A PICTURE of a boat is making waves in school art circles.
St Anthony’s Primary School pupil Huy, 8, painted the little boat during a multicultural-themed art class.
The print has gone on to win the Australian Catholic University Award for Social Justice at a visual arts exhibition run by the Catholic Education Office, Archdiocese of Melbourne.
“The Boat People” was chosen ahead of 28 other paintings in the primary school division.
To enter the exhibition, art teacher Anisah Furness had to write a submission about the boat and what it meant to Huy.
He said it was his father’s boat, she said.
Huy’s father, Bang Vu, was called in to fill in the gaps.
Mr Vu fled Vietnam in February 1983, aged 18, in a rickety boat with no food and water.
After seven days he made it to Thailand where he spent three years in a refuge camp.
In August 1983, his two brothers and a sister died on the high seas en route to Thailand trying to follow him to freedom.
“I just thought it was a beautiful picture of a boat,” Ms Furness said.
“When we found out the story behind it, it added so much more.”
Ms Furness said the simplicity made it stand out.
“It’s simple, very few lines to make a big expression and a big statement.”
