Ladies and Gentlemen,

My name is Vu Long Tran | and I'd like to thank you for allowing me the honour to speak with you all today. We gather here, to reflect on a remarkable individual whose legacy is intertwined with our lives and the lives of many of our community-Malcolm Fraser, > the 22nd Prime Minister of Australia. His deep commitment to humanity and justice left an indelible mark on Australian society, particularly in the lives of Vietnamese refugees and many others from the indochina region.

As many of you remember, the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 led to a human rights crisis. Thousands of Vietnamese people sought refuge beyond their homeland's borders. The harrowing images, videos and experience of our people risking their lives in search for freedom | are etched in history and in your memories. It was a time of immense uncertainty and peril.

Amidst this crisis, Malcolm Fraser emerged as a beacon of hope and compassion. His leadership and policies during this period | were not just political decisions; they were acts of profound humanity. Fraser recognised the urgent need to provide refuge and support to those fleeing oppression.

His government initiated a series of measures that paved the way for Vietnamese refugees to find a new home | in Australia.

Fraser's approach was revolutionary for its time. He believed in a multicultural Australia, one that embraced diversity and offered a fresh start to those seeking liberty and democracy. Under his leadership, Australia accepted tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees, a move that required not only political courage but also a deep empathy for human suffering.

Fraser's policies provided the foundation for the resettlement programs that helped Vietnamese refugees integrate into Australian society.

Many of you here today might recall the initial uncertainty and fear upon arriving in a foreign land. However, you also experienced | the welcoming arms of a Country.

willing to offer you a chance to rebuild your lives. This generosity was in no small part due to Malcolm Fraser's vision. He understood that Australia's strength lay in its diversity and that the contributions of new migrants would enrich the nation.

Fraser's impact extends beyond policy. He fostered a culture of acceptance and support that resonated through the generations. His legacy is visible in the vibrant Vietnamese communities that have flourished across Australia.

Your success stories, your businesses, your contributions to the arts, sciences, and civic life, all stand as testaments to Fraser's foresight and compassion as well as your own resilience, strength and passion.
