[B]Buổi ra mắt tác phẩm nghiên cứu lịch sử về chiến tranh Việt Nam của giáo sư Andew Wiest tại thành phố Falls Church có thể được xem là cơ hội để những người bạn cũ, những đồng đội cũ, của 40 năm trước gặp lại nhau. Họ có thể là những mảnh vụn, bị phân tán khắp nơi sau khi chia tay, để rồi, với tác phẩm nghiên cứu của Wiest, họ lại được sắp vào nhau như một khoa học ghép h́nh, góp phần tái lập lại h́nh ảnh đúng đắn hơn cho một quân đội, theo lời giáo sư Wiest, gần như chưa bao giờ được thế giới Tây Phương thừa nhận và đối xử công bằng[/B].

Thành phố Falls Church, ngày 17 tháng Hai, năm 2008. Tại buổi lễ ra mắt tác phẩm nghiên cứu lịch sử của giáo sư Andrew Wiest. Tác phẩm có tên “Vietnam’s forgotten Army. Heroism and betrayal.”
“Hăy cho tôi giải thích tại sao tôi viết cuốn sách này. Tôi chỉ mới 14 tuổi khi Sài G̣n thất thủ, c̣n quá trẻ cho cuộc chiến Việt Nam! Nhưng tôi đă nh́n thấy cuộc chiến ấy mỗi ngày, trên tivi, trong ánh mắt những thanh niên Hoa Kỳ đàn anh trở về từ chiến trường Việt Nam, trên khuôn mặt những người Việt Nam được các nhà thờ trong địa phương bảo trợ sang Hoa Kỳ sau cuộc chiến. Nhưng tôi cũng nhận ra một điều: không một ai có thể giải thích cuộc chiến ấy! Đối với tôi, đó là một bí ẩn. Và chắc hẳn, đó cũng là bí ẩn trung tâm của thế hệ chúng tôi. Và tôi quyết định đi t́m câu trả lời.” (Tiến sĩ Andrew Wiest)
Andrew Wiest, giáo sư sử học, Giám Đốc Trung Tâm Nghiên Cứu Chiến Tranh và Xă Hội tại đại học Southern Mississippi tŕnh bày nguyên ủy ra đời của tác phẩm “[COLOR="#FF0000"]Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Ḥa, Một Quân Đội Bị Quên Lăng. Anh Hùng và Kẻ Bội Phản[/COLOR].”
Đối với Andrew Wiest, chiến tranh Việt Nam là một lớp học không có giáo sư, một cuốn sách không có tác giả, một điều cấm kỵ mà dường như hầu hết người Mỹ muốn quên đi.
Wiest không chọn thái độ đó, và ông quyết định một phương pháp giảng dạy mới. Đó là, mời các cựu chiến binh đến giảng bài, và sau đó, chính ông đưa họ cùng các sinh viên sang Việt Nam, để t́m hiểu chiến trường của hơn 30 năm trước, và cũng để đi t́m diện mạo của một quân đội mà ông gọi là “bị bỏ quên.”
“Trong thời gian ở Việt Nam, tôi gặp một người đàn ông có tên là [COLOR="#FF0000"]Phạm Văn Đính[/COLOR], đă tham gia chiến tranh Việt Nam. Qua câu chuyện ông ta kể, tôi thấy ông ta là một bí ẩn. Tôi tin rằng, tôi sẽ cần phải nói chuyện với ông ta nhiều hơn nữa để học hỏi.
Sau khi trở lại Hoa Kỳ, tôi hỏi rất nhiều người về Phạm Văn Đính. Tất cả đều nói, nếu tôi muốn biết nhiều hơn về Đính, có một người có thể kể cho tôi. Người đó tên là [COLOR="#FF0000"]Trần Ngọc Huế,[/COLOR] đă kết thúc cuộc đời binh nghiệp theo một con đường hoàn toàn khác Phạm Văn Đính.”
Và cuốn sách ra đời. Tác phẩm của Wiest là một công tŕnh thuần túy lịch sử, nhưng cấu trúc được xây dựng lạ lùng, và chủ đề được tiếp cận nhân bản.
