuy đă được xác nhận là đă chết nhưng vẫn “hồi sinh” sau đó.
Trong những thế kỷ 18-19 ở Âu Châu, đặc biệt là Anh Quốc có một hiện tượng ăn cắp xác chết từ những ngôi mộ vừa mới chôn. Đó là v́ trong những năm nầy ngành y khoa đang phát triển mạnh mẽ về mặt giải phẩu cơ thể con người. V́ không có đủ tử thi để mổ xẻ khám nghiệm với mục đích t́m ṭi học hỏi nên một số bệnh viện, đại học y khoa đă ngầm mua tử thi cung cấp cho họ qua các nguồn bất hợp pháp. Điều nầy dẫn đến việc nhiều ngôi mộ vừa mới chôn bị lén đào lên để lấy tử thi đem bán. Năm 1824, một người tên John Macintyre sau khi được xác nhận chết và chôn trong nghĩa địa của giáo đường địa phương đă bừng tỉnh dậy mấy hôm sau trên bàn mổ của một trường y khoa ở Luân Đôn khi bác sĩ bắt đầu cứa dao vào “tử thi” của ông. Vụ nầy dẫn đến một cuộc điều tra lớn. Nhiều nghĩa trang trong ngoài thành phố trong thời kỳ nầy có lính canh gác ngày đêm và nhiều ngôi mộ mới chôn được gia đ́nh bao phủ bởi các khung sắt kiên cố để tránh bị đào trộm.
Những trường hợp “hồi sinh” trên xảy ra thường xuyên đủ để người ta đă phải cố t́m các giải pháp đặc biệt để đối phó.
Có những nhà xác bố trí một pḥng “chờ đợi” nơi người ta để các tử thi mới nhập vào nằm tạm một thời gian trước khi được xem là đă chết thật sự. Trong nhà xác thành phố Munich ở thế kỷ trước, các tử thi được sắp nằm kế nhau trên một băng dài với một sợi dây nhỏ cột vào người dẫn đến một cái chuông gắn trong pḥng trực. Tài liệu ghi rằng đă có không ít lần cái chuông nầy đă được rung lên báo động cho người trực biết rằng có một “tử thi” nào đó đă sống lại.
Năm 1856, người ta nghe tiếng động từ dưới ngôi mộ của một người đàn ông vừa mới chôn. Tuy nhiên v́ phải chờ đợi sự cho phép của linh mục và cảnh sát quá lâu nên khi đào lên được th́ người nầy đă chết v́ ngộp thở. Khi nh́n các dấu vết cào cấu trong quan tài người ta mới thấy rằng người nầy đă sống lại và cố vùng vẫy trong tuyệt vọng một thời gian trước khi chết thật sự v́ thiếu không khí.
Năm 1893, một người đàn bà có thai khá lớn được chẩn định là đă chết và được mai táng. Có người nghe tiếng động phát ra từ ngôi mộ mới chôn của bà nên người ta quyết định khai quật lên để xem việc ǵ xảy ra. Người ta thấy rằng bà nầy cũng đă tỉnh dậy trong quan tài của ḿnh và trong khi cố sức giăy giụa t́m cách thoát thân đă sinh ra đứa con từ trong bụng. Y sĩ khám nghiệm cho thấy đứa con nầy đă sống được một thời gian ngắn trước khi cả mẹ lẫn con đều chết ngộp trong quan tài.
Năm 1897, Bá Tước Nga Karnice Karnicki đă chế ra một loại quan tài “an toàn”. Quan tài nầy, sau khi được mai táng, có gắn một ống nhỏ dẫn lên và nối vào một cái hộp nằm trên mặt đất. Hộp nầy không thể mở được từ bên ngoài nhưng người nằm trong quan tài tuy đang bị chôn dưới đất vẫn có thể giật một sợi dây để mở nắp hộp ra. Khi nắp hộp nầy mở ra, không khí có thể lùa vào trong quan tài để họ thở được. Đồng thời sẽ có một cây cờ bật lên trên nắp hộp cùng với đèn chớp tắt và chuông báo động cho người bên ngoài biết rằng người nằm dưới mồ vẫn c̣n sống.
