Georgetown Fights In China: Brawl Breaks Out Between Hoyas And Chinese Team During "Goodwill" Tour
[AP, 18-8-2011] BEIJING - A bench-clearing brawl at an exhibition game between American and Chinese basketball teams Thursday marred the orchestrated harmony of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to China.
The fight between the Georgetown University men's basketball team and the Bayi Rockets on Thursday night in Beijing forced the game to end early. Biden did not attend the game. However, on Wednesday he watched the Georgetown team beat the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons 98-81.
Georgetown Hoyas head coach John Thompson III said in an emailed statement that the team regretted the incident.
"Tonight, two great teams played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams," he said. "We sincerely regret that this situation occurred."
The brawl Thursday was the latest instance of on-court fighting by China, whose players have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the world and Asian federations for scrapping with opponents.
Photos from the game circulating on China's popular microblog Sina Weibo show players from both teams pushing one another.
The Washington Post said the melee broke out in the fourth quarter as members of both teams tackled and threw punches at one another. Chairs and water bottles were also thrown as the Georgetown players left the court with about nine-and-a-half minutes remaining.
The Georgetown Hoyas are in China on a 10-day goodwill trip which has been cited by the U.S. State Department as an example of sports diplomacy that strengthens ties between the two countries' peoples. The team was briefed by the State Department ahead of its departure on what to expect during its trip to Beijing and Shanghai, according to news releases on the university's website.
"We remain grateful for the opportunity our student-athletes are having to engage in a sport they love here in China, while strengthening their understanding of a nation we respect and admire at Georgetown University," Thompson III said.
A U.S. Embassy official called it an "unfortunate" incident.
"We look to these types of exchanges to promote good sportsmanship and strengthen our people-to-people contact with China," the official said.
Earlier in the day, some friction also arose as reporters covering Biden's visit encountered some restrictions. During Biden's meeting with Chinese officials, White House press handlers believed they had an agreement that reporters would be permitted to remain in the room until Biden had completed his opening remarks.
However, Chinese security officers began telling reporters to leave while Biden was speaking, leading to whispered objections and some reporters being led from the room.

The Washington Post's Gene Wang first tweeted about the incident: Chairs were being thrown. Players and coaches had to dodge water bottles hurled from stands.Wang, who attended the game, later wrote that after Hu Ke fouled Georgetown's Jason Clark the two got into a shoving match and both benches emptied. Chinese police were on hand but did not try to break up the fights.
This from a Georgetown message board:
Two minutes into the fourth, they were pressing full court, trapped one of our guards (I forget who it was), and then must have pushed or punched him on the ground after he made the outlet pass, because then there was a shoving match and then a bit of a fight, and then the whole thing set off. He tried to get away as quickly as possible as the Chinese players sort of converged on him, and then benches cleared, and then people on the Chinese bench started picking up chairs. Everyone on the other side of the court started fighting as well. Brawl spread all over the court, and then off the court. After it kicked off it immediately became possible for the crowd to get involved, and then they did. As we tried to get the team off the court, bottles (plastic ones, thankfully) came out of the crowd at the team and everyone left. Security was there (sort of), but it was more equivalent to mall cop-quality security rather than actual security. The Georgetown staff wanted the security to get on the floor, but honestly these guys didn't have a clue what to do. They escorted the whole alumni contingent out fairly quickly after that. Game over, 64-64 (following another intentional foul).

As for the guy in khaki shorts stomping on Hoyas guard Jason Clark (#21), pictured at top, I have no idea who he is. Also, in case you somehow missed how outrageous this brawl is, it’s at least doubly so because the Bayi Rockets are a professional Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) team—one fielded by the People’s Liberation Army.

This is nobody's interpretation of goodwill!
A bench-clearing brawl at an exhibition game between American and Chinese basketball teams has marred U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's relationship-building visit to China.
The incredible fight between the Georgetown University men's basketball team and the Bayi Rockets forced the game on Thursday night in Beijing to end early.
Players exchanged blows, chairs were thrown and spectators tossed full water bottles as players and coaches headed to the locker room. Georgetown are in the country on a goodwill tour.
On Wednesday, Mr Biden watched the Georgetown Hoyas play another Chinese team. Mr Biden did not attend Thursday's game.
Georgetown head coach John Thompson III said in a statement: 'Tonight two great team played a very competitive game that unfortunately ended after heated exchanges with both teams.
'We sincerely regret that this situation occurred.'
Mr Thompson pulled his players off the court with nine minutes 32 seconds left in the game and the scored tied at 64, the Washington Post reported, after a chaotic scene in which members of both teams began throwing punches and tackling one another.
Immediately before the fighting began, Bayi forward-centre Hu Ke was called for a foul against Georgetown’s Jason Clark, the Washington Post reported.
The senior guard took exception to the hard foul and said as much to Hu, triggering an exchange of shoves between the two.
That sparked the bedlam which ensued as players from both benches ran onto the court.
Georgetown senior centre Henry Sims had a chair tossed at him by an unidentified person, and freshman forward Moses Ayegba, walked onto the court with a chair in his right hand.
According to Georgetown officials, Ayegba had been struck, prompting him to grab a chair in self-defence.
Before anyone was seriously hurt, Thompson said, 'We’re outta here,' the Washington Post reported, and pointed toward the tunnel.
Fearful of reprisals from Chinese fans, members of the Georgetown staff were trying to find a police escort for the entire contingent, including alumni and supporters who attended the game as part of a 10-day tour of China.
But rather than wait, Mr Thompson told everyone to walk to the buses together.
Love you so o much! Kungpao chicken