Có nhiều phương pháp khác, ngoài khám hơi thở và nhịp tim, đă được dùng để xác nhận một người đă chết hay chưa, nhất là trong các trường hợp khó chẩn định. Bác sĩ Icard ở Marseilles dùng một dung dịch flourescine để chích vào tṛng mắt; nếu người bệnh c̣n sống th́ tṛng mắt họ sẽ chuyển qua một màu xanh tạm thời, nếu họ đă chết th́ không có ǵ xảy ra. Ở Mỹ, người ta dùng atropine cũng để chích vào mắt; chất nầy làm đồng tử của một người c̣n sống lập tức mở rộng ra và không có tác dụng ǵ với người đă chết. Ở Anh, từ năm 1970 người ta bắt đầu dùng các dụng cụ đo được những tín hiệu điện nhỏ nhất trong cơ thịt tim để chẩn định một người đă chết hay chưa.

[B]Không có Một Cách Chẩn Định nào Hoàn Hảo cả[/B]
Vấn đề là tất cả những phương pháp chẩn định, mặc dù rất hiệu quả đi nữa, đều có một yếu điểm chung. Đó là v́ khi không nhận thấy một dấu hiệu sống nào cả trong một thân thể vẫn không có nghĩa là hoàn toàn không c̣n có sự sống.
Chẩn định sự chết dựa vào hơi thở là một phương pháp được ghi chép trong sách dạy y khoa ở vài thế kỷ trước. Định nghĩa sự chết theo cách nầy có nhiều lỗ hổng lớn. Có những thiền sư Zen và hành giả Yoga có thể hạ mức độ tiêu thụ ô-xy của họ xuống thấp khoảng 20% lượng ô-xy cần dùng thông thường. V́ nhiều bộ phận trong cơ thể có tự dự trữ đôi ít ô-xy bên trong chúng nên có thể vẫn hoạt động hay phục hồi sau khi sự hô hấp đă ngừng lại khá lâu. Trong lịch sử y khoa có rất nhiều trường hợp bệnh nhân được chẩn định đă chết theo tiêu chuẩn nầy vẫn sống lại được và có khi b́nh phục hoàn toàn.
Cách chẩn định sự chết dựa vào nhịp tim đập cũng có nhiều lỗ hổng. Tương tự, nhiều hành giả yoga có thể luyện tập để giảm nhịp tim đập của họ xuống chậm hẳn lại. Ở bệnh viện New Delhi đă ghi nhận trường hợp một người có thể tự làm cho tim của họ ngưng lại 12 phút. Trong nhiều cuộc giải phẩu tim ngày nay, trái tim của người bệnh có thể được bác sĩ làm cho ngừng đập hoàn toàn cả giờ đồng hồ trước khi cho phép nó đập lại khi cuộc giải phẩu hoàn tất.
Có trường phái y học đă dạy rằng nhiệt độ cơ thể thấp bất thường là một dấu hiệu chắc chắn người đó đă chết. Vấn đề thứ nhất là chúng ta không thể định nghĩa nhiệt độ cơ thể bao nhiêu là “b́nh thường” nên do đó không thể khẳng định được bao nhiêu là “bất thường”. Nhiệt độ “trung b́nh” thường được cho là 37 độ Celcius nhưng nhiệt độ cơ thể một người thường thấp hơn khi họ vừa thức dậy và cao hơn khi họ đi ngủ. Trẻ sơ sinh có nhiệt độ trung b́nh cao hơn và người già có nhiệt độ thấp hơn thanh niên trong khi phụ nữ thường nóng hơn khoảng một độ Celcius trong thời gian rụng trứng. Vấn đề khác nữa là khi một người chết đột ngột, thí dụ như v́ bị sét đánh hay nội thương, th́ nhiệt độ trong cơ thể của họ sẽ không thay đổi lắm cho đến vài tiếng đồng hồ sau. Trong khi đó, một người lúc bị lên suyển nặng tuy vẫn c̣n sống nhưng nhiệt độ cơ thể họ có thể sụt hẳn xuống không khác nhiệt độ một xác chết. Nhiệt độ trong những người vừa chết do bệnh kiết lỵ, bệnh phong đ̣n gánh, bệnh sởi sẽ gia tăng đột ngột. Khi một tử thi bắt đầu śnh thối th́ các phản ứng hóa học trong nội tạng của họ phát xuất ra nhiều nhiệt lượng và có thể làm cho nhiệt độ toàn thân họ tăng lên trở lại giống như nhiệt độ của một người c̣n sống.
Phương pháp dùng đèn rọi vào tṛng mắt để chẩn định sự chết cũng không có ǵ chắc chắn cả. Đó là v́ cơ thịt của đồng tử trong mắt, cũng như nhiều cơ thịt khác trong cơ thể, vẫn c̣n có thể co thắt khi phản ứng với những kích động từ bên ngoài vài giờ đồng hồ sau khi một người đă được xem là chết rồi.
Khi một người đă chết th́ máu trong người họ v́ không c̣n được sức đập của trái t́m làm cho lưu thông nữa nên sẽ dần dần đông đặc lại sau vài giờ đồng hồ. Sự kiện nầy dẫn đến phương pháp chẩn định dùng kim đâm vào dưới da để thử xem máu c̣n chảy hay không. Tuy vậy, phương pháp nầy cũng không chính xác. Khi một người c̣n sống, máu trong người họ không đông đặc được là nhờ một hóa chất bài tiết ra từ những tế bào đặc biệt nằm dọc theo vách bên trong các gân máu. Khi một người đă chết, các tế bào nầy vẫn có thể tiếp tục bài tiết hóa chất trên qua một thời gian khá lâu. Do đó ngay cả sau khi máu trong một tử thi đă đông đặc nhưng đến vài ngày sau nó vẫn có thể chảy lỏng trở lại.

Vào cuối thế kỷ mười chín ở Anh Quốc có khoảng hơn 600 ngàn người mỗi năm đă được xem là chết mà không hề được khảo nghiệm ǵ cả. Với kiến thức khoa học ngày nay, khi nh́n lại lịch sử y khoa người ta phỏng định rằng có khoảng gần 3 ngàn người trong số nầy (mỗi năm) trong thời kỳ đó đă bị mai táng khi họ vẫn c̣n sống.
Trong những thời kỳ chiến tranh hay bệnh dịch hoành hành, khi hàng ngàn người chết đồng loạt cần phải được giải quyết càng nhanh chóng càng tốt th́ con số người bị chôn sống dưới dạng nầy chắc chắn không nhỏ. Trong quá khứ khi kiến thức y khoa c̣n non kém th́ sự lầm lẫn trong việc xác định người chết là một điều thường xuyên không thể tránh được.
Ngày nay, ngay cả tại các nước tân tiến nhất nơi có đầy đủ phương tiện y tế, việc nầy vẫn xảy ra. Năm 1963 chẳng hạn, Elsie Waring 35 tuổi ngả quỵ tại nhà và được xác định đă chết bởi 3 bác sĩ nhiều kinh nghiệm ở bệnh viện Willesden General Hospital của Luân Đôn đă sống lại 10 tiếng đồng hồ sau đó trong khi người ta đang khiêng bà bỏ vào quan tài. Và chỉ gần google “coming back from death” chẳng hạn th́ sẽ thấy rất nhiều trường hợp tương tự. Thí dụ như trong website [url]http://www.oddee.com/item_98718.aspx[/url] có nói về 10 người [COLOR="#000000"]trong ṿng vài tháng gần đây[/COLOR] đă sống lại sau khi đă được tuyên bố chết. Dĩ nhiên là không phải bất cứ điều ǵ đăng trên internet đều đáng được tin cậy ngang nhau, nhưng trong vấn đề nầy thường chỉ cần dùng một chút phân tích và suy luận th́ chúng ta có thể gạn bỏ ra những câu chuyện không đáng để ư đến.
Nếu muốn hiểu rơ hơn một chút tại sao những ngộ nhận trầm trọng nầy vẫn có thể xảy ra ngày nay với các bác sĩ chuyên khoa, các chuyên viên mai táng đă được huấn luyện chặt chẽ, v.v. chúng ta có thể cần phải nh́n vào định nghĩa của sự chết là ǵ bằng con mắt khách quan của một nhà sinh vật học.

[COLOR="#800000"][B]Định Nghĩa Y Khoa của “Chết”[/B]
Một số nhà sinh vật học định nghĩa sự chết là “sự vắng mặt của sự sống”. Đây là một định nghĩa tuy chính xác nhất nhưng đồng thời không có giá trị thực dụng lắm. Thật ra có thể nói là với sự hiểu biết của khoa học hiện đại, biên giới giữa sự sống và chết đă trở thành mơ hồ đến độ rất khó phân biệt được.
Với kỹ thuật y học ngày nay, người ta có những dụng cụ có thể đo được các dấu hiệu sống nhỏ nhất trong cơ thể con người. Kỹ thuật y khoa ngày nay cũng có thể “cải tử hoàn sinh” trong nhiều trường hợp. Từ đầu thập niên 1960 đă có những dụng cụ có thể giữ cho trái tim của một bệnh nhân tiếp tục đập trường kỳ mặc dù các cơ quan trọng yếu khác trong cơ thể họ đă ngưng hoạt động hẵn. Nhiều chuyên gia y khoa cho rằng nếu một bệnh nhân sẽ không bao giờ tỉnh táo lại cả v́ bộ năo của họ đă hoàn toàn chết và chỉ c̣n hơi thở hoặc trái tim đang đập qua sự hỗ trợ của máy móc th́ không thể nào cho rằng họ vẫn c̣n sống. V́ lư do nầy, năm 1968 trường Y Khoa Havard đưa ra một định nghĩa “chết” mới, đó là khi năo bộ đă bị hư hũy không cứu chữa được, họ gọi đây là trường hợp “năo chết” (“brain dead”).Định nghĩa nầy đă trở thành tiêu chuẩn y khoa, và pháp lư, thông dụng ngày nay để chẩn định và tuyên bố một người đă chết hay chưa.
Dùng định nghĩa “năo chết” để xác định sự chết của một người nhiều khi gặp không ít khó khăn. Thân nhân của người bệnh thường khó chấp nhận được rằng người nầy đă chết khi mà rơ ràng thân thể họ vẫn c̣n ấm và lồng ngực họ vẫn c̣n thoi thóp thở mặc dù là với sự hỗ trợ của máy móc. Và dùng định nghĩa “năo chết” để chẩn định sự chết của một người cũng không phải là một phương cách hoàn hảo, nó chỉ có thể đẩy cái biên giới giữa sống và chết theo sự hiểu biết của y khoa xa đi thêm một đoạn nữa mà thôi.
Trong việc xác định việc chết sống, vấn đề thường được tranh căi là “bộ phận nào, chức năng nào, thành phần nào trong cơ thể của một người cần phải chết rồi trước khi người đó được công nhận chính thứclà đă chết?” Hay nói một cách khác, “một người được công nhận là c̣n sống khi bộ phận nào, chức năng nào, thành phần nào trong cơ thể của họ vẫn c̣n sự sống?”
Kỹ thuật y khoa ngày nay xác nhận rằng ngay cả khi một người được chẩn định là đă chết(nghĩa là khi tất cả dấu hiệu sống bên ngoài của họ như là khả năng nhận biết, phản xạ của cơ bắp, hơi thở, nhịp tim đập, v.v. đă chấm dứt), toàn bộ cơ thể của họ thường chưa hẵn đă chết tất cả. Có những cơ quan trong nội tạng của họ vẫn c̣n làm việc, có những quá tŕnh trao đổi năng lượng qua sự bài tiết, tiêu hóa, v.v. vẫn c̣n đang tiếp diễn. Có vô số tế bào trong cơ thể họ vẫn c̣n hoạt động v́ chúng vẫn c̣n nguyên liệu dự trữ và v́ sự vận hành hàng ngày của chúng hầu như độc lập với những cơ quan khác trong thân thể. Do đó trên lư thuyết, trước khi bộ năo bị hư hại hoàn toàn không cứu văn được th́ một người bệnh nầy vẫn có thể được cấp cứu làm cho sống lại.
Bộ năo là một bộ phận trong cơ thể sử dụng nhiều ô-xy nhất nhưng lại dự trữ ít ô-xy nhất. Bộ năo thường có thể chịu đựng được khoảng 5 hay 6 phút không có ô-xy mà vẫn có thể hồi phục lại. Sau thời gian nầy th́ bộ năo sẽ bắt đầu chết dần đi từng phần cho đến khi toàn bộ ngưng hoạt động hẵn. Trong khi đó các bộ phận khác như tim, phổi thường có thể được làm “hồi sinh” lại một thời gian khá lâu ngay cả sau khi năo bộ đă chết.Khoảng 72 giờ sau khi một người được chẩn định đă chết, tóc và móng tay chân họ vẫn tiếp tục mọc, lá gan họ vẫn tiếp tục chế tạo ra chất glucose và nhiều tế bào trong cơ thể họ vẫn có thể được lấy và cấy sống thành công trong pḥng thí nghiệm.
